It\u2019s a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/glp-1-benefits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that helps lower blood sugar, aid in weight loss, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/fda-approves-ozempic-for-cardiovascular-risk-reduction-in-adults-with-type-2-diabetes-and-known-heart-disease-updates-rybelsus-label-300988672.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in those with heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic doesn\u2019t seem to directly impact your kidney function, but the changes Ozempic causes in other areas of the body can affect the kidneys. Here\u2019s what to know about how Ozempic affects kidney function\u2014for better and for worse\u2014along with what researchers have been discovering as they evaluate Ozempic\u2019s impact on kidney health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-ozempic-hard-on-kidneys\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Ozempic hard on kidneys?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStudies show that Ozempic could be beneficial to kidney health in people living with Type 2 diabetes due to its effects on blood glucose levels and blood pressure,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myweightlosspartner.com\/about-us\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Lahey, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a physician with My Weight Loss Partner in Michigan. However, it isn\u2019t all smooth sailing. \u201cThere are potential complications for people taking Ozempic, with the rapid weight loss the drug causes increasing your risk for acute kidney injury,\u201d Dr. Lahey adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnyone who experiences rapid weight loss or fluid loss can end up with acute kidney injury (AKI), which can be extreme enough to require hospitalization and even dialysis to recover from,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muhealth.org\/doctors\/ramesh-khanna-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramesh Khanna<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chair of nephrology at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MU Health Care<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other factors can cause rapid weight loss that leads to AKI, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10314685\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">training for certain high-intensity sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so this isn\u2019t unique to Ozempic. But it is<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8039426\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with existing kidney conditions should be aware of<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when taking the drug. \u201cIt\u2019s less likely to happen if you lose weight slowly and steadily,\u201d says Dr. Khanna, adding that he typically sees AKI in people taking Ozempic when they lose large amounts of weight very quickly, such as 50\u2013100 pounds in a matter of months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou may also be at a higher risk of AKI if you experience severe gastrointestinal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects from Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Lahey says. Examples include frequent vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration (especially if you have preexisting kidney disease of any kind). According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/209637s020s021lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drug\u2019s label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 20% of patients taking Ozempic 1 mg weekly experience nausea and 9% have diarrhea, and if these effects cause dehydration, AKI could occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/endocrinology\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2022.1032199\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/saxenda-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saxenda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (liraglutide) may be more likely to cause AKI than other types of GLP-1 receptor agonists, like Ozempic. The study was limited by being based on reported side effects in a database, and findings need to be replicated in a prospective trial ideally.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ozempic-and-kidney-health-the-connection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic and kidney health: The connection<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Lahey, Ozempic itself doesn\u2019t target kidney function, but it does provide secondary benefits\u2014like weight reduction, improved blood sugar control, and lower cardiovascular risks\u2014that can help protect kidney health. This is particularly helpful for people with Type 2 diabetes, for whom chronically high blood sugar can cause kidney damage. \u201cWhere Ozempic could be beneficial is by helping to lower blood sugar and promote weight loss, which in turn would put less of a burden on the kidneys and support good kidney health over the long run.\u201d Dr. Lahey adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"effects-of-ozempic-semaglutide-on-chronic-kidney-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effects of Ozempic (semaglutide) on chronic kidney disease<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of what we know so far about Ozempic\u2019s effect on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/chronic-kidney-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic kidney disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CKD) comes from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa2403347#ap0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent study published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New England Journal of Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the study, participants with CKD and Type 2 diabetes taking semaglutide for more than three years had a 24% lower chance of having what researchers called a \u201cmajor kidney disease event,\u201d including kidney failure, needing dialysis or a transplant, decline in kidney function, and kidney-related or cardiovascular death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This suggests that semaglutide may be able to delay or slow the progression of CKD in people with Type 2 diabetes, though Dr. Lahey notes more research is needed to determine the safety and efficacy of the treatments used in the study for people with both chronic health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-ozempic-for-chronic-kidney-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take Ozempic for chronic kidney disease?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, Ozempic is only approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and lowering the risk of cardiovascular events in people with Type 2 diabetes and known heart disease. So it\u2019s unlikely a healthcare provider would prescribe Ozempic to someone with only CKD and not Type 2 diabetes (or that an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-get-insurance-to-cover-ozempic-for-weight-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance provider would offer coverage for Ozempic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in that scenario).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-weight-loss\/\"><b>Ozempic for weight loss<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for whether healthcare providers are looking at Ozempic as a possible treatment for CKD in people <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes, Dr. Lahey says it\u2019s not common practice at this point. While the data is reassuring and it seems like Ozempic may slow the progression of CKD in people with Type 2 diabetes, more significant, long-term studies are needed to understand if and how Ozempic could help manage kidney disease.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Type 2 diabetes and CKD may see improvement in their kidney function while taking Ozempic, because the drug improves other metrics of health (like weight, blood sugar, and cardiovascular health) that reduce the burden on the kidneys. But Dr. Khanna stresses that you should work with your healthcare provider closely to ensure your kidney function isn\u2019t negatively affected by your weight loss. He suggests following a gradual titration schedule (slowly increasing the amount of medication you take) and taking just enough medication to lose weight slowly and steadily, aiming for about 3\u20135 pounds per month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have CKD but not Type 2 diabetes, or you and your healthcare provider have decided Ozempic isn\u2019t right for you, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidneyfund.org\/treatments\/medicines-manage-kidney-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other medications you can take to manage CKD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on the cause of your kidney disease. For example, people with diabetes may be able to manage mild CKD by controlling blood sugar effectively with insulin or drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-vs-metformin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metformin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-vs-jardiance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jardiance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And people with other chronic health conditions like hypertension or heart disease may be prescribed medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ace-inhibitors-vs-beta-blockers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beta blockers and ACE inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
