Seven decades of use have resulted in plenty of accumulated knowledge about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&rsquo;s benefits and insight into its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One such unfortunate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Multiple reports have arisen connecting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> therapy to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so if you are thinking about starting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol tablets<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should look further into this association.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-propranolol-cause-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not listed among the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=b94dcec7-7633-4a33-9cea-48161adeaf93\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, effects like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shortness of breath<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slow heartbeat<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lightheadedness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fatigue, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are listed. This likely means <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not detected in the initial drug studies many years ago.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, subsequent research suggests there is an association. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1662668\/?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40-month study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving over three thousand patients randomized participants to either take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or placebo, an inactive tablet. After a year, those on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gained about two and a half pounds more than those on placebo, and that weight differential remained fairly stable and persistent through the end of the three-year study.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatria-danubina.com\/UserDocsImages\/pdf\/dnb_vol33_noSuppl%2013\/dnb_vol33_noSuppl%2013_330.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> citing case reports of individual patients indicated that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be upwards of twenty pounds. That does not mean everyone will gain that much or gain any weight. A six-month study found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3452015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8% of patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/migraine-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gained weight. Collectively, the research indicates a modest potential to put on some pounds, and if so, the amount is usually not profound, although more significant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-propranolol-cause-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaining weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> results from an imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended, or less commonly, from fluid accumulation. Although <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and another beta blocker like it can trigger congestive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart failure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decompensation in certain situations, they generally do not cause fluid retention otherwise.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more likely to result from reduced calories expended. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537590\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that our metabolism burns fewer calories and promotes higher <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood sugar levels<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This may be due to their additional influence on blood vessel dilation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerns about weight are one reason why <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not first-line treatment options for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diuretics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and angiotensin-converting enzyme <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ace-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACE <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are drug classes that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8109551\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effectively lower blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while not creating a tendency for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/calcium-channel-blockers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calcium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> channel blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another alternative antihypertensive, may lead to fluid retention but not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-avoid-propranolol-weight-gain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to avoid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each of its indications from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), such as treatment of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">angina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/chest-pain-causes-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chest pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> control when the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart rhythm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is disturbed, and risk reduction after a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as its off-label uses for performance anxiety and overactive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not the only choice. Alternatives are available, but in some cases, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propranolol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be the best option for efficacy at an affordable price. If so, get the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical advice<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see if measures like the following can be taken to prevent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduce portion sizes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> By cutting back the size of meals, calorie intake <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/weight-loss-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be reduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to offset the amount of calories expended.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Adjust carbohydrate intake.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Many of the calories in our diet come from carbohydrates.
