The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved it as a prescription medication for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and pediatric patients older than six years. It&rsquo;s also approved for binge-eating disorder (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/binge-eating-disorder-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BED<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in adult patients but is typically used as a second-line therapy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vyvanse belongs to a class of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cns-stimulants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">central nervous system (CNS) stimulant drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called amphetamines. Amphetamines help regulate certain chemicals in the brain (dopamine and norepinephrine) to increase cognitive control and improve focus, alertness, and attention for medical conditions such as ADHD. They&rsquo;re not commonly prescribed due to safety concerns around food and drug interactions. Taking Vyvanse within 14 days of taking an MAOI is contraindicated. Concurrent use of MAOI slows the breakdown of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dextroamphetamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, increasing the likelihood of serious side effects such as headaches, a sudden increase in blood pressure (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-pressure-levels\/#high-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a hypertensive crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and heart rate, stroke, and heart attacks, and even sudden death in patients who have preexisting heart problems or heart defects. Patients experiencing symptoms of a hypertensive crisis should seek immediate medical attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs that healthcare providers can currently prescribe in the United States include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marplan (isocarboxazid)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nardil (phenelzine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emsam (selegiline)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parnate (tranylcypromine)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"serotonergic-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonergic drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonergic drugs increase serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and other body parts. Serotonin syndrome symptoms may be mild, such as having diarrhea or nausea, or be more severe, such as experiencing high fever or seizures.
