It belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered safe, it can still cause side effects, particularly gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and diarrhea. But there\u2019s also a possible link between Ozempic and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-clot-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here\u2019s what you should know and how to reduce any risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ozempic-cause-blood-clots\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Ozempic cause blood clots?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic\u2019s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozempic.com\/how-to-take\/side-effects.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does not report blood clots as a side effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThere is not enough evidence to say that semaglutide definitely causes blood clots,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/harborhealth.com\/providers\/jodie-pepin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jodie Pepin, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, clinical pharmacy program director at Harbor Health. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/209637s020s021lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information for Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not mention blood clots as a possible adverse reaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why the concern? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34024887\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2021 meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the SUSTAIN and PIONEER trials\u2014the clinical trial programs used to assess semaglutide\u2019s effectiveness in people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014found that semaglutide use increased deep vein thrombosis (DVT) by 266%. DVTs are blood clots in the deep veins of the body, oftentimes in the legs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRecent clinical studies such as PIONEER and SUSTAIN analysis have shown extremely high rates of blood clots in patients with diabetes,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healor.com\/provider\/raj-singhmd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Singh, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a primary care provider at HEALOR and medical director at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/rarev\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAREV Medical Spa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Las Vegas, Nevada. \u201cThe exact mechanisms are not known at this time, and further research is needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIndeed, more research <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needed,\u201d agrees Dr. Pepin. She explains that the SUSTAIN and PIONEER trials were designed to determine the effectiveness of semaglutide, not the drug\u2019s safety profile. Although an increase in blood clots was reported, researchers did not investigate whether Ozempic caused any of the blood clots. \u201cThe concerns that arose in the meta-analysis caused a desire to study this topic deeper,\u201d she says, adding that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently investigating several safety concerns with semaglutide and has added blood clots to the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-ozempic-cause-blood-clots\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does Ozempic cause blood clots?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is still not known whether Ozempic directly causes blood clots, there are some possible reasons people taking this drug might be more prone to DVT. The most likely cause of blood clots on Ozempic is related to why most people are on this drug to begin with: Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDiabetes is considered a mother of all diseases,\u201d Dr. Singh says. \u201cPatients with diabetes have many other associated comorbid conditions such as limited mobility, increased risk of infections, heart failure, lung problems, and chronic kidney disease. All these conditions are associated with [increasing the] risk of blood clots.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other conditions that increase the risk of blood clots and frequently co-occur with Type 2 diabetes include obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol (high LDL), and atherosclerosis, according to Dr. Pepin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another possible link between Ozempic and blood clots is dehydration. Dr. Singh points out that diarrhea, a very common Ozempic side effect, can lead to dehydration. When the body is dehydrated, the resulting thickened blood can raise the risk of blood clots, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/venous-thromboembolism\/understand-your-risk-for-excessive-blood-clotting\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, there\u2019s the reduced stomach acid production linked to Ozempic, which might lead to reduced vitamin absorption, according to Dr. Singh. \u201cLower levels of B12 are associated with increased homocysteine levels, which increases [the] risk of blood clot formation,\u201d he explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line is this: While there is no evidence to prove that Ozempic causes blood clots, the people prescribed this medication\u2014people with type 2 diabetes, primarily\u2014likely have a higher-than-average risk of blood clots. Not only that, but the gastrointestinal side effects of Ozempic may indirectly contribute to a heightened risk of blood clot formation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-ozempic-blood-clots\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent Ozempic blood clots<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tactics for preventing blood clots on Ozempic are the same as those for the general population: hydration and movement, primarily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"hydration-and-a-healthy-diet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydration and a healthy diet<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying hydrated can help with the gastrointestinal effects of semaglutide and may also indirectly lower the risk of blood clots. Drs. Pepin and Singh both recommend drinking plenty of fluids while on this medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water isn\u2019t the only hydrating beverage. Low-sugar electrolyte drinks help replenish essential minerals lost through diarrhea. If diarrhea is an issue, Dr. Pepin suggests adding more fiber to your diet. Soluble fiber, which is found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and over-the-counter supplements such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/psyllium-fiber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psyllium fiber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helps soak up intestinal water and create bulk in the digestive tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUsually, the GI side effects of GLP-1s can be decreased by eating a healthy diet full of vegetables and fruit, healthy grains, and protein,\u201d Dr. Pepin says. \u201cHigh-sugar and high-fat food, and a high volume of food, make GI side effects worse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular movement is also crucial because it helps circulation. In addition to exercising more, Dr. Singh suggests avoiding sitting for prolonged periods. This might mean scheduling regular stretch breaks throughout the workday or avoiding long flights if you have any risk factors associated with blood clots: obesity, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. \u201cThe good news,\u201d Dr. Pepin says, \u201cis that patients are more likely to exercise as they lose weight on Ozempic. This can decrease the incidence of blood clot formation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"supplements-and-other-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements and other medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no supplements that will prevent blood clots, but Dr. Singh says it might be a good idea to start vitamin B-12 supplementation while on Ozempic. If a B-12 deficiency is to blame for blood clots on Ozempic, this could help prevent an adverse event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people might think a reduced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would reduce the risk of blood clots, but Dr. Pepin says that\u2019s not necessarily true. \u201cThere is no evidence that blood clots are associated with higher doses of semaglutide,\u201d she explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alternatives to Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that don\u2019t include blood clots as a side effect, but remember, blood clots are not a proven side effect of Ozempic either. Other GLP-1 injectable drugs include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/mounjaro-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/trulicity\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trulicity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/saxenda\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wegovy-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (semaglutide), an injection that is FDA approved for weight loss rather than managing blood sugar levels, contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also contains semaglutide as an active ingredient but in oral rather than injectable form.
