This is one of the most common procedures in the United States, with more than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.2 million people<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> undergoing gallbladder surgery each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most surgeries come with a list of post-op do\u2019s and don\u2019ts. Still, it\u2019s especially important to follow the recommended dietary guidelines after gallbladder surgery because of the gallbladder\u2019s role in the digestive system. Immediately after surgery, clear liquids are recommended. You can then graduate to small meals consisting of low-fat, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, and lean proteins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-foods-to-avoid-after-gallbladder-removal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 foods to avoid after gallbladder removal<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgery. Prepare to follow a liquid diet immediately after surgery and transition to a low-fat, balanced diet long-term, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dana Sloane, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gastroenterologist who practices at MedStar Health in Baltimore, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-solid-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Solid foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe initial diet after gallbladder surgery is usually clear liquids, such as broth,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medstarhealth.org\/doctors\/dana-a-sloane-md\">Dr. Sloane<\/a> says. Typically, patients follow a clear liquid diet followed by a full liquid diet and soft foods diet before transitioning to a regular diet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6238809\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is recommended to reduce side effects like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, which can occur following surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you should avoid solid foods immediately upon waking up from surgery, this period doesn\u2019t last long. \u201cA clear liquid diet is typically quickly advanced to a low-fat diet,\u201d Dr. Sloane says. Soft, solid foods are gradually introduced after the first 24 hours or several days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-high-fat-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. High-fat foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most important foods to avoid when recovering from gallbladder surgery are those high in dietary fats (aka lipids). This is because of the gallbladder\u2019s role in the digestive system and how its removal affects fat digestion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe gallbladder\u2019s primary role is to store bile, the digestive fluid produced by the liver, which is released into the small intestine,\u201d Dr. Sloane explains. \u201cBile acids help the body digest fats, so the primary change after gallbladder surgery is the reduced ability to digest dietary lipids.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main fats to avoid include saturated and trans fats. \u201cThese fats are more difficult to break down than unsaturated fats (aka healthy fats),\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholeisticliving.com\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenna Volpe, RDN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian in Austin, Texas. \u201cHowever, all high-fat foods should be avoided or minimized initially.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of fatty foods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fried foods like chips and fast food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red meat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dairy products like ice cream, butter, whole milk, and full-fat cheese<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oils and lard<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-fat condiments like creamy sauces and salad dressings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baked goods like cookies and pastries<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes healthy fats like avocados, nuts, and seeds. Eating high-fat foods immediately after gallbladder removal surgery can worsen some side effects, such as abdominal pain or loose stools, Dr. Sloane says. Though not everyone will experience an intolerance to fatty foods, avoidance of high-fat meals is recommended for people who develop <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-cholecystectomy syndrome<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(or PCS). \u201cThis occurs in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8573368\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 40%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of patients and is characterized by nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, bloating, or diarrhea,\u201d Dr. Sloane explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-high-cholesterol-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. High-cholesterol foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-fat foods should be avoided postoperatively, but foods high in cholesterol may be worth minimizing, too. \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37686860\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that diets that are high in fat and cholesterol may drive intestinal inflammation by disrupting the gut microbiome,\u201d Dr. Sloane explains. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC11200314\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that high-cholesterol foods can also increase the risk of PCS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High-cholesterol foods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatty and processed meats like sausage and bacon<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baked goods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some oils<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fried foods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods that contain trans fats<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"4-spicy-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Spicy foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallbladder removal patients are generally instructed to avoid spicy foods because they may be associated with gallstones, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459370\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The compound found in spicy food, capsaicin, is also known to cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8909049\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-foods-to-eat-after-gallbladder-removal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 foods to eat after gallbladder removal<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A low-fat diet is generally recommended after gallbladder removal, along with eating small meals and focusing on nutrient-dense foods. Here are some to include.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-minimally-processed-low-fat-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Minimally processed, low-fat foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLow-fat, whole or minimally processed nutrient-dense foods are generally liberalized and encouraged immediately after gallbladder surgery because they don\u2019t require bile acids to be fully broken down and digested,\u201d Volpe explains. This is also often incorporated with a bland diet, which includes soft, low-fiber, cooked, and non-spicy foods, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000068.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soft foods include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bananas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eggs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yogurt<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hot cereals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tofu<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soup<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooked vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"3-lean-proteins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Lean proteins<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protein is an essential nutrient, so it\u2019s important to get plenty of it after surgery. Protein can even help with the wound healing process, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8970868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volpe recommends focusing on lean protein, which can include both plant and animal sources. Lean meats can include chicken breast, turkey, fish, and egg whites, she says. Plant-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/high-protein-foods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protein sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can include soy, whole grains, and legumes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can even consume protein during the liquid phase of your post-op diet. Meat and bone broths are high in protein. As you transition to soft foods, you can gradually incorporate nonfat or low-fat dairy products like yogurt, which are high in protein.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-high-fiber-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. High-fiber foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/patientinstructions\/000117.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends a high-fiber diet post-op. Fiber isn\u2019t found in animal products, but it\u2019s abundant in plant-based foods like fresh produce, grains, hot and cold cereals, and legumes. It\u2019s an essential nutrient that prevents constipation, though it\u2019s also associated with a reduced risk of chronic disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the reintroduction of high-fiber foods should happen slowly. It\u2019s not a good idea to load up on fiber-rich foods immediately after surgery because this can have unpleasant side effects. Too much fiber can cause bloating, cramping, and have a laxative effect on some people, for example. So, slowly add fiber back into your diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-diet-tips-for-gallbladder-removal\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other diet tips for gallbladder removal<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eat smaller meals.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cPortion sizes do matter, and large meals may be difficult to tolerate immediately after surgery,\u201d Dr. Sloane says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid caffeine.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Caffeine is a stimulant, so avoiding it may reduce diarrhea and loose stools, Volpe explains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Avoid alcohol. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have a sensitivity to alcohol immediately after surgery, Dr. Sloane says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Speak with your healthcare provider.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you develop any new symptoms, follow up with your surgeon, Dr. Sloane says. Your surgeon is the best person to ask for individualized medical advice.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reintroduce foods slowly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To see how you tolerate certain foods, add them back into your diet one at a time, Dr. Sloane suggests.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"long-term-dietary-adjustments\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term dietary adjustments<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t any official dietary guidelines to follow after you\u2019ve had your gallbladder removed, but it\u2019s generally recommended to continue following a balanced diet long after your recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany patients who have had gallbladder surgery will go on to tolerate normal diets without difficulty,\u201d Dr. Sloane says. \u201cOther patients may have long-standing sensitivity to fatty meals, especially those who develop diarrhea or PCS.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An important long-term consideration is the reintroduction of healthy fats. \u201cLow-fat\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cno amount of fat,\u201d Volpe says.
