Sciatica is a painful and sometimes debilitating condition characterized by chronic pain, numbness, or weakness along the sciatic nerve, which extends from the buttocks down the back of each leg. For some people, leg pain from sciatica can be severe. According to the <\/span>Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine (<\/span><\/i>JABFM<\/span><\/i><\/a>), <\/span><\/i>traditional sciatica treatment includes pain management with pain medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or opioids and epidural steroid injections. But can oral steroid medications such as prednisone help?<\/span><\/p>\n

Prednisone<\/span><\/a> is an oral steroid medication used for various conditions that involve inflammation, including ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis. It works by reducing the activity of the immune system to decrease swelling. While <\/span>prednisone<\/span><\/a> may be prescribed for sciatica in certain cases, it isn’t a common treatment for the condition. <\/span><\/p>\n

Does prednisone help sciatica?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sciatica<\/span><\/a> occurs when the sciatic nerve gets pinched. Many things can cause this, such as a herniated disc in the spine, <\/span>obesity<\/span><\/a>, poor posture, or in rare cases, a tumor. Regardless of the cause, treatment options typically include nonpharmacologic interventions, such as physical therapy and medications. Medications used to relieve <\/span>sciatica<\/span><\/a> pain include oral <\/span>NSAIDs<\/span><\/a>, such as Advil (ibuprofen) or Naprosyn (naproxen), <\/span>opioids<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>muscle relaxants<\/span><\/a>, nerve pain drugs, and either oral or injectable <\/span>corticosteroid<\/span><\/a> medications. <\/span><\/p>\n

Prednisone is an oral steroid, so it isn’t typically recommended as a first-line treatment for sciatica. In fact, according to the American College of Physicians (<\/span>ACP<\/span><\/a>), there is minimal evidence supporting the use of any medications other than <\/span>Neurontin<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>gabapentin<\/span><\/a>) for sciatica. However, there is some evidence that oral steroids may be helpful in certain situations. <\/span><\/p>\n
