Zyrtec<\/span><\/a> is an <\/span>over-the-counter<\/span> (<\/span>OTC<\/span>) <\/span>antihistamine<\/span><\/a> that relieves <\/span>hay fever<\/span> or <\/span>allergy symptoms<\/span>, such as <\/span>runny nose<\/span>, <\/span>sneezing<\/span>, <\/span>watery eyes<\/span>, and <\/span>itchy eyes<\/span>. <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> can be taken as a tablet, <\/span>chewable<\/span> tablet, orally disintegrating tablet, capsule, or syrup. It is available for adults and children and is taken once every 24 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

Can you take <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> twice a day?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Taking <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> more than once in 24 hours is not recommended without talking to a <\/span>healthcare<\/span> provider first. \u201cI do not recommend higher doses without being examined by a physician and having appropriate evaluation and discussion about the medication,\u201d says <\/span>Tiffany Owens, MD<\/span><\/a>, an allergist and immunologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, a healthcare provider or pharmacist may prescribe a two-a-day dosage for people with certain conditions. \u201cTwice daily <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> may be recommended for severe symptoms associated with <\/span>hives<\/span> and swelling under the skin,\u201d adds <\/span>Luke Hentrich, Pharm.D., BCPS<\/span><\/a>, an assistant professor who answered the questions in conjunction with <\/span>Hannah Suber, a Pharm.D. candidate<\/span><\/a>, both at the University of Tennessee\u2019s Health Science Center College of Pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>a study in <\/span>The Journal of Dermatological Treatment<\/span><\/i><\/a>, a double dose of <\/span>cetirizine hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Zyrtec,<\/span> is effective for patients with <\/span>urticaria <\/span>(<\/span>hives<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n

While higher doses of <\/span>antihistamines<\/span> may be recommended in some situations, Dr. Owens continues to explain it\u2019s considered \u201coff-label,\u201d which means doing so isn\u2019t <\/span>FDA<\/span>-approved.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhile taking <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> twice daily is unlikely to cause harm, it may intensify <\/span>side effects<\/span>, such as <\/span>drowsiness<\/span>, <\/span>dry mouth<\/span> and eyes, constipation, headache, and insomnia,\u201d Dr. Hentrich says. He agrees that talking to a healthcare provider or pharmacist beforehand is important.<\/span><\/p>\n

Risks of exceeding the standard <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> dosage<\/span><\/h2>\n

As an <\/span>antihistamine<\/span>, <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> can cause <\/span>common <\/span>side effects<\/span><\/a>, such as headache, <\/span>sore throat<\/span>, abdominal pain, tiredness, cough, and <\/span>allergic reactions<\/span> (though <\/span>serious side effects<\/span> are rare). The maximum <\/span>dosage of <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span><\/a> for adults is 10 mg a day, and taking a higher dosage may strengthen or increase those <\/span>side effects<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn particular, high doses of <\/span>antihistamine<\/span> can cause increased <\/span>sedation<\/span>, <\/span>dry mouth<\/span>, or urinary retention,\u201d Dr. Owens says. Dr. Hentrich adds an increased risk of fatigue, muscle weakness, <\/span>sleepiness<\/span> or <\/span>sedation<\/span>, dry eyes, excessive thirst, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even scarier, too much <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> within a certain period can lead to an overdose. Dr. Hentrich says <\/span>side effects<\/span> from the overuse of <\/span>antihistamines<\/span> include delusions, agitation, and altered mental status, among other symptoms. <\/span>Signs of <\/span>antihistamine<\/span> poisoning<\/span><\/a>, which usually develop within six hours of overdose, include tachycardia (fast heart rate), <\/span>dry mouth<\/span>, <\/span>blood pressure<\/span> problems, agitation, psychosis, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to note that some populations are at a higher risk of these <\/span>side effects<\/span>. Namely, patients with kidney or <\/span>liver disease<\/span> since their bodies may not be able to metabolize higher doses, according to Dr. Owens. Similarly, Dr. Hentrich says patients with impaired kidney or liver function may need lower doses of <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

