They\u2019re prescription drugs that work by reducing swelling and symptoms caused by immune system reactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation can also contribute to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">episodic migraines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/migraine-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment of acute migraines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often entails anti-inflammatory drugs, could <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be used to treat cephalgia (or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">head pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), too?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> professionals don\u2019t typically prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/migraine-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">39 million Americans who get <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but they will in some situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-prednisone-be-used-for-migraines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be used for migraines?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, other medications are used for migraine treatment. \u201cCurrent practice recommendations do not recommend the routine use of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the acute treatment of migraines,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uthsc.edu\/faculty\/profile\/?netid=lhentric\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luke Hentrich, Pharm.D., BCPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an assistant professor who answered the questions in conjunction with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hannah-suber\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hannah Suber, a Pharm.D. candidate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both at the University of Tennessee\u2019s Health Science Center College of Pharmacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prednisone\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is sometimes used to treat migraines. Dr. Hentrich says the body of literature for using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat migraines has been found to be beneficial in treating \u201cstatus migrainosus,\u201d or over-seven-day-long \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe migraines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that persist despite the appropriate use of over-the-counter and prescription medications, and those who have a history of recurrent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine headaches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be taken alone or in conjunction with another medication. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is quite efficient by itself or as adjunct to other migraine medication in treating recurring moderate to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe migraines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called status migrainosus, and also certain types of headaches,\u201d agrees <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/drdemian.com\/about-me\/\">Hany Demian<\/a>, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pain management healthcare provider and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biospine.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BioSpine Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/ebp\/citation\/2019\/03000\/are_steroids_effective_in_preventing_a_recurrence.10.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0article in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidence-Based Practice<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suggests this, too. It says adding a steroid to standard abortive therapy reduced the rate of moderate or severe recurrence of migraines within 72 hours of treatment by about 30% compared to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo group<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The way a patient consumes the steroid may also matter. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/headachejournal.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/head.13334\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">retrospective study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that both oral steroids and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intravenous<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injection steroids can serve as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short-term<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cluster headaches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the former might be more effective. The researchers noted that a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">randomized<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trial is a warranted next step, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another option for treating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cluster headaches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/americanmigrainefoundation.org\/resource-library\/dhe-for-migraine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dihydroergotamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an acute migraine medication. Why might one medication be prescribed over another?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hentrich says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> providers prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cif a patient is unable to take common medications prescribed for acute migraine treatment.\u201d He gives the examples of a person with a kidney condition being unable to take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sumatriptan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to a previous heart attack, or rimegepant due to insurance coverage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey may also prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if the migraine has persisted for a long period, or for migraines that persist from overuse of other acute treatments, known as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication overuse<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> headache,\u201d Dr. Hentrich adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Demian, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are most often prescribed to kill <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine headaches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they\u2019re taken as soon as the migraine begins. He adds that nasal sprays are faster-acting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former is true in Dr. Hentrich\u2019s practice; he specifies that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sumatriptan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (as an oral tablet, nasal spray, nasal powder, or subcutaneous injection) is most commonly prescribed\u2014but again, that option can be dangerous for people who have had a heart attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As far as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prophylactic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> measures or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migraine prevention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Botox is a common go-to, Dr. Demian says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-does-prednisone-work-for-migraines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work for migraines?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t currently recommended outright, the mechanisms behind its helpfulness for migraines are unclear, according to Dr. Hentrich. But, according to him and Dr. Demian, the reasoning probably goes back to inflammation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can readily cross the blood-brain barrier and reduce neurogenic inflammation, hence reducing the recurrence of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/headache-causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headaches<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Demian explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-prednisone-to-work-for-migraines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to work for migraines?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there&#8217;s no definitive evidence around how quickly a person may feel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s benefits during a migraine, Dr. Hentrich says available pharmacokinetic information suggests around two hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Demian, it can be as long as four hours (on average), though. A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high dose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be needed for migraines, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neurology.org\/doi\/10.1212\/WNL.94.15_supplement.4645\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0study in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neurology<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gave <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cluster headache<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> participants 100 mg of oral <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for five days, then tapered by 20 mg every three days, or a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with an increasing dose of verapamil, starting with 40 mg three times per day. Almost 50% of the participants who took <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> experienced a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headache attack<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reduction, whereas only 14.5% of those who took the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">placebo<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1046\/j.1468-2982.2000.00028.x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cephalalgia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stopped symptomatic medications and started <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tapering<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doses for 6 days, then introduced <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventive medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It was also successful because 85% of the participants had less frequent headaches during the first six days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pretty promising research, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is best taken with food or milk in the morning, and the latter is used to align with the body\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroid<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> production. To avoid misuse, follow a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provider\u2019s instructions on how much to take and how often. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18362878\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dependence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is unusual, thankfully, though it can be serious.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"comparing-prednisone-with-other-migraine-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comparing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with other migraine medications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is one medication for migraines better than another? Dr. Hentrich says no large studies have compared <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to other medications for acute migraine treatment, though a small study has.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The small study, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/headachejournal.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/head.12487\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, compared <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to celecoxib, a prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analgesic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The results showed that celecoxib was favored during the first three weeks and had fewer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and CGRP antagonists are efficacious, too. \u201cHowever, some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as intranasal and subcutaneous <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sumatriptan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, may work more quickly than others,\u201d Dr. Hentrich adds. \u201cCGRP antagonists, such as ubrogepant and rimegepant, are newer agents that are highly effective for acute migraine treatment and have a favorable <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> profile.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Demian mentioned, Botox is considered the gold standard, but only as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preventive treatment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Otherwise, he doesn\u2019t see a clear winner. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prednisone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an effective drug, but as effective as the new generation of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triptans<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The \u201cbest\u201d treatment depends on an individual\u2019s health history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Hentrich, jumping straight to prescription medications might not be the answer.
