Can you take Paxlovid with Eliquis?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sazan Sylejmani, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a>, the owner and pharmacy manager of <\/span>Westmont Pharmacy<\/span><\/a>, says it is okay to take Paxlovid and Eliquis, but close monitoring is recommended. <\/span><\/p>\n

Jessica Iroanya, Pharm.D., BCMTMS<\/span><\/a>, an RPh adviser at CVS Health, says there are exceptions where taking Paxlovid and Eliquis isn\u2019t recommended.\u201cWhen Paxlovid is combined with Eliquis, increased anticoagulation effects can occur, which could lead to excessive bleeding in patients on these medications,\u201d she says. <\/span><\/p>\n

Anticoagulants<\/span><\/a> or blood thinners like Eliquis stop blood from <\/span>clotting or thickening<\/span><\/a>. Paxlovid can <\/span>decrease the metabolism<\/span><\/a> of anticoagulants, increasing their levels to a point where they are unsafe to use.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Iroanya says that because of the risks, combining Paxlovid with Eliquis should be avoided entirely and that other methods should be considered if possible. \u201cConsider alternative treatments that do not interact with anticoagulants Eliquis,\u201d she adds. \u201cIn some cases, dose adjustments or temporary discontinuation may be feasible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Paxlovid may increase the effects of Eliquis, Dr. Sylejmani says that some people may need to take this combination of drugs. \u201cFor high-risk COVID patients, Paxlovid’s benefits often outweigh the risks,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n
