It is part of a class of medications called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 receptor agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which help control blood glucose, reduce the risk of heart disease, and encourage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by suppressing appetite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When taken as prescribed, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered a safe, effective treatment for Type 2 diabetes. It is especially helpful for people with Type 2 diabetes who want to lose weight. In fact, its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> side effect is why it has become so popularly prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for weight loss. It does cause some unwanted side effects, though\u2014most notably gastrointestinal discomfort, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nausea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/chronic-diarrhea-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diarrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/constipation-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There have also been anecdotal reports of insomnia as a side effect, although the drug\u2019s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, does not list it as a known adverse effect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep reading to find out why you might be experiencing insomnia while on Ozempic and what to do about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ozempic-cause-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Ozempic cause insomnia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no scientific evidence that Ozempic causes insomnia. While some people do experience sleeplessness while on Ozempic, \u201cmany patients have also reported an improved sleep quality on semaglutide,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healor.com\/provider\/raj-singhmd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Singh, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a primary care provider at HEALOR and medical director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rarev.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAREV Medical Spa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Las Vegas, Nevada.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There has not been much research on whether Ozempic causes insomnia because it is not a commonly reported problem. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK601688\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a weight loss drug with the same active ingredient, semaglutide, found that insomnia rates were roughly the same in semaglutide groups versus placebo groups. This finding suggests that semaglutide does not cause insomnia, since the inactive placebo treatment group had the same experience with sleep.\\<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, rumors about \u2018Ozempic insomnia\u2019 have circulated on social media channels like TikTok, Facebook, and Reddit. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10669484\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of social media users\u2019 perceptions of GLP-1 inhibitors found that out of 12,136 Reddit comments, 14,515 YouTube videos, and 17,059 TikTok videos about GLP-1 medications (including Ozempic), 5% included the word \u201cinsomnia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis does not qualify as a rigorously randomized controlled trial (RCT),\u201d emphasizes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/harborhealth.com\/providers\/jodie-pepin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie Pepin, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, clinical pharmacy program director at Harbor Health. In other words, it\u2019s not airtight research. The percentage of comments mentioning insomnia in relation to Ozempic is also not unusually high. Up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sleep-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40% of Americans experience insomnia symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at some point each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, some people get good sleep on Ozempic, and some people don\u2019t. It is still unclear whether Ozempic causes an increased risk or incidence of insomnia. \u201cI am not ruling out a link or an indirect link between semaglutide and insomnia. Further investigation and strong clinical evidence should be part of this, not social media posts,\u201d Dr. Pepin says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-ozempic-cause-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does Ozempic cause insomnia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia does not seem to be a direct effect of Ozempic, but that doesn\u2019t mean someone on Ozempic can\u2019t have insomnia. There are many reasons people have trouble sleeping. Perhaps the most probable cause is having the health condition Ozempic is designed to treat: Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInsomnia is common in patients who have diabetes,\u201d Dr. Singh says. However, he says that as Ozempic starts to improve insulin resistance, sleep quality should also improve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFood, alcohol, and other drugs that might interact with semaglutide can also add to sleeping difficulties,\u201d Dr. Pepin says. She says the gastrointestinal side effects of Ozempic might keep people up at night as well, whether it\u2019s nausea after eating, or heartburn or diarrhea throughout the evening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there are the hidden changes: hormones, brain chemicals, and blood sugar levels. Dr Pepin says sleep quality may be affected while your body adjusts to the changes in cortisol levels and metabolism. Finally, she says that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a side effect of Ozempic, \u201ccan cause sweating, shaking, and anxiety, all of which negatively influence sleep quality.\u201d Hypoglycemia with Ozempic is typically only seen when it is used in conjunction with other diabetes medications, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/insulins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Singh also points to limited research suggesting that semaglutide might increase levels of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insight.jci.org\/articles\/view\/170671\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3026477\/#:~:text=Acetylcholine%20release%20in%20the%20basal,and%20lowest%20during%20NREM%20sleep.&amp;amp;text=Cortical%20acetylcholine%20release%20is%20increased,as%20compared%20to%20NREM%20sleep\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetylcholine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ACh) in certain circumstances. These two neurotransmitters play a role in sleep. However, if Ozempic does increase these neurotransmitter levels, the result would be better sleep\u2014not insomnia. \u201cFurther research is imperative,\u201d Dr. Singh says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-ozempic-insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent Ozempic insomnia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommendations for managing the gastrointestinal side effects of Ozempic might also mitigate sleep issues. Dr. Pepin and Dr. Singh both recommend avoiding alcohol. Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly can also promote restful sleep while optimizing digestion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Pepin offers a few suggestions for improving sleep hygiene, whether you\u2019re taking semaglutide or not:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time, even on the weekends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce screen time in the evenings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep the bedroom cool. Between 65 and 69 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for sleep.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and heavy meals close to bedtime.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use black-out shades at night.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expose yourself to natural daylight for five to 10 minutes first thing in the morning to help regulate your circadian rhythm.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some individuals with sleep issues on Ozempic might wonder whether it\u2019s best to switch medications. That\u2019s a conversation best had with a healthcare professional who knows your medical history, conditions, and other medications you may be taking. Although there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic alternatives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that aren\u2019t linked to insomnia, it\u2019s important to remember that Ozempic is not known to cause insomnia either. Likewise, adjusting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is unlikely to prevent or help since insomnia isn\u2019t a known side effect of Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Dr. Pepin\u2019s suggested lifestyle changes don\u2019t improve sleep, ask your healthcare provider whether they recommend any over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription sleep aids that do not interfere with Ozempic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/melatonin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melatonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dietary sleep supplement, is considered generally safe, but it\u2019s important to ask your healthcare provider before starting any new medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is not without potential side effects. The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects of Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are gastrointestinal issues. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novo-pi.com\/ozempic.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more than 5% of Ozempic users experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or constipation with Ozempic. These often improve with lifestyle changes such as increasing hydration and cutting back on fatty or sugary foods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More serious Ozempic side effects include kidney problems, pancreatitis, thyroid tumors, and gallstones or gallbladder inflammation. Serious allergic reactions may also occur. No matter the cause, insomnia poses a very real health risk. The National Institutes of Health warns that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/insomnia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insomnia can affect memory and concentration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Chronic insomnia, defined as insomnia that occurs more than three nights per week for three months, can even increase a person\u2019s risk for high blood pressure and heart disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/insomnia-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may involve a mix of lifestyle changes and OTC or prescription sleep aids.
