Mounjaro is a prescription <\/span>GLP-1<\/span> medication used to regulate and improve <\/span>glucose<\/span> levels in people with <\/span>Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a>. However, GLP-1 receptor agonists like Mounjaro also lead to weight loss. This may sound familiar to those who have sought out a prescription for <\/span>Ozempic<\/span><\/a> (<\/span>semaglutide<\/span>), which has become trendy for <\/span>weight loss<\/span> in recent years. <\/span>Ozempic<\/span>, like <\/span>Mounjaro<\/span>, is a <\/span>GLP-1 agonist<\/span> that aims to lower <\/span>blood sugar<\/span>. It is not <\/span>FDA-approved<\/span> as a <\/span>weight loss medication<\/span> despite often being used as such <\/span>off-label<\/span> due to showing efficacy in <\/span>clinical trials<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>David Nazarian, MD<\/span><\/a>, a <\/span>weight loss<\/span> specialist at <\/span>My Concierge MD<\/span><\/a> in Los Angeles, California, this increase in <\/span>weight loss<\/span> speed is due to the two drugs using different pathways to suppress your appetite. \u201cIf someone is not having the desired appetite suppression from <\/span>Mounjaro<\/span> at higher dosages, <\/span>phentermine<\/span> can be added as a second <\/span>weight loss medication<\/span>,\u201d he says. \u201cI have had a few patients that this was the case for, and the two [drugs] in combination had a higher appetite suppression.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

While it is possible to safely combine <\/span>phentermine<\/span> and <\/span>Mounjaro<\/span>, it is not recommended as the combination increases the risk of side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, Dr. Nazarian says that taking the two together can be dangerous in terms of weight loss. \u201cThere is more of a risk of dehydration and a decrease [of] protein and caloric intake in general,\u201d he says. As <\/span>phentermine<\/span> and <\/span>Mounjaro<\/span> work as appetite suppressants, you may consume even less food and water when taking both, which can be risky to your nutrition and cause <\/span>gastrointestinal<\/span> symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n
