Shutze, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vascular surgeon with Texas Vascular Associates, PA in Plano, Texas and the Society of Vascular Surgery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking medication for a reason that isn\u2019t FDA approved is considered an \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d use. While healthcare providers can prescribe Ozempic for off-label uses like weight loss, there are pros and cons to consider when taking it if you don\u2019t have Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are several steps to FDA approval,\u201d Dr. Shutze continues, \u201cincluding preclinical testing, multiple trials that evaluate the drug\u2019s safety and side effects when used for a particular indication, and a final evaluation based on the manufacturer\u2019s application of what the drug is intended to treat.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen the drug is approved for use by the FDA it\u2019s authorized only for the indication(s) that are in the application. However, many drugs are found to be useful in other situations and may be prescribed by physicians for these off-label indications,\u201d Dr. Shutze says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is what happened with Ozempic, according to Dr. Shutze. It was developed and approved to treat diabetes, but also routinely led to weight loss in the trial subjects who took it, causing some providers to prescribe Ozempic off-label in people who don\u2019t have diabetes to aid in weight loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-you-shouldn-t-take-ozempic-for-weight-loss-alone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why you shouldn\u2019t take Ozempic for weight loss alone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although using Ozempic off-label is a decision you and your healthcare provider will need to make together, there are reasons why some choose not to prescribe drugs off-label.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, using a drug off-label\u2014especially one that\u2019s fairly new, like Ozempic\u2014can be unsafe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsing Ozempic off-label may pose risks, as its safety and efficacy for weight loss have not been thoroughly studied,\u201d Dr. Shutze says. \u201cPotential side effects and long-term impacts might not be well understood for non-diabetic patients.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason why you may not want to take Ozempic only for weight loss is the drug\u2019s overall availability. Ozempic has experienced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nabp.pharmacy\/news\/blog\/diabetes-drug-shortages-and-fake-ozempic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a number of shortages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2022, according to the\u00a0 National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, in part because of an increase in off-label prescribing. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-shortage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic shortages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affect the availability for patients who need it to manage Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does off-label prescribing make it difficult for people with diabetes to continue using Ozempic without interruption, but it may also deter providers from starting new diabetic patients on Ozempic out of concern that access to the drug will be inconsistent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"who-shouldn-t-take-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who shouldn\u2019t take Ozempic<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you have Type 2 diabetes\u2014or have a healthcare provider willing to prescribe Ozempic for off-label use\u2014you may not be eligible to take it. Dr. Shutze says people with a history of certain cancers, including medullary thyroid carcinoma and multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome Type 2 (MEN 2), should not take Ozempic. Both work like Ozempic to delay gastric emptying and suppress the appetite center of the brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"difference-between-ozempic-and-wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difference between Ozempic and Wegovy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy has the same active ingredient as Ozempic: semaglutide. But, unlike Ozempic, it is FDA approved for chronic weight management in adults and children ages 12 and older who have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. It is also approved to treat adults with a BMI of 27 or more with at least one health condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, related to their weight. In March of 2024, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/wegovy-heart-disease-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an additional indication was approved by the FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: to lower the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with known heart disease and obesity or overweight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Ozempic and Wegovy are both semaglutide drugs, you may wonder why they aren\u2019t FDA approved to treat the same conditions. \u201cIt\u2019s a great question that many people ask,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehcginstitute.com\/doctors\/danielle-kelvas-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Kelvas, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a primary care physician with The HCG Institute in Tennessee, and CEO and Founder of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dkmdconsulting.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DKMD Consulting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Kelvas notes that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difference between Ozempic and Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> largely comes down to the intricacies of the FDA approval process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen a drug is in the pipeline of a clinical trial, the FDA requires the pharmaceutical company to be very specific in their hypothesis and tested patient population,\u201d she explains. \u201cOzempic was only tested on patients with Type 2 diabetes. Therefore, it is only FDA approved for that use and at very particular doses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut Wegovy was tested on a broader patient population (including people diagnosed with obesity),\u201d Dr. Kelvas says. And though both drugs contain the same active ingredient, the dosage and dose forms are slightly different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-max-dose\/\">What is the maximum dose of Ozempic?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is a single-dose, prefilled injection pen (versus Ozempic\u2019s multi-dose pen) that\u2019s typically prescribed at higher maintenance doses than Ozempic. Wegovy is also approved for use in adults and children ages 12 and older, while Ozempic is only for adults ages 18 and older. In terms of cost, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-much-does-wegovy-cost\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy is a little bit more expensive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a list price of $1,825 for a month\u2019s supply compared to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-without-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic\u2019s list price of $1,382<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, most people don&#8217;t pay the list price if their health insurance covers weight-management medications.
