{"id":629592,"date":"2024-08-29T13:08:11","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T17:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=629592"},"modified":"2026-06-04T18:08:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T22:08:00","slug":"dupixent-face-rash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dupixent-face-rash\/","title":{"rendered":"Dupixent face rash and redness: Causes and treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationaleczema.org\/research\/eczema-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 10 Americans have some type of eczema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means 10% of the country deals with dry, itchy, inflamed, scaly skin or lesions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/dupixent\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dupixent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dupilumab) is a biologic monoclonal antibody medication that can help treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD), as well as asthma, chronic rhinosinusitis, and nasal polyps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it can relieve some of this skin disease\u2019s most irritating symptoms, dupilumab treatment may also cause side effects, specifically a facial rash and facial erythema (redness). Not everyone experiences these reactions, but it\u2019s important to understand how and why a Dupixent face rash and other symptoms occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-dupixent-works-in-the-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Dupixent works in the body<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s still <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health-topics\/atopic-dermatitis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unclear what causes atopic dermatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common form of adult and pediatric eczema, but it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaci-inpractice.org\/article\/S2213-2198(23)00183-6\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commonly regarded as an immune system and skin barrier condition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is when the layer of the skin that would typically keep out things like allergens and bacteria doesn\u2019t properly do its job. Those intruders trigger the immune system, which releases certain proteins that cause skin inflammation. It\u2019s essentially an immune response gone wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proteins released by the immune system are called interleukin-4 and interleukin-13, and they\u2019re Dupixent\u2019s targets. It blocks them from binding to their designated receptors, curbing the immune system\u2019s response and reducing or preventing atopic dermatitis symptoms. Systematic reviews and clinical trials have shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9464283\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dupixent is safe and effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for patients ages <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36116481\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 months and older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dupixent is a biologic drug, which means it\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/biologicals#tab=tab_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">created from living cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than synthetic chemicals. Biologics can target very specific cells or proteins within the immune system, giving them a more pointed attack on certain conditions. As such, Dupixent isn\u2019t a broad immunosuppressant like other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/eczema-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eczema drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it won\u2019t increase the risk of infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-dupixent-cause-a-face-rash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Dupixent cause a face rash?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial rashes and redness aren\u2019t listed as adverse effects in Dupixent\u2019s clinical trials, but they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2772829323000218\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-documented in case reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other research. In fact, researchers have estimated that anywhere between 4% and 44% of patients may experience facial dermatitis or neck erythema after taking dupilumab, the active ingredient in Dupixent, according to the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Michael O. McKinney, MD, primary physician at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthyoutlookjax.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy Outlook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Jacksonville, Florida, facial skin reactions may \u201coccur due to the paradoxical local skin inflammation caused by the suppression of interleukin-4 and interleukin-13 as it interferes with erythema.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The underlying cause of these side effects may vary by patient. \u201cDupilumab facial redness (DFR) has many different causes, including dupilumab hypersensitivity, inflammation from Malassezia yeast or Demodex mites, allergic contact dermatitis, and a reaction to the drug itself,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/amyhuangmd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Huang, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, board-certified dermatologist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalofficesofmanhattan.com\/our-team\/dr-amy-huang\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical Offices of Manhattan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and contributor to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.labfinder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LabFinder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malassezia is a particular strain of yeast that\u2019s common around the body\u2019s sebaceous glands, so it can accumulate near the head, neck, and scalp, and it\u2019s a common culprit in head and neck dermatitis. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/ski2.312\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One hypothesis says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that dupilumab might activate the immune system to cause Malassezia-induced inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a Dupixent-related face rash occurs, a healthcare provider can diagnose and treat it. This characterization may require patch testing, a skin biopsy, or other tests, but diagnosis often only requires a visual examination.