These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultra-rapid-acting insulin: Fiasp (insulin aspart)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid-acting insulin: NovoLog (insulin aspart), Humalog (insulin lispro)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-acting insulin: Humulin R (insulin regular)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intermediate-acting insulin: Humulin N (human insulin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-acting insulin: Lantus (insulin glargine)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insulins are considered rapid- or fast-acting if the insulin reaches its highest level of effectiveness shortly after it\u2019s taken, Emeghara says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you eat food, glucose (the body\u2019s fuel source) enters your bloodstream. Your pancreas then makes insulin, which helps move glucose from the bloodstream into other parts of your body, like muscle, fat, and liver cells. This process creates energy for the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a person with diabetes mellitus has trouble moving glucose from the bloodstream to other areas of the body, and too much glucose remains in their bloodstream. Rapid-acting insulins work quickly to help the body process the glucose from the food a person eats, preventing spikes in blood sugar that can happen after mealtime, Dr. Emeghara says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NovoLog has an ultra-rapid counterpart called Fiasp. While this medication has the same active ingredient, insulin aspart, Fiasp is formulated with a form of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/true-vitamin-b3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin B3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (niacinamide), which speeds up how fast the body absorbs the Fiasp insulin dose. \u201cFiasp has an onset of action of about five minutes,\u201d Dr. Emeghara says. \u201cIt peaks in about one to two hours after injection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\t\t<div class=\"singlecare-dynamic-newsletter-wrapper sin-newsletter-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"heading\">Get our diabetes newsletter<\/span>\n\t\t\t<form class=\"form-wrapper\" data-newsletter-form=\"1\" data-subsource=\"Diabetes Newsletter\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<label for=\"dynamic-email\">Email<\/label>\n\t\t\t\t\t<input type=\"email\" id=\"dynamic-email\" class=\"email\" required>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"input-wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<input class=\"submit-form-btn\" type=\"submit\" value=\"Click to sign up\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/form>\n\t\t\t<p class=\"success-message\" aria-live=\"polite\"><\/p>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-can-affect-how-long-it-takes-to-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can affect how long it takes to work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several factors can impact how long it takes for NovoLog to work, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blood supply at the injection site: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Emeghara says vigorously rubbing or massaging the injection site can increase blood supply and speed absorption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exercise:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Strenuous exercise within an hour of injection can also speed insulin absorption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Injection site location: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe area where you inject it matters,\u201d Dr. Dasgupta says. \u201cDifferent spots on your body absorb it at different rates.\u201d In general, it\u2019s best not to inject NovoLog into muscle. \u201cThis is because an injection into the muscle can cause insulin to work too quickly,\u201d Dr. Dasgupta explains. \u201cIt is important to inject into areas of skin with subcutaneous tissue, such as the abdomen and thighs.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lipodystrophy (abnormal fat distribution in the body): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have been diagnosed with lipodystrophy, avoid any areas of the body that have abnormal fat distributions, Dr. Emeghara says. Injecting in these areas delays absorption.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Body temperature: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA hot bath, shower, or sauna can increase absorption rate as well,\u201d Dr. Emghara explains. That\u2019s because warmth makes your blood vessels dilate, which speeds up the rate at which you process insulin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dosage:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Larger doses of NovoLog can take your body longer to absorb and lower blood sugar levels, Dr. Emeghara says. This is because it takes more time to absorb the higher volumes of insulin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these factors can impact how quickly NovoLog works, Dr. Emeghara says she does not recommend taking any action to make the insulin \u201ckick in faster.\u201d Instead, you should follow your prescribed treatment plan as your healthcare provider directed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-standard-novolog-dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the standard NovoLog dosage?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe manufacturer (Novo Nordisk) has not recommended a specific dosage of NovoLog because your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/novolog\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NovoLog dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will depend on several factors, and everyone\u2019s needs are different,\u201d Dr. Dasgupta says. \u201cIt\u2019s important to monitor your blood sugar, adjust your dose accordingly, and always speak with your doctor if you have any questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NovoLog is available in different package sizes. Each contains 100 units of insulin aspart per mL (U-100), according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2015\/020986s082lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NovoLog injection label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 mL vials<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 mL PenFill cartridges for the 3 mL PenFill cartridge delivery device (with or without the addition of a NovoPen 3 PenMate\u00ae) with NovoFine\u00ae disposable needles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 mL NovoLog FlexPen<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3 mL NovoLog FlexTouch<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One unit of NovoLog can lower blood sugar by about 30 to 50 mg\/dL, though this can vary from person to person. \u201cYou can use NovoLog multiple times a day, usually right before mealtime, to keep your blood sugar in check,\u201d Dr. Dasgupta says. NovoLog is also approved for use in insulin pumps in children ages 2 and older with Type 1 diabetes or in adults with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-avoid-taking-novolog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should avoid taking NovoLog?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Emeghara says anyone who has an allergy to NovoLog or its ingredients should avoid taking the medication. Similarly, anyone experiencing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hypoglycemia-without-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (low blood sugar) should not take NovoLog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should avoid taking NovoLog if you plan to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the drug impacts you<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drink alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines that contain alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before taking NovoLog, it\u2019s important to seek medical advice from a healthcare professional if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. You should also discuss any prescriptions, herbal supplements, over-the-counter medications, or vitamins you currently take. NovoLog can interact with other drugs.
