Topiramate is safe to give to dogs. It&rsquo;s just not used very often in veterinary medicine. One reason is that it has a very short half-life in dogs, so it may not be as effective as another drug. Veterinarians usually try other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antiepileptic drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before considering topiramate.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: Sa<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/topamax\"><b>ve up to 80% on Topamax<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-topamax-used-for-in-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Topamax used for in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians use topiramate, the generic version of Topamax, to control seizures in dogs. It is only used with other anti-seizure drugs, usually after many other anti-seizure drugs have been tried and failed. There are no established guidelines for which kinds of seizures are best treated by topiramate. However, there is general agreement that it&rsquo;s a viable alternative for treating seizures that don&rsquo;t have an identifiable cause (canine idiopathic epilepsy) or seizures that are not being effectively treated by other drugs (refractory epilepsy).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"seizure-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizure disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seizures are a short-lived set of symptoms caused by excessive or simultaneous nerve overactivity in the brain. Epilepsy or seizure disorder is diagnosed when seizures happen at least twice in a six-month period. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akcchf.org\/canine-health\/top-health-concerns\/epilepsy\/understanding-canine-epilepsy.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Kennel Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that about 0.75% of dogs have epilepsy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians treat active seizures with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticonvulsants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anticonvulsants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some dogs may be put on daily anticonvulsants to prevent future seizures, called maintenance treatment. For many one-time seizures with an identifiable cause, maintenance treatment may not be necessary.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/neurology\/treatment-plans-for-routine-and-refractory-canine-epilepsy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinarian may choose to start maintenance treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on seizure frequency and severity. Veterinary guidelines call for maintenance drug therapy in a dog that has:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Had two or more seizures in a six-month period<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Had one very severe or prolonged seizure (status epilepticus)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experienced more than one seizure in a single day (cluster seizures)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing numbers of seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing lengths of seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing severity of seizures<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long recovery periods after a seizure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians rarely use brand-name human drugs like Topamax. Their price is high relative to generic or veterinary versions of the drug.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All anti-seizure medications work by slowing nerve signals and making the nervous system less excitable. Topiramate is no exception, but its mechanism of action is poorly understood. At the right serum concentrations, it slows down nerve signals in several ways such as increasing the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA at GABA receptors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topiramate is not the veterinarian&rsquo;s first choice as an anti-seizure medication. It&rsquo;s more likely to be somewhere near the last choice.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal of drug therapy is to control canine seizures by using just one drug. A veterinarian&rsquo;s first choices for seizure prevention in a dog are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenobarbital\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenobarbital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/potassium-bromide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">potassium bromide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some veterinarians may start with the anticonvulsants <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zonisamide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zonisamide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/levetiracetam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levetiracetam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, that one drug is not enough to control seizures. At that point, a veterinarian may add another anti-seizure drug to the treatment regimen. Adding drugs to a primary drug treatment is called adjunctive drug therapy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, the top choices for adjunct treatment of canine epilepsy do not include topiramate. One reason is that it&rsquo;s not as well-studied as other anticonvulsants, so veterinarians aren&rsquo;t entirely confident in the pharmacology of topiramate. Furthermore, it has very different pharmacokinetics in dogs than in humans, so it may not work as well in dogs. In people, the half-life of topiramate is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=4087eb3c-96e9-4d0a-b80b-663e1c86d256\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In dogs, the half-life of topiramate is two to four hours. That&rsquo;s so short a time that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vin.com\/apputil\/content\/defaultadv1.aspx?pId=11268&amp;id=3866651\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it&rsquo;s difficult to get topiramate plasma concentrations to a steady state even with doses given three times daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The other downside is its twice-daily dosing. It&rsquo;s easy to miss or forget doses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-topamax-safe-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Topamax safe for dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topamax and its generic version, topiramate, are safe for dogs. The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal issues, loss of appetite, sedation, and irritability.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topiramate is not safe for every dog. Dogs that have had an allergic reaction to topiramate should not be given topiramate. Veterinarians may be cautious about giving topiramate to a dog with kidney or hepatic dysfunction. In those cases, they may use a low dose to prevent side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects-of-topamax-in-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of Topamax in dogs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects of topiramate in dogs are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal distress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coordination problems (ataxia)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In dogs, the most serious side effects of topiramate are severe allergic reactions, though these are rare. Immediately contact a veterinarian or veterinary hospital if a dog taking topiramate experiences <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/topiramate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms such as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling around the face or mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin rash<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, there isn&rsquo;t much documentation in veterinary medicine about topiramate&rsquo;s serious side effects in dogs. