It\u2019s part of a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help people with Type 2 diabetes lower their blood sugar and reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Ozempic can play an important role in improving the health of people with Type 2 diabetes, it\u2019s not without side effects. Because it slows digestion, some of the most commonly reported side effects of Ozempic are gastrointestinal, like nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. However, some people report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novomedlink.com\/diabetes\/products\/treatments\/ozempic\/efficacy-safety\/safety-profile.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including headaches, back pain, and acid reflux.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-headaches\/\"><b>Does Ozempic cause headaches?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people have reported muscle pain while taking Ozempic. However, the drug\u2019s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, does not report it as a side effect. Here\u2019s why you might be experiencing muscle pain while taking Ozempic and what you should do about it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-ozempic-works-in-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Ozempic works in the body<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By mimicking GLP-1, a hormone that affects glucose in the body, Ozempic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novomedlink.com\/diabetes\/products\/treatments\/ozempic\/about\/mechanism-of-action.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helps lower blood sugar in three ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By telling the pancreas to make more insulin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By stopping the liver from releasing too much glucose into the bloodstream<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By delaying gastric emptying (i.e., slowing down the rate at which food moves through the digestive system)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic doesn\u2019t directly impact your muscles or your musculoskeletal system. However, losing large amounts of weight quickly\u2014as can sometimes happen on Ozempic\u2014may cause sarcopenia, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uclahealth.org\/news\/article\/rapid-weight-loss-can-lead-loss-muscle-mass\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the loss of muscle mass and strength<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWeight loss, in general, can cause the breakdown of muscle, which is why it is very important to exercise regularly and maintain a balanced diet with nutritious foods that have adequate amounts of protein,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aeroflowdiabetes.com\/akhil-shenoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Akhil Shenoy, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, endocrinologist and medical adviser at Aeroflow Diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ozempic-cause-muscle-and-joint-pain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Ozempic cause muscle and joint pain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Shenoy, there have been reports of ligament sprains with Ozempic, but they aren\u2019t common: The frequency is less than 5%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The more likely cause of muscle and joint pain on Ozempic is a combination of dehydration and dietary changes, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/optionsmedicalweightloss.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katrina Mattingly, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, obesity medicine specialist and chief medical officer of physician-supervised weight loss center Options Medical Weight Loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Ozempic decreases your appetite, you\u2019ll eat less while taking it. But Dr. Mattingly says that can also cause you to take in fewer fluids and protein, as well as electrolytes like sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which are important to muscle health. When you\u2019re dehydrated and deficient in key nutrients, you might experience muscle cramping or aches and pains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another possible reason for muscle pain while taking Ozempic is related to why you may be taking the drug in the first place: Type 2 diabetes. Although well-controlled diabetes shouldn\u2019t cause muscle pain, per Dr. Mattingly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dehydration-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some medications prescribed for diabetes-related symptoms can cause muscle pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like statins and blood pressure medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects of Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and stomach pain. These can often be mitigated by eating small, bland meals, increasing hydration, and avoiding high-fat and high-sugar foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in some cases, people experience more serious side effects when taking Ozempic, such as allergic reactions, kidney problems, small bowel obstruction, pancreatitis, and gallstones or gallbladder inflammation. If you experience any severe side effects while taking Ozempic, contact your healthcare provider right away or seek emergency medical care.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-manage-muscle-pain-and-other-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to manage muscle pain and other Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the recommendations for managing the gastrointestinal side effects of Ozempic is to increase hydration, and that\u2019s also true for managing muscle pain. Dr. Mattingly recommends drinking plenty of fluids and increasing your lean protein and electrolyte intake.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cElectrolyte water or a low-sugar electrolyte drink may help, as well as a daily multivitamin,\u201d Dr. Mattingly says. \u201cFor anyone experiencing nausea or an upset stomach, sipping protein shakes or bone broth can help replace some of the vitamin, mineral, and protein deficiencies and hydrate your body.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mattingly also recommends doing some light massage and stretching exercises to alleviate muscle soreness or\u2014if you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore\u2014taking an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or alternating heat and ice packs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If these at-home treatments don\u2019t relieve your muscle pain, get evaluated by your healthcare provider. Your muscle pain may not be related to Ozempic. A thorough history and exam, and possibly x-rays, may diagnose a different condition with a different treatment plan. Possibly, you may just need to adjust your Ozempic dose since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novomedlink.com\/diabetes\/products\/treatments\/ozempic\/efficacy-safety\/safety-profile.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher doses are associated with a higher risk of side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But since muscle pain isn\u2019t a commonly reported side effect of Ozempic, it\u2019s a good idea to reach out to your provider if you\u2019re consistently having this symptom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf your muscle pain persists, a dose adjustment or discontinuation [of the drug may be] warranted,\u201d says Dr. Shenoy, adding that other explanations for your muscle pain should be explored if you\u2019re still experiencing it several weeks after stopping Ozempic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic alternatives\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternatives to Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that don\u2019t include muscle pain as a side effect,\u201d Dr. Mattingly says, so if you think Ozempic is causing your muscle pain, talk to your healthcare provider about other options. Similar alternative medications include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/jardiance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as other GLP-1 injectable drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro?q=Mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trulicity\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHowever, it\u2019s also worth noting that poorly managed diabetes can cause nerve damage over time, possibly resulting in muscle aches, numbness, and tingling,\u201d Dr. Shenoy says. While Ozempic should help you maintain the blood sugar levels needed to manage your diabetes, muscle discomfort could be a sign that the medication isn\u2019t providing the intended effect.
