Like Wegovy and Trulicity, Ozempic belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, or GLP-1 receptor agonists. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These medications reduce blood sugar levels and can<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glp-1-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assist with weight management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by regulating food intake and slowing gastric emptying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s common to have a decreased appetite on Ozempic, that\u2019s not the only side effect you may experience. For example, Ozempic can cause constipation, changes in bowel movements, bloating, and stomach pain. Among patients taking a 0.5 mg dose of Ozempic, 5% reported constipation versus 3.1% of those taking a 1.0 mg dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36339230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that constipation may occur in up to 13.0% of those taking Ozempic. What\u2019s more, the symptom may be more common among those taking the drug for off-label uses not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificheightsplasticsurgery.com\/about\/dr-jonathan-kaplan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jonathan Kaplan, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified plastic surgeon and GLP-1 expert at Pacific Heights Plastic Surgery in San Francisco, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while constipation is not the most common side effect of Ozempic, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some patients may experience less frequent bowel movements than usual while on the medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does Ozempic constipation last? That depends on how long it takes for your body to adjust to the medication, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carmenfong.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carmen Fong, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a double board-certified general and colorectal surgeon and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation Nation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, the medication can lead to decreased fluid and fiber intake due to changes in appetite and food preferences. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another reason is delayed gastric emptying, Dr. Kaplan points out. Drink up<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kaplan recommends increasing fluid intake to soften stools and promote easier bowel movements. Penn State College of Medicine researchers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.med.psu.edu\/oncology-nutrition-exercise\/patient-guides\/constipation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommend<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drinking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of liquids per day. In addition to water, you can try prune juice, fruit juices, and herbal tea\u2014hot beverages may stimulate your colon to produce a bowel movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-eat-more-fiber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Eat more fiber<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFiber adds bulk to the stool, aiding its passage through the digestive tract,\u201d notes Dr. Kaplan. He suggests incorporating fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet to help get things moving. Increase your fiber intake <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/foods-for-constipation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gradually<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until you get up to 25 to 30 grams daily for women and 30 to 38 grams for men. Just be aware that high-fiber foods do tend to take longer to digest, which may increase upper GI symptoms such as nausea and bloating.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-get-moving\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Get moving<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular physical activity increases GI motility, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00365521.2019.1568544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relieving constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Dr. Fong. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week, such as walking, cycling, or swimming.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-try-an-otc-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Try an OTC medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If diet and exercise aren\u2019t helping, over-the-counter laxatives may help. Dr. Kaplan says that stool softeners like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/colace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work by drawing water into the stool, making it softer, and are generally safe for long-term use. You can also try osmotic laxatives such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/miralax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MiraLAX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which draw water into the colon to stimulate bowel movements and are safe for occasional use. Avoid certain foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to eating the right foods, you want to avoid the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/constipation\/concerned-about-constipation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrong ones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
