Paxlovid can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/13-things-to-know-paxlovid-covid-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decrease the metabolism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of anticoagulants, increasing their levels to a point where they are unsafe to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Iroanya says that because of the risks, combining Paxlovid with Eliquis should be avoided entirely and that other methods should be considered if possible. \u201cConsider alternative treatments that do not interact with anticoagulants Eliquis,\u201d she adds. \u201cIn some cases, dose adjustments or temporary discontinuation may be feasible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Paxlovid may increase the effects of Eliquis, Dr. Sylejmani says that some people may need to take this combination of drugs. \u201cFor high-risk COVID patients, Paxlovid&#8217;s benefits often outweigh the risks,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from Eliquis, there are other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.covid19-druginteractions.org\/checker\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid drug-drug interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be aware of. Studies show that using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/paxlovid-for-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid can reduce the risk of hospitalization <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or death by 89% in patients at high risk for severe illness from COVID-19. If the dose of the concomitant medication cannot be adjusted, the drug should be withheld, or an alternative concomitant medicine or COVID-19 therapy should be used. If needed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-alternatives\/#comparison\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include Pradaxa (dabigatran), Xarelto (rivaroxaban), Savaysa (edoxaban), Ciumadin or Jantoven (warfarin), and Heparin. Other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/COVID-19\/Treatments\/Pages\/Possible-Treatment-Options-for-COVID19.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 therapies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your healthcare provider or pharmacist may recommend as a replacement for Paxlovid include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/veklury\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veklury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (remdesivir) or Lagevrio (molnupiravir).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, if you have certain medical conditions, it may be unsafe to take the COVID-19 drug Paxlovid. \u201c People with severe liver (hepatic) impairment (Child-Pugh Class C) should avoid mixing these medications due to the risk of liver toxicity,\u201d Dr. Iroanya says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA also recommends that Paxlovid should be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/155051\/download\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoided or closely monitored<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have kidney problems (a different dose may be necessary)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have HIV (Paxlovid may cause some HIV medicines to be less effective)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant (it is unknown if Paxlovid can harm an unborn child)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are you breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is unknown if Paxlovid can pass through breast milk)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have to take Eliquis and Paxlovid simultaneously, make sure you take the necessary precautions to lower your chances of adverse events. \u201cPatients should follow up frequently with their healthcare provider, report side effects immediately, and know that dosage adjustments may be needed,\u201d Dr. Sylejmani says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-should-i-wait-to-take-paxlovid-after-taking-eliquis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long should I wait to take Paxlovid after taking Eliquis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In most cases, Paxlovid can be taken with Eliquis. According to Dr. Iroanya, you should wait at least 24 hours after stopping Eliquis before starting Paxlovid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safest or preferred dosing schedule for each medication varies depending on the recommended dosage, any medical conditions you may have, your age, and your body weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Iroanya says the standard dose for Paxlovid is 300 milligrams (mg) of nirmatrelvir with 100 mg of ritonavir administered by taking three tablets together twice daily (in the morning and before bedtime) for five days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have moderate-level renal or kidney impairment, dose reduction may be necessary to prevent or reduce complications while taking Paxlovid. Dr. Iroanya suggests the 150 mg dose pack, in which you would take one 150 mg nirmatrelvir tablet with one 100 mg ritonavir tablet twice daily for five days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She adds that Paxlovid is not recommended for people with severe renal impairment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regarding Eliquis, the standard oral dosage ranges depending on the condition that is being treated.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/apixaban-oral-route\/proper-use\/drg-20060729\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis dosages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for different cardiovascular (heart) conditions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Deep venous thrombosis (hip replacement surgery):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2.5 mg two times a day for 35 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Deep venous thrombosis (knee replacement surgery): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 mg two times a day for 12 days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prevention of recurrent deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.5 mg two times a day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prevention of strokes and blood clots in people with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 mg two times a day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism treatment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 mg two times a day<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Iroanya notes that other factors can affect <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis dosages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIn patients with at least two of the following characteristics: age greater than or equal to 80 years, body weight less than or equal to 60 kilograms (kg), or a serum creatinine of greater than or equal to 1.5 milligrams per deciliter (mg\/dL), the recommended dose is 2.5 mg orally twice daily,\u201d she explains.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider will prescribe the proper dosages for the co-administration of Eliquis and Paxlovid for your health needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-it-safe-to-mix-eliquis-and-paxlovid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to mix Eliquis and Paxlovid?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/eliquis-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/paxlovid-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxlovid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can pose many health risks due to their drug-drug interactions.
