It\u2019s a popular drug, but it\u2019s not without side effects. We\u2019ll share why some people report Ozempic bruising as well as what you can do about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ozempic-cause-bruising\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Ozempic cause bruising?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic itself doesn\u2019t cause bruising, but its mode of administration can. Ozempic is administered as a subcutaneous injection into the fatty tissue just beneath the skin. But not many people experience bruising from Ozempic. In fact, only 0.6% of people on the 0.5 mg dose and 0.3% of patients taking the 1 mg dose experienced an injection site reaction, such as bruising, in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/endocrinology\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2021.645563\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide\u2019s clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/209637s020s021lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic\u2019s label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that only 0.2% of patients reported injection site reactions in placebo-controlled trials. So, chances are relatively low that you\u2019ll see bruising, but it\u2019s something to watch for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-does-ozempic-cause-bruising\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why does Ozempic cause bruising?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is an injectable drug, and every injection, regardless of the medicine, can lead to bruising. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/monelle-burrus-2381796b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monelle Burrus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nurse practitioner and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vervehc.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Verve Health weight loss clinic in Oregon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThere will always be skin damage if the needle pierces small blood vessels in the area that will be injected.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, \u201cCertain areas of the body, like the abdomen or thigh (common injection sites), may be more prone to bruising due to blood vessel density or tissue sensitivity,\u201d says Dr. David Garcia, DO, founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/polarisrejuvenation.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polaris Rejuvenation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These damaged vessels may bleed into the surrounding area, forming a bruise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic is a self-administered drug, so you\u2019ll give the injections to yourself. Bruising can also arise from injecting the drug incorrectly\u2014like pressing too hard. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7994491\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study on self-administered insulin injections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researchers concluded that bruising was often the result of patients pushing the pen into the skin. Additionally, \u201cinjecting the substance into a blood vessel or reusing a particular area of the body\u201d may increase the risk of bruising, says Burrus. \u201cAlso, some medications and diseases might increase the risk of the development of bruises in the patients.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that injection site bruising usually isn\u2019t a big deal. It might look concerning, but it\u2019s ultimately harmless, and these bruises typically only last a few days at most. That said, if an injection site bruise doesn\u2019t go away or comes with new or worsening side effects, see your healthcare provider, who can determine whether the bruising is due to another cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-prevent-ozempic-bruising\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent Ozempic bruising<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding bruises while taking Ozempic is largely a matter of injection technique. As the saying goes, practice makes perfect, but even people who have never self-administered injections before can take some precautions to reduce the chances of discomfort:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Get a demonstration. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider can show you how to use the injector properly so you can avoid some of the common pitfalls that might cause bruising.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-use-ozempic-pen\/\"><b>How to use an Ozempic pen<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pick the right location.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cAvoid injecting the veins and instead prefer the areas with more subcutaneous fat,\u201d says Burrus. You\u2019ll also want to avoid muscles. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ozempic.com\/how-to-take\/ozempic-pen.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ozempic website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends the skin of your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rotate the injection location. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per Dr. Garcia, \u201cRotating injection sites and using the proper technique (e.g., injecting at a 90-degree angle and applying gentle pressure after the injection) can help reduce the risk of bruising.\u201d Switch up the site with every injection so you don\u2019t disrupt the same blood vessels over and over.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Identify blood thinners that could contribute. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome individuals may take <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/anticoagulants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood thinners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or have conditions that make their blood thinner, which increases the risk of bruising from even minor trauma, including injections,\u201d Dr. Garcia says. And this doesn\u2019t just mean prescription drugs like Warfarin. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like ibuprofen and supplements like vitamin E can also cause blood thinning. Your healthcare provider can discuss the risks and benefits of blood thinners with you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Apply a cold compress. <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32886867\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One systematic review and meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that applying cold to the site before and after a subcutaneous injection of the blood thinner heparin reduced discomfort and bruising. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S106203032300002X\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study demonstrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that compression (without cold) after injection of heparin had similar benefits. Although these studies focused on a specific drug, the findings may be applicable to other injectable medicines.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t touch it. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might be tempted to touch or massage a bruise, but this might actually make it worse. Instead, just let it heal.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"ozempic-alternatives\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic alternatives<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can\u2019t get an injection site reaction if you don\u2019t have an injection site, and there are some alternatives that come as an oral medication instead of an injectable one. The FDA approved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6969659\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Rybelsus) in 2019, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2302392\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other oral GLP-1 medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like orforglipron are in development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But GLP-1 medications aren\u2019t the only way to treat Type 2 diabetes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metformin-hcl\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another popular and effective option, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/health-wellness\/medication\/oral-other-injectable-diabetes-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the American Diabetes Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DPP-4 inhibitors, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sglt2-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SGLT2 inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sulfonylureas, and thiazolidinediones are other viable alternatives. Each one has oral formulations, so they won\u2019t pose the same risk of injection site bruising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-vs-metformin\/\"><b>Ozempic vs. metformin<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor certain patients who have uncontrolled Type 2 diabetes, insulin replacement therapy might be beneficial,\u201d Burrus says. Plus, \u201cexercise and diet come first in the management of diabetes, and these may help in the unnecessary use of drugs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These alternatives won\u2019t necessarily work for every situation, but your healthcare provider can give you a better idea of which might be best for your particular condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"other-ozempic-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other Ozempic side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While bruising is possible with Ozempic, it\u2019s relatively rare compared to some of the drug\u2019s other side effects. The most common Ozempic side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and constipation. Nausea is easily the most prevalent, though. In clinical trials reported on the drug\u2019s label, 15.8% of patients taking the 5 mg dose and 20.3% of patients taking the 1 mg dose reported nausea. Additionally, 5% and 9.2% (respectively) reported vomiting, while 8.5% and 8.8% reported diarrhea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-nausea-causes\/\"><b>Why does Ozempic cause nausea?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from gastrointestinal side effects, Ozempic may also cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when taken with other diabetes medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/sulfonylureas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulfonylureas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/insulins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It has been associated with complications from diabetic retinopathy. In rare cases, it can lead to serious adverse reactions like pancreatitis, kidney injury, gallstones, gallbladder inflammation, facial swelling, and allergic reactions. Thyroid tumors have been noted in semaglutide studies on rodents. These small bruises should go away within a few days. But there are certain situations when you should seek out medical assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Burrus, \u201cIf one gets unusual or too many bruises while on Ozempic, it is wise to seek medical advice. For instance, this is very important when the bruises appear together with other signs like swelling and skin discoloration. These might be [from] more serious problems like bleeding issues or adverse drug effects. Checking in with the doctor regularly is quite essential to any of the patients taking this medication.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also see a healthcare provider if you notice:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>New or unexplained bruising:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you start seeing bruises appear seemingly out of nowhere in places other than your injection site, it might indicate another issue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bruising that doesn\u2019t go away:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bruises or discoloration that don\u2019t go away could be a sign of infection or other conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Other serious side effects: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your bruising comes with any of the severe adverse events listed above, get it checked out right away.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of other concerning symptoms, if injection site bruises are causing you pain or discomfort, contact your healthcare provider.
