There are tons of gut health drinks, but kombucha is the star of the show. It\u2019s rooted in many centuries of traditional Chinese medicine, and it may provide numerous health benefits thanks to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/probiotics-do-they-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produced during the fermentation process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can brew kombucha yourself with tea, small levels of sugar, and store-bought or homemade SCOBY, or you can take a shortcut and purchase one of the many commercial glass bottles sold on the shelves of local health food stores and supermarkets. But why, exactly, should you do either of these things? Here\u2019s what the experts (and research) have to say about the perks of drinking kombucha as part of a healthy diet, which include everything from lower blood sugar and cholesterol to better energy, digestion, and liver health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/lp\/1\"><b>RELATED: See our best supplement prices<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"10-health-benefits-of-kombucha\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 health benefits of kombucha<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theceliacmd.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Burkhart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, RD, founder of The Celiac MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most of what\u2019s known about kombucha products comes from animal studies rather than human studies. Those results have been promising, spurring more investigation into this fermented beverage in ongoing human trials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Based on the evidence we have so far, here are eight potential kombucha benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-improves-gut-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Improves gut health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fermentation process of kombucha produces beneficial bacteria that can support gut health and improve digestion, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutritionnowcounseling.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lauren Manaker, MS, RD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian based in Charleston, South Carolina<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These good bacteria, known commonly as probiotics, are the same <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-gut-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gut health superstars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found in fermented foods like kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut. They provide digestive benefits by helping to balance the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-gut-health-impacts-your-well-being\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gut microbiome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, potentially alleviating issues like bloating and constipation, Manaker explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/the-best-diet-for-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connection between probiotics and gut health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is pretty clear, keep in mind that kombucha isn\u2019t an exact science, so the quality or quantity of probiotics in any given kombucha drink cannot be guaranteed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dietitianinsights.com\/dietitians\/sheri-gaw-rdn-cdces\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheri Gaw, RDN, CDCES<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, owner of The Plant Strong Dietitian and spokesperson for Dietitian Insights, points to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10178031\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systematic review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing that the conditions during fermentation, such as the type of starter, duration of fermentation, and temperature, can influence the strains of bacteria and yeast that are produced.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, too, that homemade kombucha will have a different probiotic profile than store-bought kombucha: \u201cGenerally, traditionally fermented kombucha contains live cultures that can contribute to gut health, but some commercial brands undergo pasteurization or filtration, which can reduce the number of beneficial bacteria,\u201d says Manaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-may-improve-cholesterol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. May improve cholesterol<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans of kombucha like to talk about the drink\u2019s positive effects on cholesterol, and while it\u2019s a definite possibility, the research in humans is still developing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/clinicalnutritionespen.com\/article\/S2405-4577(22)00240-6\/abstract\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at the cholesterol-lowering impact of a sea grape kombucha drink in mice. After four weeks, the drink lowered total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol levels while raising HDL cholesterol levels. It showed stronger effects at the higher dose for most blood fat markers, but not for total cholesterol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study noted that the cholesterol-improving activity of the kombucha drink was similar to a 250 microgram\/milliliter dose of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/orlistat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orlistat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medication that blocks fat absorption in the diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-may-lower-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. May lower blood sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking kombucha could potentially benefit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially in helping them lower or maintain blood sugar levels. