However, experts caution that research is still developing. You should not rely on sea moss alone to treat diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-sea-moss-lower-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does sea moss lower blood sugar?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSea moss has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fiber\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fiber<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which might slow down how fast your body absorbs sugar, possibly keeping your blood sugar more stable,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huntingtonhealth.org\/physicians\/rajkumar-r-dasgupta-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, internist and program director at Huntington Health Hospital in California. \u201cSome compounds in it could play a role in how your body handles glucose, but there\u2019s no strong research yet proving that it lowers blood sugar.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome other types of seaweed, like brown seaweed, contain compounds like fucoxanthin that have been studied for their potential benefits in regulating blood sugar,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wellbridge.org\/contributors\/edmond-hakimi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmond Hakimi, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, medical director at Wellbridge. For example, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2815322\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found seaweed could improve glycemic control for people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/about\/about-type-2-diabetes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the most common form of diabetes. Experts suggest beginning with a low dose to see how it affects you and your blood sugar. \u201cA lot of people take one to two tablespoons of sea moss gel (around four to eight grams) or 500 mg to 1,000 mg of capsules daily,\u201d advises Dr. Dasgupta. \u201cStart slow, see how you feel, and adjust if needed\u2014but always check with your healthcare provider to be sure it\u2019s right for you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-sea-moss-to-lower-blood-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take sea moss to lower blood sugar?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes a few weeks of consistent use to see the benefits of sea moss, according to Dr. Hakimi. However, he stresses that \u201cwhen it comes to blood sugar management or diabetes, there\u2019s no evidence that sea moss will directly help with that.\u201d Any positive effects are likely related to overall nutrition rather than anything specific to diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome people feel a difference with digestion or energy in a few days to a week, but there\u2019s no set timeline for any impact on blood sugar,\u201d says Dr. Dasgupta.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-sea-moss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take sea moss?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sea moss is safe for most people, but it does have potential risks and side effects for certain groups. \u201cSea moss can affect your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/thyroid-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you take too much because of the iodine in it,\u201d says Dr. Dasgupta. \u201cPeople with thyroid conditions, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, should be cautious about sea moss because it\u2019s rich in iodine, which can affect thyroid function,\u201d agrees Dr. Hakimi. Additionally, pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before taking sea moss because they are at greater risk of problems due to too much iodine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8232781\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thins the blood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it\u2019s risky if you\u2019re on blood thinners,\u201d adds Dr. Dasgupta. Sea moss contains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/CarageenanReport-2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carrageenan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a byproduct that may cause gastrointestinal symptoms, among other issues. \u201cIt could cause some bloating or an upset stomach if you overdo it.\u201d Dr. Dasgupta points out. People with inflammatory bowel diseases should not take sea moss. He also notes that those who are allergic to seaweed or iodine should not consume it. Certain edible seaweeds, including sea moss, may be <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contaminated with heavy metals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as arsenic. Both experts stress the importance of checking in with a healthcare professional before trying any new dietary supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While sea moss does provide some benefits that could be helpful in managing diabetes, it is not proven to lower blood sugar on its own and should never be used as a sole method for controlling diabetes. Sea moss can be a nutritious addition to most people\u2019s diets.
