These drugs may help with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/11086-non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-medicines-nsaids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rheumatoid arthritis, period pain, muscle aches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other conditions. Because they fall into the same class of drugs, they shouldn&rsquo;t be taken together, as they can increase your risk of side effects. Continue reading to learn more about the risks of taking diclofenac with ibuprofen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-diclofenac-with-ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take diclofenac with ibuprofen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/kubanych-takyrbashev-a59a8211\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kubanych Takyrbashev, MD, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ph.D., a Health and Wellness adviser at NAO based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, since diclofenac and ibuprofen are both NSAIDs, taking them together can increase your risk of serious side effects. In addition, doubling up on multiple NSAIDs is not effective. &ldquo;Evidence shows that combining NSAIDs generally does not result in significantly more pain relief than giving a single NSAID in an adequate dosage,&rdquo; Dr. Takyrbashev says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While diclofenac is available as an oral or topical NSAID, neither form may be completely safe when combined with oral ibuprofen. You can still experience health risks with either form of diclofenac, although the systemic drug levels are significantly lower with topical application compared to oral administration, according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19841157\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2010 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-you-take-with-diclofenac-with-tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take with diclofenac with Tylenol?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is another pain relief medication that provides some similar benefits as ibuprofen but has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/diclofenac-oral-route\/precautions\/drg-20069748?p=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no known drug interactions with diclofenac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Acetaminophen is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482369\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic agent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can treat pain and fever. It does not reduce inflammation in the way that NSAIDs do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10796861\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 literature review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 11 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) revealed that combining oral acetaminophen with topical diclofenac significantly reduced pain for patients with osteoarthritis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10613619\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also supports the combination of diclofenac and acetaminophen for postoperative pain. The researchers discovered that combining oral diclofenac with oral acetaminophen offered extended relief for patients with moderate to severe pain after wisdom teeth removal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before combining diclofenac with acetaminophen, speak with your healthcare provider to ensure that this combination of drugs is safe for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"benefits-of-taking-diclofenac-with-ibuprofen-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of taking diclofenac with ibuprofen together<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no benefits to taking diclofenac with ibuprofen or other NSAIDs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and naproxen. Suppose you need to take a secondary pain medication with diclofenac. In that case, your healthcare provider <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/medicines\/diclofenac\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may recommend other over-the-counter or prescription drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as acetaminophen or codeine, in place of ibuprofen.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"risks-of-taking-diclofenac-with-ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risks of taking diclofenac with ibuprofen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hedvabarenholtzlevy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hadva Barenholtz Levy, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCGP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a senior pharmacist and the author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barenholtzlevy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe It&rsquo;s Your Medications<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of St. Louis, Missouri, mixing the oral formulations of diclofenac and ibuprofen may cause the following symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal upset, such as heartburn<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach ulcers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding in the stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart attack and stroke<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Takyrbashev says that taking diclofenac with ibuprofen may cause other cardiovascular issues. &ldquo;Both drugs increase blood pressure,&rdquo; he says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, NSAIDs may also cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/nsaids-including-aspirin-allergic-and-pseudoallergic-reactions#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as rhinoconjunctivitis, bronchospasm, urticaria\/angioedema, and anaphylaxis.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&rsquo;re experiencing any of these side effects, please seek immediate medical help.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the potential health complications that can arise from taking diclofenac and ibuprofen together, other precautions should be considered before mixing these medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Levy, the following factors can lead to a higher risk of experiencing serious side effects from diclofenac and ibuprofen:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being 65 and older<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having kidney or liver impairment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a history of stomach ulcers or stomach bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heavy alcohol use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being a smoker<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using other medications, such as anticoagulants, aspirin, and other antiplatelet drugs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Levy also adds that if you have high blood pressure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(hypertension)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or heart failure, taking these medications together can worsen these conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-after-taking-diclofenac-can-you-take-ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long after taking diclofenac can you take ibuprofen?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because most healthcare providers advise against combining diclofenac with ibuprofen, there are no guidelines on dosage schedules. However, if your healthcare provider decides that taking both drugs can improve your health, they can give you personalized medical advice on how you should take them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&rsquo;re taking diclofenac or ibuprofen tablets individually, here are Dr. Levy&lsquo;s recommendations for a safe dosing schedule:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Oral diclofenac tablets (prescription):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Take as needed two to four times daily (depending on formulation) with food to minimize stomach side effects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Diclofenac gel (over-the-counter): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply the gel as needed every six hours up to four times daily on the affected area. &ldquo;The amount depends on whether you&rsquo;re treating the upper or lower extremities (i.e., arms, legs, hands, and feet), &ldquo; Dr. Levy says.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ibuprofen tablets (over-the-counter): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take 200 to 400 milligrams (mg) every four to six hours with food to prevent stomach upset. &ldquo;The maximum is 1,200 mg per day unless otherwise instructed by a healthcare provider,&rdquo; Dr. Levy says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your health conditions, medications like diclofenac and ibuprofen may be further adjusted. &ldquo;Dosage should be reduced, or possibly avoided if a person has liver impairment or decreased kidney function,&rdquo; Dr. Levy says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, mixing diclofenac with ibuprofen can cause unwanted side effects due to the drug interactions between these NSAIDs. &ldquo;Patients should only mix their medications under the supervision of their doctor,&rdquo; Dr. Takyrbashev says. &ldquo;An alternative pain management technique, the use of one NSAID, is most often safer.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren) and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reduce pain and inflammation in certain situations.
