These hormones are produced in response to thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) being released by the pituitary gland. The three main types of thyroid meds are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Levothyroxine: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levothyroxine is the first-line treatment since it is a synthetic form of T4 that the body naturally converts to T3, the active thyroid hormone. \u201cIt\u2019s preferred because it is easy to dose accurately, has minimal side effects, and closely mimics natural thyroid function,\u201d Dr. Pagan-Mendez explains.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Liothyronine: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLiothyronine is a synthetic form of T3 and may be used alongside levothyroxine in patients who continue to experience symptoms despite adequate T4 replacement,\u201d Dr. Pagan-Mendez says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Desiccated thyroid extract: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This extract is derived from pig thyroid glands and contains T4 and T3. \u201cIt is less commonly used due to difficulties in regulating the exact dose and increased potential for side effects,\u201d Dr. Pagan-Mendez says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levothyroxine is the most commonly used medication for the treatment of hypothyroidism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-when-you-stop-taking-levothyroxine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens when you stop taking levothyroxine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like with any medication, levothyroxine has potential side effects such as nausea and fatigue. If you\u2019re experiencing side effects and your hypothyroid symptoms have improved, it can be tempting to stop taking this daily Rx.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if you stop taking levothyroxine, symptoms of hypothyroidism may return, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coarse hair<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoarse voice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menstrual cycles that are irregular or heavier than usual<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muscle weakness, aches, tenderness, and stiffness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puffy face<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sensitivity to cold<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowed heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thinning hair<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight gain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you abruptly discontinue the medication without proper medical supervision, you can experience serious complications. For example, \u201cbradycardia, or slow heart rate, and possible heart failure can also occur,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biote.com\/medical-advisory-board\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cory Rice, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dr-cory-rice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Underlying cardiovascular disease, especially in the elderly population, can worsen as well. Metabolic issues can lead to changes in a person\u2019s lipid profile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you might not notice any changes immediately. Levothyroxine generally stays in the body for about seven days, Dr. Nair says. Over a few weeks, you may notice the following changes, according to Dr. Nair:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Week 1:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The body starts to feel the absence of thyroid hormone. You may experience fatigue, mild depression, and difficulty concentrating. Some may not notice significant changes yet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Week 2:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms intensify. Fatigue, weight gain, and cold intolerance may become more obvious as metabolism begins to slow down as T4 levels decrease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Week 3:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cognitive functions may decline further, leading to brain fog, forgetfulness, and mood swings. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9354917\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that patients experienced severe complications that included an accumulation of fluid in the sac that surrounds the heart (pericardial effusion), low hemoglobin levels (anemia), low white blood cell counts (leukopenia), airway obstruction due to swelling of the tongue, and decreased heart rate (bradycardia). These are not the only serious complications associated with untreated hypothyroidism.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-you-die-if-you-stop-taking-levothyroxine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you die if you stop taking levothyroxine?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, in rare cases, you can die if you stop taking levothyroxine abruptly and without medical supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThyroid hormone should not be stopped altogether when a person is hypothyroid,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/case.edu\/medicine\/diabetes\/about\/faculty-and-staff\/revital-gorodeski-baskin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revital Gorodeski-Baskin, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an associate professor at the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. \u201cIf this happens, that person will slowly become more and more hypothyroid, and this is very dangerous. In the most extreme case, untreated hypothyroidism can lead to myxedema coma, and this is life-threatening.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thyroid.org\/patient-thyroid-information\/ct-for-patients\/april-2017\/vol-10-issue-4-p-3-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Thyroid Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, myxedema coma is a medical emergency. Patients are often treated in intensive care units because of the increased risk of death. You may experience very low body temperature, slow heart rate, low blood pressure, a change in mental status, and poor organ function. If patients with this life-threatening condition are not treated promptly, they may not survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals with multiple significant health conditions may be at an increased risk of death when discontinuing levothyroxine.\u201cTheir medical issues can be exacerbated, and if they are elderly, deconditioned, or otherwise in very poor health, the abrupt cessation of thyroid medication can make their mortality risk much higher,\u201d Dr. Rice says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-can-you-safely-stop-taking-levothyroxine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can you safely stop taking levothyroxine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you feel you need to stop taking thyroid medications, it\u2019s important to consult with a healthcare professional. \u201cThey will determine if it is safe to stop based on your underlying condition,\u201d says Dr. Pagan-Mendez. \u201cIn cases where hypothyroidism is no longer present, the medication may be stopped or tapered gradually, with regular monitoring of your thyroid hormone levels to ensure that treatment is no longer needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some patients can live with hypothyroidism without <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/for-borderline-underactive-thyroid-drug-therapy-isnt-always-necessary-201310096740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ever needing thyroid medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, this is only the case for people with very mild or borderline hypothyroidism or transient (temporary) hypothyroidism due to inflammation of the thyroid gland or a medication that causes hypothyroidism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-happens-if-you-miss-a-dose-of-levothyroxine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you miss a dose of levothyroxine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accidentally missing a medication dose can happen to anyone. \u201cMissing a single dose generally has minimal impact, but missing multiple doses can lead to a return of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/thyroid-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypothyroid symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Dr. Pagan-Mendez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a patient misses a thyroid medication dose, the general recommendation is to take the missed dose as soon as they remember, unless it is almost time for their next dose,\u201d explains Dr. Rice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking your thyroid medication is critical for avoiding the short- and long-term complications of hypothyroidism.
