They\u2019re also rich in a variety of nutrients, such as antioxidants and fiber, which are responsible for their many health benefits. Adding apples to your diet may:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-provide-disease-fighting-antioxidants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Provide disease-fighting antioxidants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apples are colorful fruits, and the pigments that give them their hue also provide antioxidant benefits. \u201cApples are high in a type of antioxidants called polyphenols,\u201d explains<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenna Volpe, RDN<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a registered dietitian and the owner of Whole-istic Living in Austin, Texas. \u201cPolyphenols are chemicals found in fruits and vegetables that scavenge free radicals, harmful substances that can cause cell damage and aging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When left unchecked, these unstable free radical molecules cause oxidative stress.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10206224\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that oxidative stress can contribute to the progression of various chronic conditions, such as heart disease and cancer. Contain gut-friendly prebiotics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fiber in apples can support gut health, which can be partially chalked up to the high levels of prebiotics in apples. Prebiotics are a type of fiber that feeds the good bacteria in your gut microbiome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cApples are a natural food source of a prebiotic soluble fiber called pectin,\u201d says Volpe. \u201cIt\u2019s fuel for probiotics, the healthy microbes that live mostly in our gut.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pectin accounts for the majority of the soluble fiber in apples and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9321083\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been linked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to some gut health benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects. The pectin in apples can increase levels of beneficial bacteria while reducing harmful bacteria in the gut.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-assist-with-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Overall, apples have been linked to weight loss in both human and animal studies,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29630462\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-help-lower-cancer-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. According to Dr. Li, this is partially explained by the high levels of ursolic acid in apples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ursolic acid is a beneficial compound found in many fruits and vegetables, including apples.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The benefits have mainly been shown in animal studies, rather than human studies, so more research needs to be done to know more about its effects. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8622438\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that ursolic acid lowers inflammation and may have preventive effects on cardiovascular diseases.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ursolic acid may also promote brain health. Some<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9817136\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have found potential neuroprotective effects of ursolic acid, which suggests it may help prevent diseases like Alzheimer\u2019s disease, but again, more research on humans is needed to determine the effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ursolic acid works by improving blood flow, Dr. Li says. This is significant because compromised blood flow is associated with several chronic diseases, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and atherosclerosis (a buildup of plaque in the arteries, which can lead to heart disease).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35766779\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red Delicious and Royal Gala apples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have the highest ursolic acid content, which increases their potential antioxidant and disease-fighting properties.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"7-rich-in-potassium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Adults need between<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/Potassium-Consumer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2,600 mg and 3,400 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of potassium per day, so one apple could account for up to almost 8% of your DV for potassium.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-support-cardiovascular-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Ibarra recommends eating a variety of foods, including various types of apples, to get an array of nutrients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How apples are prepared can also influence their potential benefits. You can snack on a raw apple, but it\u2019s also common to cook apples in recipes for oatmeal and baked goods. Similarly, apples are often turned into apple juice and apple cider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to maximize the nutrients in and benefits of apples, Volpe recommends eating them raw. \u201cRaw apples are higher in fiber, and they contain more water-soluble vitamins (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-b6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin B6<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and some minerals (such as potassium and magnesium), which may get reduced in the cooking process,\u201d she explains.
