It is also used to lower the risk of heart attack and heart disease. Atorvastatin belongs to a class of medications called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins, which are commonly prescribed together with a healthy diet and exercise to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atorvastatin is not one of the many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-that-cause-weight-gain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications known to cause weight gain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, some people do gain weight on statin medications such as atorvastatin. Exactly how and why may vary, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5789723\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has linked statin use with increased calorie intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-atorvastatin-cause-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can atorvastatin cause weight gain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Research suggests that statins do not directly cause significant weight gain or fat redistribution, such as belly fat,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmasue.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sue Ojageer, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacymentors.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pharmacy Mentors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/pharmacy-awards\/winner\/2022-best-pharmacist-influencer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare Best of the Best Pharmacy Awards winner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;That said, any medication can have side effects, and some patients may notice changes in their weight or body composition while on statins.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, weight gain is not a side effect of atorvastatin, but taking this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/statins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statin drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause other effects that impact your weight. Factors that may contribute to weight gain while taking a statin include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A false sense of security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appetite changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin resistance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"a-false-sense-of-security\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A false sense of security<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who take atorvastatin may develop a false sense of security as they start to experience lower <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cholesterol-levels-by-age-chart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cholesterol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Statin users might assume the treatment&rsquo;s effectiveness is a permission slip to indulge in more sugary or processed foods without worrying about their impact on their health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research backs this theory. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/1861769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10-year study of 31,170 Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people using statins significantly increased their fat and calorie intake over time. Eating more may contribute to weight gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"appetite-changes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appetite changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5789723\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has also linked statin use with decreased leptin, a hormone that helps control appetite. A dip in leptin could cause patients to feel unusually hungry after starting atorvastatin. Anyone taking statins for the first time should report unusual cravings or a lack of post-meal satisfaction to their healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"increased-insulin-resistance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased insulin resistance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/ATVBAHA.121.316159\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that atorvastatin use can lead to insulin resistance, a well-known precursor to Type 2 diabetes. Other lifestyle-related <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors for Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include being overweight and exercising fewer than three times per week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you&rsquo;re insulin resistant, your body can&rsquo;t efficiently convert the glucose in your bloodstream (blood sugar) into energy. On the other hand, atorvastatin is intended to be used in conjunction with a low-cholesterol diet and exercise. When paired with healthy lifestyle changes, this statin might even help people with obesity or who are overweight lose weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s important to remember that many factors can contribute to body weight changes. If you experience weight gain or trouble losing weight on atorvastatin, seek medical advice from a healthcare professional.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tips-for-managing-your-weight-on-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips for managing your weight on atorvastatin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;What you eat can play a vital role in managing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/cholesterol-levels-by-age-chart\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cholesterol levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and if you are on a statin, you should still incorporate foods that are fiber-filled and loaded with healthy fats for cardiovascular health,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/victoriashantaretelny.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vicki Shanta Retelny, RDN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, registered dietitian nutritionist and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total Body Diet For Dummies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In other words, the types of foods you eat can help you avoid weight gain while on statins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"fill-up-on-fiber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fill up on fiber<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fiber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fiber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can make you feel full faster than other nutrients&mdash;and satisfaction lasts longer, too, says Shanta Retelny. She suggests eating fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take it a step further by focusing mostly on soluble fiber. &ldquo;Soluble fiber is a type of fiber that can help lower cholesterol. Food sources of soluble fiber include oats, avocado, apples, and beans,&rdquo; explains <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacquelinegomesnutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacqueline Gomes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RD, a registered dietitian and nutritionist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"eat-more-protein\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat more protein<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Foods higher in fiber and protein not only take longer to digest, but you can stay full on fewer calories&mdash;the cornerstone to healthy weight management,&rdquo; says Gomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthy, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-protein-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-protein foods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include lean animal products, along with nuts and seeds. &ldquo;Some examples of quality protein sources include poultry, fish, tofu, eggs, Greek yogurt, and cottage cheese,&rdquo; she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"prioritize-unsaturated-fats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritize unsaturated fats<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fat is essential to a healthy diet&mdash;but the fat type matters, especially if you have a risk of cardiovascular disease. People on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/low-cholesterol-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low-cholesterol diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should reduce or eliminate saturated and trans fats while prioritizing unsaturated fats, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/fatty-acids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">omega-3 fatty acids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shanta Retelny says unsaturated fats are found in foods such as avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish such as salmon, halibut, and tuna. Her suggestion for satisfying eats while on atorvastatin? &ldquo;Spread avocado on a piece of whole grain toast, add nuts as a snack, or sprinkle seeds like chia, flax, or hemp seeds over a salad. Enjoy fatty fish at least two times a week!&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercising regularly is one of the best ways to avoid weight gain on atorvastatin or any other statin. Aerobic activity has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3906547\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve cholesterol levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Fitness is key, with at least 150 minutes a week or 30 minutes at least 5 days a week. Building muscle mass is vital to boost metabolism, plus changing the composition of the body can decrease metabolic syndrome, which includes high cholesterol,&rdquo; says Shanta Retelny. Consult a healthcare provider before beginning any new exercise program.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternatives-to-atorvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatives to atorvastatin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Statins are generally the first line of treatment due to their proven efficacy in lowering LDL cholesterol and reducing cardiovascular events,&rdquo; says Dr. Ojageer. &ldquo;However, as with any medications, side effects can occur, and some patients tolerate certain statins better than others.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides atorvastatin, some HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crestor (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rosuvastatin-calcium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rosuvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zocor (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/simvastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">simvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pravachol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pravastatin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pravastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mevacor (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lovastatin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lovastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lescol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluvastatin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluvastatin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like atorvastatin, none of these <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-cholesterol-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cholesterol medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are known to cause weight gain directly. However, they can still have side effects. Muscle aches and weakness are common side effects of statins. (Note: Intense muscle pain is a sign of rhabdomyolysis, a rare but serious side effect of statins where muscle tissues break down, which can cause kidney damage.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Lower doses or alternative statins like pravastatin or fluvastatin might be recommended [for some patients], as they are associated with fewer muscle-related side effects,&rdquo; says Dr. Ojageer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there are some examples of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/atorvastatin-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atorvastatin alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are not statins:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zetia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zetia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ezetimibe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ezetimibe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricor (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fenofibrate\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fenofibrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/praluent\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Praluent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (alirocumab)&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/repatha\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repatha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (evolocumab)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;These medications have different mechanisms of action and are generally well-tolerated, though they may be used in combination with statins for those who require more intensive cholesterol-lowering therapy,&rdquo; explains Dr. Ojageer. Like atorvastatin, these medications are not known to cause weight gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, there is no <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/which-cholesterol-drug-is-safest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one safest drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is right for everyone with unhealthy cholesterol levels. The medication that&rsquo;s best for you depends on your individual health history.