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=4087eb3c-96e9-4d0a-b80b-663e1c86d256\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In human clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some participants experienced serious side effects such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic acidosis<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurological problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney stones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pancreas inflammation (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"interactions-of-topamax-with-other-pet-meds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interactions of Topamax with other pet meds<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In people, topiramate has some drug interactions that may cause problems. Veterinarians don&rsquo;t know if dogs have the same problems, but they assume topiramate can cause problems with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drugs that make a dog sleepy like narcotic pain relievers or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/benzodiazepines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepines<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The anti-seizure drugs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenytoin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phenytoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lamotrigine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lamotrigine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/valproic-acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">valproic acid<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/glaucoma-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaucoma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatments called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/carbonic-anhydrase-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbonic anhydrase inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"topamax-dosage-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topamax dosage for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard topiramate dosage for dogs is 5&ndash;10 milligrams per kilogram of body weight given twice daily. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/todaysveterinarypractice.com\/neurology\/treatment-plans-for-routine-and-refractory-canine-epilepsy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today&rsquo;s Veterinary Practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends a dosage of 5&ndash;10 mg\/kg given two to three times daily. Plumb&rsquo;s Veterinary Drug Manual includes a recommended dose of 2.5&ndash;5 mg\/kg given three times per day as an alternative.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At these dosages, it is possible to give human versions of topiramate to a dog. Topamax and generic topiramate are sold as capsules and tablets at dosage strengths <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=21628112-0c47-11df-95b3-498d55d89593\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as low as 15 mg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to as high as 200 mg.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The veterinarian may prescribe a veterinary formulation of topiramate tablets, which come in dosage strengths ranging from 15 mg to 100 mg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People can take an extended-release version of topiramate that requires <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=b94629e3-ae2e-473e-b2f5-06e32ee19aa9\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only a single dose daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the veterinary literature does not specify dosages for small animals. People can also take a liquid formulation of topiramate (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eprontia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eprontia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), but cost may be an issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-dogs-overdose-on-topamax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can dogs overdose on Topamax?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs can overdose on Topamax or its generic version, topiramate. Although topiramate is not often used in dogs, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) records over a hundred reports of topiramate exposure every year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a dog is given too much topiramate or ingests a person&rsquo;s prescription topiramate, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center or a veterinarian. The most common clinical signs of a topiramate overdose in people are sedation, low energy, lethargy, blurred vision, loss of coordination, stupor, abdominal pain, and agitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In dogs, the highest recommended dose is 10 mg\/kg given three times per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-i-give-my-dog-topamax-every-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I give my dog Topamax every day?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topiramate is a long-term treatment to prevent canine seizures. Regular daily doses are considered safe in dogs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-to-give-your-dog-topamax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to give your dog Topamax<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To work, topiramate must be given to a dog twice daily:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Follow all the instructions given by the veterinarian.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not give more than prescribed or give topiramate more often than prescribed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topiramate tablets and capsules can be given to a dog with or without food.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&rsquo;s safer to handle topiramate tablets while wearing nonpermeable gloves.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you do not know how to give a tablet or capsule to a dog, have a veterinary professional show you the best procedure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Give a missed dose when remembered unless it&rsquo;s almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and give the next dose as scheduled. Do not give two doses to make up for a missed dose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The veterinarian will require follow-up visits and lab tests to monitor the effectiveness of treatment. Please keep all appointments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep topiramate tablets or capsules securely out of the reach of children and other people.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"topamax-alternatives-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topamax alternatives for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians only use topiramate as an add-on drug in dogs when other anti-seizure drugs aren&rsquo;t successful.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For refractory seizures&mdash;those that can&rsquo;t be controlled with monotherapy&mdash;a veterinarian has a long list of possible drugs to choose from, including topiramate.
