Nausea can last for minutes, hours, or even days at a time, and it ranges in severity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug; propionic acid is its active ingredient. It can treat many symptoms that can accompany nausea, like aches and a fever. But can a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dose of ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treat nausea itself? For a number of reasons, healthcare professionals discourage people from using ibuprofen to treat nausea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ibuprofen-help-with-nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does ibuprofen help with nausea?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, let\u2019s look at information obtained from research. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1080603219302261\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilderness &amp; Environmental Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> assessed the efficacy of ibuprofen in participants with acute mountain sickness and high altitude headaches. Ibuprofen helped to reduce nausea a little, but not as much as other medications that targeted the GI system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen is primarily used to treat pain, inflammation, and fever\u2014so if you\u2019re looking for the best remedies for nausea or gastrointestinal issues, this pill isn\u2019t it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor nausea itself, it doesn\u2019t do anything,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/recommends\/health\/author\/raj-dasgupta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chief medical advisor for Fortune Recommends and a quadruple board-certified physician. \u201cIn fact, ibuprofen can cause stomach ulcers, especially if taken for a long time or in high doses \u2026 [It] can break down the stomach\u2019s defenses against stomach acid, leading to inflammation and ulcers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include stomach upset and pain, heartburn, rash, dizziness, and more. The medicine can also contribute to high blood pressure and in some cases, lead to kidney and liver problems. Ibuprofen can be especially damaging if taken in higher doses or on a long-term, regular basis, which can lead to a stomach ulcer and other GI tract issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-ibuprofen-help-with-nausea-from-flu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does ibuprofen help with nausea from flu?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While ibuprofen is not the medication to take for nausea, it can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/influenza-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat other flu symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in both children and adults. \u201cAs an anti-inflammatory and pain reliever, it may treat other symptoms of the flu, including body aches, fevers, chills, and headache,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@socalgastrodoc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Wendi LeBrett, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a gastroenterologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-you-take-ibuprofen-on-an-empty-stomach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen on an empty stomach<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, though\u2014doing so leads to a higher risk of GI upset. Dr. Dasgupta encourages opting for bland foods, such as crackers or toast. Additionally, smaller meals can be easier to consume.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers say some pills and medications can treat flu-related nausea. Examples include ondansetron (an anti-nausea medication) and bismuth salicylate, more commonly known as Pepto-Bismol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Various forms of treatment can get rid of nausea from the flu, though, not just a pill or other medication. Dr. LeBrett mentions ginger, lemon, peppermint, and staying hydrated. Dr. Dasgupta recommends clear liquids, specifically, such as ginger ale and herbal tea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, nausea or the flu leads to vomiting. Replenishing fluids after vomiting is crucial. Sports drinks can replace the electrolytes lost; ice chips can soothe a sore throat, relieve sweating, or serve as another method of rehydration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut if you\u2019re still feeling awful, it\u2019s a good idea to check in with a doctor,\u201d Dr. Dasgupta adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-ibuprofen-help-with-nausea-from-drinking-or-hangovers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does ibuprofen help with nausea from drinking or hangovers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, ibuprofen can\u2019t help with hangover nausea, but if you\u2019re also experiencing a headache or body aches, ibuprofen may help in those ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"drawbacks-of-taking-ibuprofen-for-nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawbacks of taking ibuprofen for nausea\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen is not only unhelpful for nausea, but it can be harmful if taken for a long time or in high doses, Dr. Dasgupta says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNSAIDs are one of the most common causes of stomach\/gastrointestinal ulcers,\u201d Dr. LeBrett adds. \u201cTaking ibuprofen or other NSAIDs for digestive symptoms can exacerbate your digestive symptoms, including worsening stomach pain or acid reflux (GERD).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also interact with other medications, Dr. Dasgupta says, like blood thinners, \u201cBottom line is do not take ibuprofen for nausea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-best-medicine-for-nausea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best medicine for nausea?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most effective way to treat nausea is by taking other medications and applying at-home remedies. Some helpful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-nausea medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include ondansetron, promethazine, metoclopramide, prochlorperazine, lorazepam, dimenhydrinate, meclizine, hydroxyzine, phosphorated carbohydrate, scopolamine, and bismuth subsalicylate.
