It belongs to a class of drugs called tetracyclic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and works by increasing the levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatryonline.org\/pb\/assets\/raw\/sitewide\/practice_guidelines\/guidelines\/mdd.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first-line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for depression, mirtazapine has many potential side effects, two of which are increased appetite and weight gain.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-mirtazapine-cause-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can mirtazapine cause weight gain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mirtazapine\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirtazapine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is known to increase appetite and cause weight gain whether it&rsquo;s taken as a short- or long-term treatment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nctr-crs.fda.gov\/fdalabel\/services\/spl\/set-ids\/ecf7826c-c583-4836-9b00-bf9e4b51a144\/spl-doc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, weight gain was a common side effect of mirtazapine in 12% of people.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4158430\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2011 Cochrane review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researchers concluded mirtazapine was more likely to cause drowsiness and weight gain in comparison to other antidepressants.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16649829\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2006 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that mirtazapine was associated with significantly increasing body weight, body fat mass, and leptin concentration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatrist.com\/jcp\/efficacy-mirtazapine-prevention-depressive-relapse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2001 clinical study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 21% of self-reported weight gain occurred after 12 weeks of mirtazapine treatment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-mirtazapine-cause-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does mirtazapine cause weight gain?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s unclear how mirtazapine causes weight gain, but a few hypotheses exist.
