It is available for adults and children and is taken once every 24 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-zyrtec-twice-a-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> twice a day?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more than once in 24 hours is not recommended without talking to a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider first. \u201cI do not recommend higher doses without being examined by a physician and having appropriate evaluation and discussion about the medication,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wexnermedical.osu.edu\/find-a-doctor\/tiffany-owens-md-66140\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiffany Owens, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an allergist and immunologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a healthcare provider or pharmacist may prescribe a two-a-day dosage for people with certain conditions. \u201cTwice daily <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be recommended for severe symptoms associated with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and swelling under the skin,\u201d adds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uthsc.edu\/faculty\/profile\/?netid=lhentric\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke Hentrich, Pharm.D., BCPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor who answered the questions in conjunction with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hannah-suber\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannah Suber, a Pharm.D. candidate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both at the University of Tennessee\u2019s Health Science Center College of Pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21810005\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Journal of Dermatological Treatment<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a double dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetirizine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Zyrtec,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is effective for patients with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urticaria <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While higher doses of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be recommended in some situations, Dr. Owens continues to explain it\u2019s considered \u201coff-label,\u201d which means doing so isn\u2019t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-approved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> twice daily is unlikely to cause harm, it may intensify <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and eyes, constipation, headache, and insomnia,\u201d Dr. Hentrich says. Dr. Hentrich adds an increased risk of fatigue, muscle weakness, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleepiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dry eyes, excessive thirst, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even scarier, too much <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within a certain period can lead to an overdose. Dr. Hentrich says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the overuse of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include delusions, agitation, and altered mental status, among other symptoms. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1357303915003199\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which usually develop within six hours of overdose, include tachycardia (fast heart rate), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dry mouth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problems, agitation, psychosis, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that some populations are at a higher risk of these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Namely, patients with kidney or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since their bodies may not be able to metabolize higher doses, according to Dr. Owens. Similarly, Dr. Hentrich says patients with impaired kidney or liver function may need lower doses of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also want to be cautious. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can decrease breast milk supply; thus, I advise that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be well-established before starting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetirizine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> person,\u201d Dr. Owens recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, when a breastfeeding parent takes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can be transmitted to the baby through the milk, which isn\u2019t without some concern. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and irritability have been reported in breastfed infants,\u201d Dr. Hentrich says. \u201cThe risks and benefits should be considered in collaboration with your provider before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the setting of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"healthcare-professional-advice-on-handling-severe-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare professional<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advice on handling severe allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe allergies can cause serious issues, such as anaphylaxis, but certain allergens can be hard to avoid. \u201cNon-pharmacologic treatment with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> avoidance (i.e., pollen, pet dander) is encouraged, but not always practical,\u201d Dr. Hentrich validates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He says current treatment recommendations for allergies include intranasal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/corticosteroids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a type of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">steroid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), oral <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and oral <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decongestants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec-D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that can be purchased <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over the counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese aid in most symptoms associated with allergic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rhinitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including congestion, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">runny nose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sneezing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and nasal itching,\u201d he explains. \u201cOf note, intranasal corticosteroids, such as Flonase, have shown the most benefit in treating persistent, year-round allergies.\u201d This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nasal spray<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can provide <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy relief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by blocking the body\u2019s production of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if you take different <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy medicines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? They can look at each patient\u2019s specific case and assess how to treat it without interfering with other medications or health conditions the patient might have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hentrich gives an example. \u201cIt\u2019s important to identify allergic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rhinitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> versus non-allergic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rhinitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as anti-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will not benefit all patients,\u201d he says. \u201cAlways consult with your healthcare provider to aid in diagnosis and identification of symptoms to ultimately recommend appropriate treatment options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He adds that allergy treatments often have many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can harm patients and may even have significant drug and disease interactions. \u201cPatient-specific risks and benefits should be considered with the help of a physician or pharmacist before beginning medication treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Zyrtec is an over-the-counter (OTC) antihistamine that relieves hay fever or allergy symptoms, such as runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, and itchy eyes.
