While there is no cure for eczema, there are ways to help relieve symptoms or prevent flare-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eczema treatment includes lifestyle changes, over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, and prescription medications. Pharmacists can help patients manage their condition by discussing helpful lifestyle changes, recommending suitable OTC products, and educating patients on proper medication use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on to learn more about how pharmacists can support patients with eczema.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-eczema\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is eczema?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niams.nih.gov\/health-topics\/atopic-dermatitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eczema<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a disease characterized by skin inflammation, redness, and irritation. It can cause extreme itchiness, and when the skin is scratched, it can lead to redness, swelling, cracking, and scaling. The cause of eczema is unclear, but according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, genes, the immune system, and the environment are thought to be involved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While eczema usually develops in early childhood, it can occur at any age. In many cases, eczema is a chronic (long-term) condition that causes flare-ups throughout life. At this time, there is no cure for eczema, and treatment is focused on relieving symptoms and preventing flare-ups.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"nonpharmacologic-management-of-eczema\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonpharmacologic management of eczema<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the severity of eczema, pharmacists can recommend lifestyle changes to assist patients in managing their condition. These include identifying eczema triggers and implementing an effective moisturizing and bathing routine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"avoiding-eczema-triggers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding eczema triggers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eczema symptoms start or flare up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9998-eczema\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an environmental trigger. Pharmacists can help patients identify these triggers and develop strategies to avoid them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the National Eczema Society, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eczema.org\/information-and-advice\/triggers-for-eczema\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there is minimal evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirming which triggers produce flares. However, there are several possible culprits. Some of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationaleczema.org\/eczema\/causes-and-triggers-of-eczema\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> eczema triggers in adults include:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dry skin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the skin is dry, it becomes brittle, scaly, and tight. This can lead to an eczema flare-up. Due to this risk, it\u2019s important to encourage patients to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationaleczema.org\/eczema\/treatment\/moisturizing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep their skin moisturized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as moisturizers and lotions protect the top layer of the skin and reduce the risk of flare-ups.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Irritants: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Household products and natural substances can irritate the skin and cause burning, itchiness, dryness, and redness. These irritants may be included in products applied to the body or used in the home. Examples include shampoo, body wash, perfume, surface cleaners, laundry detergent, and hand soap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Stress: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eczema.org\/information-and-advice\/triggers-for-eczema\/stress-and-eczema\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the biggest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> triggers of eczema flare-ups as it contributes to inflammation and interferes with the skin\u2019s ability to repair. As a pharmacist, you can discuss stress management techniques with patients, such as exercise, deep breathing, meditation, yoga, and adequate sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eczema is common in young children and babies as well. According to the National Eczema Association, eczema typically occurs in this age group because the child\u2019s sensitive skin comes in contact with an irritant. Examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain ointments or baby lotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food allergies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry air<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain soaps or shampoos<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products with fragrances<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"moisturizing-and-bathing-routine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moisturizing and bathing routine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining moisture in the skin is a crucial part of eczema care. As a pharmacist, you can help patients understand how and when to moisturize and which moisturizers are best to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.annallergy.org\/article\/S1081-1206(23)01455-2\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annals of Allergy, Asthma &amp; Immunology,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fragrance-free, over-the-counter moisturizers are preferred over prescription moisturizers. Liberal, daily application is an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2020\/0515\/p590.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">essential part<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of preventing eczema flare-ups. Some other counseling points regarding moisturizers include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationaleczema.org\/eczema\/treatment\/moisturizing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advising patients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply any prescription topical medications as directed before applying moisturizer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apply a thick layer of moisturizer all over the skin within three minutes of bathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use fragrance-free and dye-free moisturizers because they are the safest and the least irritating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moisturize their hands every time they are washed or after they come in contact with water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can help patients choose a moisturizer with ingredients that help eczema-prone skin. According to the National Eczema Association, these include moisturizers with:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oat or shea butter<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aloe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glycerin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyaluronic acid<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Petrolatum<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humectants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niacinamide<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the American Family Physician, pharmacists should encourage once-daily bathing for 5 to 10 minutes with lukewarm water. If one of the following options is recommended, pharmacists can explain its purpose, directions for use, and potential risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people with eczema experience extreme itchiness. Oral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may provide <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relief through<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sedative effects. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drowsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dry mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blurry vision<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While oral antihistamines can provide eczema relief, topical antihistamines aren\u2019t recommended because there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaad.org\/article\/S0190-9622(14)01257-2\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> supporting their effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pain-relievers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain relievers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eczema symptoms may also include burning, pain, and inflammation. In these cases, pharmacists may recommend an OTC pain reliever, such as a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol (acetaminophen)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Keep in mind that each of these medications comes with its own risks. For example, Tylenol can cause serious liver damage. Therefore, adult patients should be advised not to take more than 4,000 mg of Tylenol per day.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hydrocortisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydrocortisone<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/hydrocortisone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hydrocortisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a corticosteroid <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nctr-crs.fda.gov\/fdalabel\/services\/spl\/set-ids\/070000d7-7d4d-439b-9a91-851ba7c027e6\/spl-doc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">used for<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> skin inflammation, irritation, and itchiness. Pharmacists may recommend OTC versions of hydrocortisone for mild cases of eczema. The drug may be applied to the affected area <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nationaleczema.org\/eczema\/treatment\/over-the-counter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one to four times per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on the particular product used. Patients should be advised to follow the instructions on the label carefully, and the product should not be used for longer than recommended on the drug facts label or by the patient\u2019s healthcare provider. Children younger than 2 should consult a medical professional before use.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-prescription-treatments-for-eczema\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common prescription treatments for eczema<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, OTC drugs may not be able to manage eczema symptoms. Fortunately, an unprecedented number of prescription medications, including topicals, biologics, and oral medications, are available for the treatment of eczema.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"topical-drugs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical drugs<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common types of prescription topical drugs include corticosteroids, janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, calcineurin inhibitors, and PDE-4 inhibitors. Each of these may work differently to relieve eczema, have slightly different application instructions, and come with their risks. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eczema.org\/information-and-advice\/treatments-for-eczema\/topical-corticosteroids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">topical steroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are typically used for 7 to 14 days, and they may only need to be applied once a day. This helps improve inflammation. According to the National Eczema Association, these include immunosuppressants, JAK inhibitors, and corticosteroids.
