In 2022, Vraylar was also approved by the FDA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2022\/204370s009lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as an adjunctive therapy for treating major depressive disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Vraylar can be helpful to many people, there are instances when it may need to be stopped. For example, someone may experience negative side effects from Vraylar, or they may have recently found out that they&rsquo;re pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are in a situation where you need to stop Vraylar, one question at the top of your mind is probably: How long does Vraylar stay in your system after stopping it? Typically, Vraylar stays in your system for about a week or two after the last dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, we&rsquo;ll go over everything you need to know about how long Vraylar stays in your system, what to expect in terms of how long side effects may linger, and the importance of weaning off of Vraylar under medical supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-medication-stay-in-your-system\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does medication stay in your system?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before we look at how long Vraylar stays in your system after stopping it, it can be helpful to understand how long medications stay in your system in general and what factors impact this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;The length of time a medication stays in your system is highly individualized and depends on your body&#8217;s ability to metabolize it,&rdquo; says Toni Abelseth, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.midwestpsychcare.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midwest Psychiatric Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Dickinson, North Dakota.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Abelseth, these factors can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Underlying medical conditions you may have<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your organ function<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your weight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your metabolism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type of medication you are taking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vraylar\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of medication you are taking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How you are taking the medication (whether by mouth, injection, inhalation, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way of understanding how long medications stay in your body is to consider a medication&rsquo;s half-life. &ldquo;Half-life refers to the time it takes for half the dose of a drug to be eliminated from the body,&rdquo; says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/sazan-sylejmani-a6ba1080\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sazan Sylejmani, Pharm.D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &ldquo;On average, medications stay in your system for about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK554498\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four or five half-lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&rdquo; Dr. Sylejmani notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-vraylar-stay-in-your-system-after-stopping-it\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does Vraylar stay in your system after stopping it?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several reasons why a person might want to stop taking antipsychotic drugs like Vraylar. &ldquo;In my clinical experience, most prescription drugs are stopped either due to lacking effect, side effects, or cost,&rdquo; Abelseth says. &ldquo;I have seen all three concerns be a barrier for continuing Vraylar.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people want to stop Vraylar because of its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/medguide.cfm?setid=4b5f7c65-aa2d-452a-b3db-bc85c06ff12f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse side effects and potential risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For instance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vraylarhcp.com\/pharmacokinetics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vraylar&rsquo;s boxed warnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say that the drug can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts in some children and young adults. Additionally, it should not be used in certain populations, such as older adults with dementia-related psychosis or pregnant people. Many breastfeeding parents may be concerned about the medication getting into their breast milk as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial barriers may also be a reason you need to stop taking Vraylar. &ldquo;Due to Vraylar not having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vraylar-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic option<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> available, insurance coverage and cost may be issues for patients,&rdquo; says Abelseth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for how long Vraylar stays in your system after stopping it, the drug&#8217;s plasma concentration decreases by 50% one week after the last dose of Vraylar. &ldquo;Therefore, it is assumed in an otherwise healthy individual without other factors affecting metabolism, the drug should be out of one&#8217;s system by two weeks,&rdquo; Abelseth says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two weeks is the maximum it takes, and for some people, it may be eliminated faster than this. The half-life of Vraylar <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7511151\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can range from two to four days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which correlates to it taking one to two weeks to be eliminated from the body. Regarding the elimination rate of medication, Dr. Sylejmani explains, &ldquo;The factors that determine this for all medications include body mass index, liver and kidney function, genetics, and any drugs that influence liver metabolism.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-for-vraylar-side-effects-to-go-away\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take for Vraylar side effects to go away?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vraylar can have noticeable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vraylar-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for some people, which is one of the reasons you may be looking to stop taking it. &ldquo;Some of the most common side effects of Vraylar are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK519543\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">akathisia (an inability to stay still)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and restlessness,&rdquo; Abelseth says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a615050.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MedlinePlus,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> other common side effects of Vraylar include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and agitation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble sleeping, including falling asleep and staying asleep<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balance issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased hunger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digestive trouble, including constipation, indigestion, and nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurry vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drooling<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As MedlinePlus notes, Vraylar can cause serious side effects at times. Immediate and short-term side effects like nausea, drowsiness, and dizziness usually resolve within two weeks. But, side effects like weight gain can take longer to resolve. &ldquo;It took one patient a full three months to lose the 20 pounds she gained, even after stopping Vraylar,&rdquo; he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"talk-to-your-healthcare-provider-before-stopping-vraylar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk to your healthcare provider before stopping Vraylar<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the risks and side effects of Vraylar may be concerning, it&rsquo;s important to not stop taking Vraylar without consulting your healthcare provider. &ldquo;Stopping any antipsychotic should only be done under guidance from your doctor,&rdquo; Dr. Sylejmani says. &ldquo;They will have to weigh the risks of relapse versus side effect burden.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sylejmani explains that the risks of abruptly stopping Vraylar include a recurrence of psychosis, mania, or mood swings. In many cases, slowly tapering Vraylar may be better than stopping it cold turkey.
