This weekly injectable drug is part of a class of medications called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glp-1-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which mimic the GLP-1 hormone your body normally produces to help you better manage your blood sugar and lose weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is relatively new, but studies show it\u2019s generally safe. The most commonly reported side effects are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain, though some people experience other less common side effects, including vision changes and eye problems. Part of the reason this happens, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhealth.org\/doctors\/frederick-fraunfelder-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frederick Fraunfelder, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, University of Missouri Health Care ophthalmologist and chair of ophthalmology at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, is because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diabetic-retinopathy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes can cause vision problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and taking Ozempic can make them worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s what to know about how Ozempic can affect your eyes and what you should do if you notice vision changes while taking the drug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ozempic-cause-eye-problems\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Ozempic cause eye problems?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExperiencing eye problems while taking Ozempic is rare,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reliantlifelv.com\/about\/staff\/shivesh-kumar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shivesh Kumar, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, physician and CEO of ReliantLife Weight Loss &amp; Hormone Therapy. It\u2019s an isolated side effect that has been reported in scientific studies but isn\u2019t commonly seen by healthcare providers among their real-life patients. Dr. Kumar says that even the scientific reporting is limited\u2014the studies are preliminary, and there\u2019s no definitive link between Ozempic and eye problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Ozempic eye issues most commonly reported are blurred vision, diabetic retinopathy, macular edema, and a condition called non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION),\u201d says Dr. Fraunfelder. Read more about each eye-related condition below.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"blurred-vision\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurred vision\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Fraunfelder, blurred vision is one of the most common eye-related side effects of Ozempic. Drugs that lower blood sugar also affect the amount of fluid in your body. \u201cBecause the lens of your eye is made mostly of water, it\u2019s sensitive to dehydration or overhydration,\u201d explains Dr. Fraunfelder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the shape of the lens changes in response to blood sugar changes, it can cause blurred vision, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/newsroom\/news-releases\/detail\/weight-loss-drug-and-eye-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Ophthalmology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is usually temporary, though, lasting three or four months, and doesn\u2019t indicate any damage to your vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"naion-a-potential-ozempic-eye-condition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NAION: A potential Ozempic eye condition<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NAION is essentially an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennmedicine.org\/for-patients-and-visitors\/find-a-program-or-service\/ophthalmology\/eye-stroke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye stroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, caused by the loss of blood flow to the optic nerve, resulting in sudden blurred vision, vision changes, and potentially even blindness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brighamandwomens.org\/neurology\/neuro-ophthalmology\/non-arteritic-anterior-ischemic-optic-neuropathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, experts don\u2019t fully understand why NAION occurs, but they know that certain conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, increase your risk. Based on the results of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaophthalmology\/fullarticle\/2820255\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s possible that taking semaglutide also increases your risk. In this study of more than 16,000 people, those taking semaglutide were more likely to develop NAION than people taking non-GLP-1 agonists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that is the only currently published study finding a link between semaglutide and NAION, and many of the study participants had one or more other risk factors for the condition, like diabetes or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/obesity-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obesity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dr. Fraunfelder says it\u2019s important to know that Ozempic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raise your risk for NAION, but it\u2019s only a possibility at this point and more research is needed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"diabetic-retinopathy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aao.org\/eye-health\/diseases\/what-is-diabetic-retinopathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a serious complication of diabetes caused by high blood sugar. It happens when the nerves of the retina are damaged and swell, close up, or grow abnormally. All of these changes can result in blurred vision, seeing floaters, and possibly losing sight completely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Ozempic can potentially reduce your risk of diabetes complications such as retinopathy by lowering your blood glucose levels, one large clinical trial called<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8727607\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the SUSTAIN trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that semaglutide could worsen diabetic retinopathy symptoms. However, other research\u2014like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ophthalmologyscience.org\/article\/S2666-9145(24)00083-6\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study performed at the Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014hasn\u2019t come to the same conclusion. Some experts have suggested that the cause of worsening symptoms in the SUSTAIN trial may have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10130900\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the rapid change in blood glucose levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought on by starting semaglutide treatment rather than the drug itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More information is needed about semaglutide\u2019s effects on eye health, especially in people with diabetic retinopathy. But Dr. Kumar says that if you are taking Ozempic and not experiencing any significant side effects, you should keep using it because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lower-blood-sugar-fast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering your blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and losing weight are more beneficial to your eye health in the long run.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"macular-edema\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macular edema\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The macula is part of the retina. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nei.nih.gov\/learn-about-eye-health\/eye-conditions-and-diseases\/macular-edema\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macular edema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs when the blood vessels of the retina leak into the macula (usually as a result of uncontrolled diabetes or as a complication of diabetic retinopathy). The macula can swell and cause blurry or distorted vision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the other potential eye complications included here, more research is needed about the risk of developing macular edema while taking Ozempic. Still, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38636788\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study published in 2024<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found an increased risk of diabetic macular edema (DME) in people with Type 2 diabetes using semaglutide, as well as an increased risk of worsening diabetic retinopathy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although eye side effects like retinopathy are listed as a potential complication of taking semaglutide, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most commonly reported side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are gastrointestinal. When taking Ozempic, you may have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation, and abdominal pain because of the delay in gastric emptying caused by the medication. Some people also have redness, itching, or swelling at the injection site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-heart-palpitations\/\"><b>Can Ozempic cause heart palpitations?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-manage-eye-problems-and-other-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to manage eye problems and other Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re having GI distress from taking Ozempic, there are a few things you can do to mitigate some of the medication\u2019s effects on your stomach. The manufacturer of Ozempic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozempic.com\/how-to-take\/side-effects.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recommends staying hydrated, eating smaller meals, avoiding greasy, fatty, and sugary foods, and avoiding lying down after eating to help you manage your GI symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t manage eye-related side effects of Ozempic with dietary changes, though\u2014so what can you do? Dr. Kumar says most side effects are dose-dependent, meaning higher doses often cause more severe side effects. \u201cYour healthcare provider may regulate your dose to mitigate your symptoms,\u201d he explains, \u201ckeeping you on the lowest beneficial dose\u201d (i.e., the dose that works well with the fewest side effects).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, if you\u2019re experiencing any changes to your vision while taking Ozempic, contact your healthcare provider or see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. Dr. Fraunfelder says an eye exam could help your provider distinguish between a temporary change in vision related to blood sugar changes and a more serious condition, like NAION or worsening diabetic retinopathy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust don\u2019t stop taking Ozempic cold turkey,\u201d says Dr. Kumar, \u201cespecially not without talking to your provider first.\u201d Given the lack of scientific research, it is difficult to attribute vision changes to semaglutide, especially in people taking the medication to treat medical conditions that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affect the eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving diabetes\u2014even mildly uncontrolled diabetes over many years\u2014is far more dangerous to your eyes and your visual acuity than semaglutide would be,\u201d Dr. Kumar says.\u201dBy and large, controlling blood sugar and your A1C levels is more important for your sight.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic alternatives\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other GLP-1 agonists (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trulicity\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mounjaro-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are approved to treat Type 2 diabetes, but since they work similarly, these medications usually carry the same potential risk of vision changes as Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re looking for other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that aren\u2019t GLP-1 agonists, talk to your healthcare provider about oral diabetes medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-vs-jardiance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glipizide-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glipizide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aren\u2019t known to have eye-related side effects. Just keep in mind that these drugs have other side effects, and may not work for you or be compatible with other coexisting medical conditions.
