It belongs to a well-known family of drugs called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that includes other famous drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paxil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paxil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paroxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). These three SSRIs\u2014fluoxetine, paroxetine, and sertraline\u2014are the most common SSRIs that veterinarians use in dogs. These drugs can help a dog with behavior problems, anxiety, or compulsive behaviors. In these cases, sertraline and other SSRIs help calm a dog\u2019s anxieties, worries, and fears.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-sertraline-used-for-in-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is sertraline used for in dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians use sertraline in dogs to manage problem behaviors due to anxiety, phobias, aggression, and compulsions. Sertraline is both an antidepressant and an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anxiolytics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-anxiety medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"behavior-disorders-and-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavior disorders and anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs experience anxiety, phobias, and panic, just like people. A veterinarian can help identify the underlying issue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians don\u2019t turn to drugs as the solution to problem behaviors. Instead, canine anxiety and problem behaviors are best handled by limiting the dog\u2019s exposure to stress-inducing stimuli and working with the dog to change its behaviors. Drugs like sertraline are only used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dvm360storage.com\/cvc\/proceedings\/sd\/Behavior\/Horwitz\/Horwitz,%20Debra_Update_medications.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aid behavior modification efforts.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sertraline is one of those drugs, but veterinarians are more likely to use another SSRI like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluoxetine-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Both belong to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugs work by altering the brain\u2019s chemistry, giving the dog more control over its mood and behaviors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in people, it may take several weeks of daily sertraline doses before pet parents begin to notice changes in the dog\u2019s anxiety or behavior. It\u2019s important to understand that veterinarians don\u2019t intend sertraline to be a lifelong fix for problem behaviors. The goal is to succeed with behavior modification and eventually wean the dog off anti-anxiety medications like sertraline.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-sertraline-safe-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is sertraline safe for dogs?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterinarians consider sertraline safe for dogs. Side effects are minimal.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, sertraline is not FDA-approved for use in small animals, so the veterinary use of sertraline is an extra-label use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sertraline isn\u2019t safe for all dogs. Any dog who has had an allergic reaction to sertraline or other SSRIs shouldn\u2019t be given sertraline. You can find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a list of those drugs here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Combining sertraline with an MAOI can cause serious and even life-threatening side effects. To be safe, sertraline should not be given to a dog until an MAOI has been stopped for at least two weeks. A MAOI cannot be started in a dog until five weeks have passed since the last dose of sertraline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some drugs used to treat anxiety-related behaviors in dogs may cause problems when combined with sertraline. Pet parents who give their dog CBD on top of sertraline could notice these side effects getting worse.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"sertraline-dosage-for-dogs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sertraline dosage for dogs<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The standard sertraline dosage for dogs is 0.5\u20134 mg\/kg given once or twice per day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plumb\u2019s Veterinary Drug Handbook lists the following recommended dosages:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>For general anxiety: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.5\u20134 mg\/kg once or twice daily<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>For compulsive disorders: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2\u20134 mg\/kg given in one or two doses daily OR 1\u20134 mg\/kg given once daily OR 1\u20132 mg\/kg given once daily for no longer than three to six months followed by two to four weeks of gradually reduced doses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>For problem behaviors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.25\u20130.5 mg\/kg given once daily for at least four to six months, including a period of tapering doses for three to five weeks<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>For anxiety or problem behaviors: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.5\u20134 mg\/kg daily<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A veterinarian is likely to prescribe or supply pet owners with a veterinary version of sertraline, either tablets or oral solution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to give a dog a human version of sertraline if it\u2019s okay with the veterinarian. Sertraline tablets for people come in dosage strengths as small as 25 mg. The tablets are scored so they can be divided into smaller doses. Sertraline also comes as a solution or a concentrated oral solution for more precise dosing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"can-dogs-overdose-on-sertraline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can dogs overdose on sertraline?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs can overdose on sertraline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not exceed the veterinarian\u2019s prescribed dosage. If a dog is given too much sertraline, immediately call a veterinarian, emergency veterinary clinic, or the ASPCA Poison Control Center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sertraline primarily affects receptors in the central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, and circulatory system. If you\u2019re unsure a dog has overdosed on sertraline, one or more of these three systems will be affected. However, it\u2019s not intended as a lifelong treatment.
