Individuals with fewer cravings tend to eat less and, by extension, lose weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research on capsaicin&#8217;s weight loss benefits is limited. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24630935\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with 15 participants found that those who took 2.56 milligrams of capsaicin with each meal reported more satisfaction and fullness than the control group (people who did not receive any treatment). People in the capsaicin group also overate less than the control group when offered an all-you-can-eat dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"boosted-metabolism\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boosted metabolism<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCapsaicin can offer a modest \u2018metabolic boost\u2019 through thermogenesis \u2026 the process where your body produces heat by burning calories,\u201d says Jacqueline Gomes, RD, a New Jersey-based registered dietitian and owner of<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.busywomanweightloss.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Busy Woman Weight Loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIf you\u2019ve ever eaten a really spicy meal and felt yourself getting warm, that\u2019s thermogenesis at work.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, capsaicin\u2019s power to boost metabolism is not enough to lead to significant weight loss, according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/victoriashantaretelny.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vicki Shanta Retelny<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RDN, a Chicago-based dietitian and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Total Body Diet For Dummies. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA supplement cannot take the place of eating balanced, well-portioned meals, getting physical activity, sleeping well, and managing stress levels,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"higher-calorie-burn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher calorie burn<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If capsaicin\u2019s thermogenic factors temporarily boost your metabolic rate, you will also temporarily burn more calories when capsaicin is in your system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many calories you burn on capsaicin depends on several factors, including your age, body weight, and energy expenditure. According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-12\/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans_2020-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dietary Guidelines for Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most adults need between 1,600 and 2,400 calories daily for weight management (maintaining your current weight). For weight loss, you should cut your daily intake and\/or exercise to burn more calories daily. Capsaicin might offer a slight weight loss boost by helping you burn more calories faster.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"increased-fat-oxidation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased fat oxidation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA study published in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6088424\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMC Obesity<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrated that supplementing with 4 mg of capsaicinoids led to a 5.91% reduction in body fat over 12 weeks compared to a placebo [inactive medicine] group,\u201d says Gomes. However, it is not known whether participants\u2019 weight or body mass index (BMI) stayed steady after the trial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Singh explains capsaicin\u2019s potential role in fat loss: Capsaicin raises internal body temperature, boosts fat oxidation (aka, fat burning at the cellular level), and increases oxygen consumption. However, he says capsaicin seems to primarily affect brown adipose tissue, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/24052-adipose-tissue-body-fat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iron-rich body fat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found mainly in the upper back. When it comes to weight loss, brown fat is less of a concern than white adipose tissue, or white fat, the umbrella term for subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"improved-gut-microbiome\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved gut microbiome<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/10.1128\/msystems.00964-21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that the health of your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-improve-gut-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gut microbiome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can impact how easy it is for you to lose weight. Though she says \u201cthe research is not robust\u201d on capsaicin\u2019s role in this, Shanta Retelny explains that a healthy gut microbiome plays a role in a healthy metabolism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"optimal-capsaicin-intake-for-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimal capsaicin intake for weight loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experts agree: If you\u2019re interested in taking capsaicin for weight loss, a supplement might be better than packing your plate full of hot peppers. Besides, Dr. Singh says dietary capsaicin intake is \u201crarely enough to help induce weight loss.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for ideal intake, both Dr. Singh and Gomes suggest 2 milligrams per meal. While higher doses are considered generally safe, the more capsaicin you consume in one sitting, the more likely you are to experience gastrointestinal irritation. Beyond dosage, it\u2019s important to seek out a third-party tested capsaicin supplement from a reputable brand. If you experience serious side effects, consult a healthcare professional. Also, check with a healthcare provider before using high doses of capsaicin supplements or using capsaicin for a long time. While there have been no reports of human overdose on capsaicin, there have been reports of individuals who have gone to the emergency room with symptoms of intense sweating and chest pain after using capsaicin for weight loss, according to the NIH.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-capsaicin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take capsaicin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because capsaicin can cause gastrointestinal side effects, people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ulcerative-colitis-vs-crohns\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammatory bowel diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as Crohn\u2019s disease or ulcerative colitis should avoid this supplement.