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10426908\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pilot study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people with Type 2 diabetes who drank kombucha for four weeks had lower average fasting blood glucose levels, an effect that has also been seen in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8909623\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent rodent studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though the sample size was incredibly small at only 12 participants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe findings from this study are promising since it can be hard for people with diabetes to adhere to drinking only water,\u201d says Gaw, while clarifying that more research is needed to support these results and determine the best daily dose of kombucha for people with Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-boosts-energy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Boosts energy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there isn&#8217;t universal agreement about the best time of day to enjoy kombucha, many people find that drinking it in the morning can provide a refreshing boost of energy and clarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe natural caffeine and B vitamins present in kombucha may help combat that mid-morning slump,\u201d Manaker explains. \u201cConsuming kombucha before a meal may aid digestion by stimulating stomach acids and preparing the digestive system for food.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaw agrees, noting that the one-two punch of probiotics and caffeine in kombucha can \u201creally get things moving regarding digestion and energy levels.\u201d That said, you can drink kombucha at any time of day or night (as long as it doesn\u2019t keep you up!).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-may-lower-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. May lower anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve heard that kombucha isn\u2019t just good for your gut but might also benefit your brain, there may<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be some truth to that, but the evidence hasn\u2019t caught up yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a significant gap between the online health claims about kombucha\u2019s impact on mental health and actual scientific studies on its effects on conditions like anxiety and depression,\u201d says Dr. Burkhart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Burkhart also says the kombucha-mental health connection is certainly plausible because of what we know about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6469458\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gut-brain axis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and how <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anti-anxiety-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what we eat can affect our mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; in other words, because kombucha can reduce inflammation, provide probiotics, and positively influence the gut microbiome, it\u2019s entirely possible it could have a positive effect on anxiety. But is it true? Not quite: Dr. Burkhart says no current research suggests that kombucha directly promotes weight loss or reduces belly fat, but it may support weight management by supplying you with beneficial probiotics, reducing inflammation, and helping you balance your blood sugar levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basically, if you\u2019re exercising and eating for weight loss, kombucha might give your current routine a boost, but like anything else, it\u2019s important not to overdo it. Consuming excessive amounts of kombucha will add unwanted calories, says Dr. Burkhart, potentially contributing to weight gain rather than weight loss (so make sure you check the serving size of your favorite store-bought kombucha).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-aids-detoxification\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Aids detoxification<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with healthy livers shouldn\u2019t worry too much about taking nutritional steps to \u201cdetox\u201d their bodies because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279393\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detoxifying is your liver\u2019s primary job<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If it\u2019s functioning correctly, it\u2019s doing that for you! But people with certain liver conditions, particularly nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fatty-liver-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefit from consuming foods and drinks with detoxifying properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like kombucha, at least according to a few recent rodent studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0753332222010496\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the probiotics in kombucha reduced the severity of NAFLD and improved liver damage; a few years earlier, another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6539514\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found similar results. However, these findings haven\u2019t been replicated in human trials yet, so more research is definitely needed before experts can say that drinking kombucha benefits people with liver damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-contains-antioxidants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Contains antioxidants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kombucha contains antioxidants that mostly come from the tea leaves themselves, though fermentation may boost their activity. \u201cThe type of tea\u2014black, green, or herbal\u2014can contribute various antioxidant compounds, including polyphenols like flavonoids, which play a crucial role in combating oxidative stress in the body linked to chronic diseases and aging,\u201d Manaker explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While not exclusively about kombucha, a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7283370\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that tea polyphenols have antioxidant benefits that may extend to protecting cells against certain types of cancer and other chronic diseases. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6512146\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> links the polyphenols in black tea, specifically, to a multitude of beneficial effects ranging from improved weight loss and blood pressure to reduced risk of cardiovascular events and stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9-may-improve-heart-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. May improve heart health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8401746\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that probiotics, like the kind contained in kombucha, may have a positive effect on heart health by improving the gut microbiome and reducing inflammation. However, more research is needed to establish these effects definitively.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"10-may-help-heal-ulcers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. May help heal ulcers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4906699\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">probiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in kombucha may support gut health and potentially help in managing ulcers. However, drinking kombucha is not a substitute for medical treatment. If you\u2019ve been diagnosed with ulcers, follow your healthcare provider\u2019s guidance for appropriate management.