Continue reading to learn more about Wegovy interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"wegovy-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy drug interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before you use Wegovy, be sure to tell your healthcare professional about all the medications you take. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and dietary supplements. Now, let\u2019s talk about medications that interact with Wegovy, including insulin, certain diabetes medications, and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"insulin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/insulin-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to control blood sugar (blood glucose) levels in people with diabetes. It is important to know how and when to check your blood sugar, as well as what levels are considered low for you. You should also know what to do for episodes of low blood sugar (generally by consuming a certain amount of fast-acting carbohydrates such as glucose tablets or juice). Sulfonylureas include the following drugs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amaryl (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glimepiride-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glimepiride<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabeta (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/glyburide\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glyburide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glucotrol XL (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glipizide-vs-metformin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glipizide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/meglitinides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meglitinides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a class of drugs used for people with Type 2 diabetes. They include the following drugs:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nateglinide\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nateglinide<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/repaglinide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repaglinide<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take a sulfonylurea or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9807016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meglitinide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drug in combination with Wegovy, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia (as with insulin, described above). Your healthcare provider may need to decrease the dose of your sulfonylurea or meglitinide medication and recommend close blood sugar monitoring. As with insulin, you should be familiar with the symptoms of hypoglycemia and know how to treat it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-semaglutide-products-or-other-glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other semaglutide products or other GLP-1 agonists<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Wegovy, semaglutide is available as an active ingredient in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-i-get-ozempic-for-25-a-month\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an injectable drug\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rybelsus-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an oral drug<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=ee06186f-2aa3-4990-a760-757579d8f77b#ID_ca0f9654-658b-4f12-af3b-b8fabad71403\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that if you use Wegovy, you should not use any other semaglutide products or any other drugs in the GLP-1 agonist class of medications. Some examples of other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glp-1-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/byetta-5-mcg-pen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Byetta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (exenatide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/trulicity-vs-victoza\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dulaglutide)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/victoza-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (liraglutide)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you take any of the above drugs or any other GLP-1 agonists, you should not use Wegovy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"oral-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy delays gastric emptying, which means food stays in the stomach longer, leading to increased feelings of fullness and reduced appetite. This can also affect the absorption of other drugs, as it may delay the time it takes for these medications to reach the small intestine, where absorption primarily occurs, potentially altering their effectiveness. In clinical trials, these types of drug interactions were not significant. However, certain drugs are known as narrow therapeutic index drugs. This means that there is a small margin between effective and toxic doses, requiring precise dosage adjustments and close monitoring. Some examples of these types of drugs include the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/new-blood-thinners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> warfarin, the anticonvulsant <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenytoin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenytoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the thyroid replacement medication <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-for-levothyroxine-to-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levothyroxine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the drug interaction effect is not fully known, experts recommend close monitoring of people who take narrow therapeutic index drugs with Wegovy. You can also ask your healthcare provider if you should time any of your oral medications differently on the day of the week that you inject Wegovy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-wegovy-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Wegovy interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Wegovy interactions include certain medical conditions, green tea, alcohol, garlic, niacin, and DHEA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"certain-medical-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medical conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have certain health conditions, you should not take Wegovy. Wegovy has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/black-box-warning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black box warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stating that it has caused thyroid tumors in animal studies. Although the effect on humans is not known, the following people should not use Wegovy:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, anyone who has had allergic reactions to Wegovy (or any semaglutide product, such as in Ozempic or Rybelsus) should never take Wegovy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should not use Wegovy if you are pregnant. Those who are breastfeeding should consult their healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tell your healthcare provider if you have any other medical problems, especially if you have:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) or a history of pancreatitis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diabetic-retinopathy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"green-tea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green tea<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you drink <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/?drugLabelId=24167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green tea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or use green tea supplements, it may lower blood sugar. So, if you use Wegovy and drink green tea, you may need closer blood sugar monitoring to prevent hypoglycemia. Check with your healthcare provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While alcohol does not chemically interact with Wegovy, you should consult your healthcare provider if you consume alcohol. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/health-wellness\/alcohol-and-diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Diabetes Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, alcohol can affect blood sugar levels in several ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive drinking can increase blood sugar and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-a1c-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hemoglobin A1C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a measure of blood sugar control over a three-month period)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol can also lower blood sugar, especially on an empty stomach. However, garlic supplements, especially in higher doses, may lower blood sugar.
