A<\/span> central nervous system (CNS) relaxant<\/span><\/a>, cyclobenzaprine is<\/span> FDA approved<\/span><\/a> to treat muscle pain and muscle spasms. A doctor may sometimes prescribe cyclobenzaprine off-label to treat fibromyalgia and myofascial pain that occurs as a result of temporomandibular disorders. There is also preliminary evidence that cyclobenzaprine can be helpful in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cyclobenzaprine generally provides quick relief, working in about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the dose and whether you are taking an immediate or extended-release formula of the medication.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, how fast does cyclobenzaprine work, exactly?<\/span><\/p>\n

In general, cyclobenzaprine begins to provide relief in 20 to 60 minutes, says<\/span> Andrew Youssouf, MD,<\/span><\/a> double board-certified in addiction medicine and emergency medicine, and the medical director of Ikon Recovery. \u201cThe speed at which it works can depend on the dosage and whether it is immediate-release or extended-release,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Cometa says that there is no discernible difference between the two when it comes to how long they take to work. \u201cThere is always the potential for some inter-brand variability, but that would be minimal,\u201d she says. What about taking an increased dose of the drug? \u201cAn increased dose would increase the effect, but not necessarily the time to effect,\u201d Dr. Cometa commented.<\/span><\/p>\n

And how might you know that cyclobenzaprine is beginning to take effect? \u201cYou\u2019ll start to notice the medication working when your muscles begin to feel more relaxed,\u201d describes Taher Saifullah, MD, a pain management specialist and founder of <\/span>Spine & Pain Institute Los Angeles<\/span><\/a>. \u201cFor people with tight, knotted muscles or spasms, the relief can feel like a gradual loosening, where it\u2019s easier to move without that gripping pain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, says Dr. Saifullah, many people begin to feel a sense of calm or even mild drowsiness. This is a clear sign that the medication is taking effect. \u201cThe intensity of the muscle pain or stiffness usually fades into the background, and some patients describe it like their body has \u2018taken a deep breath\u2019 and let go of some of that tension,\u201d Dr. Saifullah shares.<\/span><\/p>\n
