Although Ozempic and other glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) have proven benefits, some adverse effects have come to attention\u2014some of which can be severe. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10874596\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse condition linked to Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is gastroparesis, which happens when the stomach struggles to empty its contents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-gastroparesis-why-it-happens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic gastroparesis: Why it happens<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK551528\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroparesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a functional problem of the stomach. It happens when the stomach, a muscle, cannot contract enough to move food along to the small intestine normally. There is no blockage to blame; the stomach just doesn\u2019t churn as it should.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic stimulates GLP-1 receptors, which play a role in the movement of food from the stomach. Although this may explain the association between Ozempic and gastroparesis, no one is exactly sure of the mechanism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delayed gastric emptying is one way in which Ozempic reduces appetite. This partly explains why it may be prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for weight loss, even though it isn\u2019t approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for that indication. Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic, sells a separate drug that\u2019s FDA approved for weight loss:\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has the same active ingredient as Ozempic (semaglutide) but is specifically FDA approved for weight loss. In contrast, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/ozempic.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is approved for managing Type 2 diabetes and reducing the risk of cardiovascular events in people with diabetes and known heart disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><b>Wegovy vs. Ozempic<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When stomach emptying goes from simply slower to a problematic state, it is termed gastroparesis. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2810542\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study published in JAMA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people taking GLP-1 agonists had more than three times the incidence of gastroparesis than those taking an alternative obesity drug, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/contrave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (bupropion-naltrexone). And a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10891568\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large analysis of the issue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that 5.1% of people experience gastroparesis on GLP-1 agonists.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-symptoms-of-gastroparesis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the symptoms of gastroparesis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of gastroparesis can range from subtle to profound. On the mild end of the symptom spectrum, people may experience nausea, bloating, reduced appetite, and early satiety (feeling full sooner). More severe symptoms can involve vomiting, stomach pain, and malnutrition or dehydration from too little intake. The condition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9891341\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can even lead to a bezoar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a ball of undigested, retained food material in the stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep in mind that abdominal pain during Ozempic treatment can be from other serious gastrointestinal issues besides gastroparesis. The drug has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=adec4fd2-6858-4c99-91d4-531f5f2a2d79\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked to pancreatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dangerous inflammatory condition of the pancreas, and it has been associated with gallbladder attacks. It is helpful to know these potential risks before starting Ozempic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another hazard posed by gastroparesis is related to surgical procedures. To reduce the risk of aspirating or breathing in regurgitated stomach contents, patients undergoing surgery routinely fast for a period of time to make sure their stomachs are empty. But if they have gastroparesis, their stomach may still be full even after an overnight fast. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asahq.org\/about-asa\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2023\/06\/patients-taking-popular-medications-for-diabetes-and-weight-loss-should-stop-before-elective-surgery\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Society of Anesthesiologists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has advised that GLP-1 agonists, including Ozempic, be stopped for a week in advance of surgery to reduce this risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-else-can-cause-gastroparesis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What else can cause gastroparesis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastroparesis does not just come from Ozempic. Other GLP-1 drugs could be associated with the issue, too. The drug class also includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trulicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dulaglutide)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/victoza\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Victoza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (liraglutide)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (liraglutide),<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (tirzepatide)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (oral semaglutide). The condition can even come from other medicine types, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/proton-pump-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proton pump inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for acid reflux and Parkinson&#8217;s disease medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides medications, some health conditions can cause gastroparesis, including diabetes mellitus. If diabetic gastroparesis is present, Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonists may not be a good choice, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7428659\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to a 2020 review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a different diabetes medication is needed, options include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/biguanides\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biguanides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT-2 inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). These are not associated with gastroparesis. If cost is a factor in switching medication, particularly when it comes to the GLP-1 agonists or SGLT-2 inhibitors, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare discount card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help you save.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-ozempic-cause-permanent-gastroparesis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can Ozempic cause permanent gastroparesis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media reports have come out about prolonged gastroparesis even after stopping the drug, but further investigation is needed to determine how long the problem can last.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, once someone stops taking Ozempic, gastric emptying will slowly improve over the following four to five weeks as the drug is eliminated from the system. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8529310\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Published case reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> illustrate this more common scenario. An association between GLP-1 agonists and permanent gastroparesis has not been determined. Additional studies are needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-do-if-you-develop-gastroparesis-on-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if you develop gastroparesis on Ozempic<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are having any side effects from Ozempic, including any that might be coming from gastroparesis, you should talk to your healthcare provider immediately. They may recommend reducing or stopping the medication, or they may recommend a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/gastric-emptying-study\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastric emptying study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to evaluate the symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A review on the topic of gastrointestinal side effects with GLP-1 agonists provides some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9821052\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helpful gastroparesis prevention tips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