People who are <\/span>breastfeeding<\/span> may also want to be cautious. \u201c<\/span>Antihistamines<\/span> can decrease breast milk supply; thus, I advise that <\/span>breastfeeding<\/span> be well-established before starting <\/span>cetirizine<\/span> in a <\/span>breastfeeding<\/span> person,\u201d Dr. Owens recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, when a breastfeeding parent takes <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span>, it can be transmitted to the baby through the milk, which isn\u2019t without some concern. \u201c<\/span>Drowsiness<\/span> and irritability have been reported in breastfed infants,\u201d Dr. Hentrich says. \u201cThe risks and benefits should be considered in collaboration with your provider before <\/span>breastfeeding<\/span> in the setting of <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> use.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Healthcare professional<\/span> advice on handling severe allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n

Severe allergies can cause serious issues, such as anaphylaxis, but certain allergens can be hard to avoid. \u201cNon-pharmacologic treatment with <\/span>allergen<\/span> avoidance (i.e., pollen, pet dander) is encouraged, but not always practical,\u201d Dr. Hentrich validates.<\/span><\/p>\n

He says current treatment recommendations for allergies include intranasal <\/span>corticosteroids<\/span><\/a> (a type of <\/span>steroid<\/span>), oral <\/span>antihistamines<\/span>, and oral <\/span>decongestants<\/span>, including <\/span>Zyrtec-D<\/span>, that can be purchased <\/span>over the counter<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThese aid in most symptoms associated with allergic <\/span>rhinitis<\/span>, including congestion, <\/span>runny nose<\/span>, <\/span>sneezing<\/span>, and nasal itching,\u201d he explains. \u201cOf note, intranasal corticosteroids, such as Flonase, have shown the most benefit in treating persistent, year-round allergies.\u201d This <\/span>nasal spray<\/span> can provide <\/span>allergy relief<\/span><\/a> by blocking the body\u2019s production of <\/span>histamines<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What if you take different <\/span>allergy medicines<\/span>? Can you double up then, and will doing so speed up the symptom-relief process? For example, <\/span>can you safely take <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> and <\/span>Claritin<\/span><\/a> 12 hours apart?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In short, it depends. Generally, since these two medications are in the same class, it is not recommended to take them together in a 24-hour period. If you\u2019re switching from one <\/span>allergy medication<\/span> to the other, wait 24 hours after a <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> or 12 to 24 hours after a <\/span>Claritin<\/span>, depending on the dosage you consumed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a more natural <\/span>allergy treatment<\/span><\/a>, vitamins and <\/span>supplements<\/span> such as vitamin C, apple cider vinegar, quercetin, and more may boost the immune system and reduce allergy-related inflammation\u2014but the evidence supporting these options isn\u2019t as straightforward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n

Taking <\/span>Zyrtec<\/span> twice in 24 hours is usually not recommended, though a <\/span>healthcare<\/span> provider may prescribe it for particular conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t make any new changes to the recommended dose without talking to a healthcare professional. \u201cIt is highly important that the patient\u2019s medical history and <\/span>healthcare<\/span> concerns are carefully reviewed and that appropriate testing is done, when necessary,\u201d Dr. Owens says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this case, she adds that an allergist can review symptoms and formulate an individualized treatment plan in collaboration with the patient. They can look at each patient\u2019s specific case and assess how to treat it without interfering with other medications or health conditions the patient might have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Hentrich gives an example. \u201cIt\u2019s important to identify allergic <\/span>rhinitis<\/span> versus non-allergic <\/span>rhinitis<\/span>, as anti-<\/span>allergy medications<\/span> will not benefit all patients,\u201d he says. \u201cAlways consult with your healthcare provider to aid in diagnosis and identification of symptoms to ultimately recommend appropriate treatment options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds that allergy treatments often have many <\/span>side effects<\/span> that can harm patients and may even have significant drug and disease interactions. \u201cPatient-specific risks and benefits should be considered with the help of a physician or pharmacist before beginning medication treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