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"kombucha-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kombucha side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people can safely drink a moderate amount of kombucha each day, but there are a few possible adverse effects you might experience based on what kombucha is and how it\u2019s made.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"a-buzz-or-feeling-of-euphoria\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A \u201cbuzz\u201d or feeling of euphoria<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fermentation process used to create kombucha produces a very small amount of alcohol, says Gaw, which could leave you with a buzz if you consume multiple servings or excessive amounts. Generally speaking, though, Gaw says the amount of alcohol present in one serving of kombucha is usually not enough to cause this sensation. Still, pregnant women should avoid kombucha and other alcoholic beverages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you might feel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good after drinking kombucha (possibly even euphoric!), thanks to its high content of probiotics, vitamins, and minerals, notes Gaw. That said, this has yet to be presented as scientific evidence and is primarily anecdotal at this point.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"dizziness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, Gaw says there have been some reported cases of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9265386\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dizziness as a side effect of kombucha<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, although the exact cause isn\u2019t clear. It may be related to drinking large amounts quickly or its mild alcohol content. On the other hand, she says there isn&#8217;t much clinical evidence supporting this, and most people who drink normal amounts of kombucha don&#8217;t experience any side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be on the safe side, Gaw recommends that people with diabetes or who take blood sugar-lowering medications speak with their healthcare provider or a registered dietitian before consuming kombucha on a regular basis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"stomach-discomfort\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach discomfort<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While kombucha can work wonders for digestion, Manaker says it\u2019s important to be aware that some people will find it difficult to digest, especially if they have sensitive stomachs or certain digestive conditions like IBS. Kombucha is a fizzy beverage, and its carbonation and acidity may cause discomfort or worsen symptoms for people with digestive health issues. Introduce your body to kombucha gradually while paying attention to how your stomach reacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGenerally, moderate consumption\u2014around 8 to 16 ounces daily\u2014can provide health benefits without overwhelming the digestive system, especially for those new to kombucha,\u201d Manaker says, suggesting that people start with smaller quantities (such as 4 ounces), allow your body to adjust, then gradually increase your intake as tolerated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-kombucha-safe-for-everyone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is kombucha safe for everyone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kombucha isn\u2019t likely to be dangerous for the majority of people and may even support a healthy immune system, but it\u2019s also not recommended for some populations. Dr. Burkhart says you should not drink kombucha or only consume it under your healthcare provider\u2019s supervision if you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have yeast or mold sensitivities because it could cause an allergic reaction due to its fermentation process<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are pregnant or breastfeeding, which may be a concern due to the alcohol created during fermentation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a history of alcohol use disorder (again, because of the small amount of naturally occurring alcohol)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are immunocompromised, because commercial kombucha lacks regulation and could be contaminated with potentially harmful bacteria<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some types of kombucha may include a warning label, says Dr. Burkhart, based on where it\u2019s manufactured and sold. This is likely due to the alcohol content of the beverage and compliance with state and federal laws, she explains, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.p65warnings.ca.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California\u2019s Prop 65 cancer warnings about potentially harmful or cancer-causing substances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That doesn\u2019t mean your daily dose of kombucha raises your cancer risk all by itself\u2014just that you need to consume it wisely, in appropriate amounts, and be aware of what you\u2019re getting inside different varieties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile many commercially available kombucha options promote their probiotic content, it&#8217;s important to remember that not all kombuchas contain live probiotics by the time they reach consumers,\u201d says Manaker. \u201cVarious factors can affect the viability of these beneficial bacteria, including pasteurization, prolonged shelf life, and storage conditions, [all of which can] unfortunately eliminate the live probiotics that are key to delivering gut health benefits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read your nutrition labels carefully, Manaker advises, looking for terms like &#8220;raw,&#8221; &#8220;unpasteurized,&#8221; or &#8220;contains live cultures&#8221; to make sure you\u2019re choosing kombucha that still has live bacteria with probiotic properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line-is-kombucha-good-for-you\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Is kombucha good for you?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kombucha can be packed full of probiotics, antioxidants, and B vitamins, all of which contribute to better health and wellness in a variety of ways: potentially lowering blood sugar and cholesterol, improving digestion, supporting weight loss, and protecting against disease.
