Here\u2019s what you need to know about the pros and cons of eating pineapple if you have diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-people-with-diabetes-eat-pineapple\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can people with diabetes eat pineapple?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason that pineapple tastes so sweet and delicious: It\u2019s high in natural sugars. A cup of pineapple chunks, or about 165 grams of fruit, contains about 16 grams of sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that doesn\u2019t mean you need to avoid it altogether. Eating pineapple offers numerous potential health benefits for people with diabetes, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"low-in-calories\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low in calories<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many other kinds of fruit, pineapple is relatively low in calories. One cup of raw pineapple chunks contains about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/fdc-app.html#\/food-details\/169124\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">82 calories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013and no fat or cholesterol. Additionally, tracking calories can help people with diabetes maintain better control over their blood glucose levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"rich-in-vitamins-and-minerals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rich in vitamins and minerals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pineapple is a good source of vitamins and minerals that are beneficial for people with diabetes, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Manganese:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pineapple is very high in the trace element <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Manganese-HealthProfessional\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manganese<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which your body needs for bone health, blood clotting, blood sugar regulation, and calcium absorption. That\u2019s important because fiber can help you maintain better control of your blood sugar levels. \u201cWhen you have diabetes (and even when you do not), the fiber content in fruits helps to decrease the impact of the sugar content in the fruits or how quickly the natural sugar in the fruit will raise your blood sugar level,\u201d says Margulies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutrition.org\/most-americans-are-not-getting-enough-fiber-in-our-diets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most people do not get enough fiber in their diets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and fiber helps support heart health and a healthy digestive system. One note: you need to eat the actual fruit to get the fiber benefits. According to some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15841258\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this enzyme may also help with arthritis pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"aids-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aids weight loss<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss is often recommended for people with Type 2 diabetes. Some animal-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6170270\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that pineapple may have anti-obesity properties. However, more research is needed in humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers are also continuing to look into other potential benefits of pineapple. One recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/07391102.2023.2276889\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggested that pineapple waste (peels, leaves, and stems) may actually be useful as a precursor for a new drug to help manage diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"glycemic-index-of-pineapple\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glycemic index of pineapple<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The glycemic index describes how quickly carbohydrates in foods affect blood sugar levels. It\u2019s a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 being the value assigned to pure glucose (sugar).<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High GI: 70 or higher<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medium GI: 56\u201369<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low GI: 55 or lower<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The higher the GI, the more drastically the food will raise your blood glucose levels. That\u2019s why many experts recommend eating low glycemic index fruits as a general rule. \u201cWhenever possible, it is better to select fruit that has a lower glycemic index, including fruits like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/benefits-of-blueberries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blueberries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, blackberries, or apples,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pritikin.com\/health-experts\/maria-teresa-anton-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maria Teresa Anton, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an endocrinologist and educator at the Pritikin Longevity Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The glycemic index of fresh pineapple ranges from about 51 to 66, making it a moderate GI food. Yet, \u201cit is the portion that matters and the foods you eat it with,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/tobyamidornutrition.com\/\">Amidor<\/a>. When eaten in moderation as part of a balanced diet, it can be a healthy treat for people with diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-enjoy-pineapple-if-you-have-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to enjoy pineapple if you have diabetes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have diabetes, you can enjoy pineapple and still keep your blood sugar and insulin levels from rising too sharply with the following strategies:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Eat pineapple along with a source of protein or fat. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFresh pineapple, when eaten with a protein or fat source such as yogurt, cottage cheese, or walnuts, can help manage portion control and mitigate blood sugar spikes,\u201d notes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/entirelynourished.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michelle Routhenstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator, and owner of Entirely Nourished. Amidor suggests making a pineapple, spinach, almond milk, and Greek yogurt smoothie. \u201cThe result is one fruit exchange and 23g carbs, which is a reasonable amount of carbs for one meal,\u201d Amidor says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Watch your serving size.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dr. Anton usually recommends that her patients stick to a half cup of higher GI fruits to prevent sugar spikes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Go easy on dried fruit. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can still get health benefits from eating dried pineapple, but it tends to be higher in calories (and natural sugars) than the fresh version. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) cautions that you can rack up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/food-nutrition\/reading-food-labels\/fruit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 grams of carbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from just two tablespoons of dried fruit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Read labels on canned pineapple. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pineapple may be floating in pineapple juice, but it may also be canned in syrup, which tends to be higher in calories and sugar. If you opt for canned fruit, the ADA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/food-nutrition\/reading-food-labels\/fruit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking for words on the label such as \u201cpacked in its juices,&#8221; &#8220;unsweetened,&#8221; or &#8220;no added sugar.&#8221; \u201cAvoid any syrups, even the light syrups, as they contain extra sugar,\u201d says Margulies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving a piece of fresh fruit or fruit salad for dessert is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth and get the extra nutrition you\u2019re looking for,\u201d says Amidor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you love to eat pineapple, good news: Pineapple can definitely fit into a healthy diabetes diet, including yours. You just have to think in terms of moderation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember to watch your portion sizes and make sure that you account for the fact that pineapple\u2019s natural sugar content will affect your blood glucose levels. Eating a smaller portion size, perhaps a half cup, and pairing it with a healthy fat or protein can give you all the health and taste benefits without sending your blood sugar soaring.