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-dupixent-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Dupixent side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facial dermatitis is one of the most visible Dupixent side effects. However, other adverse events are less obvious. Some main <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dupixent-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of Dupixent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injection site reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pink-eye-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pink eye (conjunctivitis)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joint pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-blepharitis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen eyelids (blepharitis)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gastritis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastritis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toothache<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-rid-of-cold-sores\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold sores<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the mouth or lips<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, Dupixent may also cause serious side effects, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serum sickness (a kind of immune reaction)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling of the cornea (keratitis)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood vessel swelling (vasculitis)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dupixent-eye-side-effects\/\"><b>Dupixent eye side effects<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-manage-a-dupixent-face-rash-and-other-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to manage a Dupixent face rash and other side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going to work or social gatherings with a facial rash isn\u2019t ideal, so people who experience dupilumab-associated facial or neck dermatitis probably want to get rid of it fast. Fortunately, there are a few effective solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost times, topical corticosteroids or any other anti-inflammatory agents prescribed by a healthcare provider are used in dealing with facial redness,\u201d Dr. McKinney says. A retrospective study published by Tufts Medical Center&#8217;s Department of Dermatology in 2021 found that nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaad.org\/article\/S0190-9622(21)00627-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70% of patients with dupilumab facial redness improved after a course of itraconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A separate study from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dermatologic Therapy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> backed up those results, showing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/354756453_Dupilumab_facial_redness_Clinical_characteristics_and_proposed_treatment_in_a_cohort\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">positive patient responses to oral or topical antifungals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other azole antifungals might work, too, but they haven\u2019t shown as much promise as itraconazole.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical corticosteroids (TCSes) are another common treatment for erythematous and inflamed skin, and they might work for dermatitis from Dupixent, too, although <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9681168\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some case studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have demonstrated that steroids aren\u2019t effective for everyone. Topical calcineurin inhibitors (TCIs) are another option. Both TCSes and TCIs are popular eczema treatments in their own right, and patients can use them alongside dupilumab therapy. However, Sanofi and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2022\/761055s040lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the developers of Dupixent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recommend reserving TCIs for \u201cproblem areas\u201d\u2014specifically the face, neck, and intertriginous or genital areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Huang adds that oral antibiotics and topical vasoconstrictors may also work for certain cases, but that \u201cthe patient will need to be evaluated by a dermatologist.\u201d By examining your rash and determining its cause, a healthcare provider can help find the best option for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home remedies can also be helpful for managing the discomfort that comes with face and neck dermatitis. Aloe vera, tea tree oil, coconut oil, and apple cider vinegar all have distinct anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial properties. Keeping the area clean and avoiding allergens or other potential irritators (like sunburn or cigarette smoke) might prevent it from getting worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"dupixent-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dupixent alternatives\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk of a facial rash might be a dealbreaker for some people\u2014reason enough to say \u201cno, thanks\u201d to Dupixent. And that\u2019s totally fine because there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/dupixent-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several Dupixent alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including some that might not have the same side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-monoclonal-antibody-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other monoclonal antibody drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adbry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adbry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tralokinumab-ldrm) is a monoclonal drug that, like Dupixent, is injectable and targets specific immune system proteins. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.adbry.com\/about-adbry\/adbry-clinical-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have proven Adbry to be effective in treating many cases of eczema without as many documented cases of facial dermatitis. However, it may still cause a rash, rosacea, and swelling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"jak-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAK inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Huang recommends Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rinvoq\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rinvoq<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (upadacitinib) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cibinqo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cibinqo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (abrocitinib) as alternatives to Dupixent. This drug class works by blocking enzymes called Janus kinase, which can contribute to inflammation. Face rash or redness isn\u2019t one of the common side effects of JAK inhibitors, and it typically only occurs if the patient has an allergic reaction to the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"topical-calcineurin-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical calcineurin inhibitors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most other drugs on this list, TCIs like Elidel (pimecrolimus) and Protopic (tacrolimus) focus on inhibiting a specific protein, calcineurin, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eczema.org\/information-and-advice\/treatments-for-eczema\/topical-calcineurin-inhibitors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contributes to eczema inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Healthcare providers may also prescribe them off-label to treat psoriasis.
