It can also be passed from a mother to her baby during childbirth. Gonorrhea infections are most prevalent among young adults. While gonorrhea doesn\u2019t always cause symptoms, when it does, it can cause pain during urination, unusual genital discharge, and bleeding between periods. In women, untreated gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since gonorrhea is a bacterial infection, it\u2019s treated with antibiotics. If you\u2019ve been diagnosed with this sexually transmitted disease (STD), you may be wondering: Can amoxicillin treat gonorrhea? Amoxicillin is a well-known antibiotic, but it\u2019s not used for gonorrhea. That\u2019s because<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/amoxicillin-for-std\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gonorrhea has developed antibiotic resistance to amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning that amoxicillin isn\u2019t able to eliminate gonorrhea and is not an effective option. Instead,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK558903\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the first-line treatment for gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a single-dose intramuscular injection of the antibiotic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ceftriaxone-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ceftriaxone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a type of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cephalosporins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cephalosporin antibiotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read on for more information about amoxicillin for gonorrhea, including why it\u2019s not the best treatment for the condition, and what to know about recommended treatment options for this STD.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-amoxicillin-treat-gonorrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does amoxicillin treat gonorrhea?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s common to wonder: Can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cure gonorrhea? That\u2019s because amoxicillin is a popular antibiotic. But while amoxicillin may be a good choice for treating other bacterial infections, such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482250\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> lower respiratory tract infections and urinary tract infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s not a good choice for gonorrhea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAmoxicillin is not recommended as an effective treatment for gonorrhea,\u201d says Soma Mandal, MD, an internist at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summithealth.com\/doctors\/soma-mandal-md\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Summit Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And why is this? While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jid\/article-abstract\/129\/Supplement_2\/S262\/908519?redirectedFrom=fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the past, amoxicillin and other antibiotics were used to treat gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that is not the case anymore. \u201cGonorrhea, caused by the bacterium <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has developed resistance to many antibiotics that were previously effective, including amoxicillin,\u201d Dr. Mandal explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not just amoxicillin that\u2019s not effective against gonorrhea. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/treatment-guidelines\/gonorrhea-adults.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gonorrhea has also developed resistance to a class of antibiotics called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/quinolones\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoroquinolones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Resistance to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/azithromycin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">azithromycin <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been demonstrated in gonorrhea as well. As of now, the only antibiotic that is able to effectively treat gonorrhea is ceftriaxone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctorej.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eboni January, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, OB-GYN and fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG) explains, the preferred treatment for gonorrhea is a single-dose intramuscular injection of ceftriaxone, which is a third-generation cephalosporin. \u201cThe CDC and WHO (World Health Organization) recommend ceftriaxone as the first-line treatment because of its effectiveness and the resistance pattern of gonorrhea,\u201d says Dr. January. \u201cCeftriaxone covers most strains of gonorrhea, and its intramuscular administration ensures high tissue concentration, which is particularly important for clearing the infection.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes other treatments may be considered, according to Dr. January. \u201cIn cases where chlamydia coinfection is suspected, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/doxycycline\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (100 mg twice daily for 7 days) is also commonly prescribed, as these two sexually transmitted infections often occur together,\u201d she explains. But there isn\u2019t a scenario where you would be prescribed amoxicillin for gonorrhea, Dr. January emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"recommended-amoxicillin-dosages\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommended amoxicillin dosages<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are looking for information about how to treat gonorrhea with amoxicillin, you might want to know about amoxicillin dosages for gonorrhea. Nonetheless, because amoxicillin is rarely, if ever, used to treat gonorrhea, there is no recommended dosage of amoxicillin for gonorrhea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, we can look to the past to see what amoxicillin dose for gonorrhea might look like. \u201cIf amoxicillin were used (although this is not recommended due to resistance), older regimens would have required high doses (e.g., 3 grams) taken with probenecid to slow renal clearance,\u201d explains Dr. January. \u201cHowever, this is far from current practice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/gonorrhea\/hcp\/clinical-care\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the typical dosage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ceftriaxone-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ceftriaxone for gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 500 mg given as an intramuscular injection. This is the only CDC-recommended treatment for uncomplicated cases of gonorrhea that involve the genitals, anus, or mouth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-does-it-take-amoxicillin-to-work\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long does it take amoxicillin to work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin is not used to treat gonorrhea, but if it were used, it would take several days to work, Dr. January says. But, \u201cgiven the resistance patterns of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, it may not be effective at all,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you use the preferred treatment for gonorrhea (ceftriaxone injection), symptoms should start improving within a few days, Dr. January says. \u201cYou\u2019ll know the antibiotic is working when symptoms, such as pain during urination, genital discharge, or pelvic discomfort, begin to improve,\u201d she describes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers may perform a \u201ctest of cure\u201d to ensure that the infection has totally cleared. Dr. January says this is used more often in certain populations, such as those with persistent symptoms or pregnant women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if gonorrhea symptoms don\u2019t go away even after taking the recommended antibiotics? You should follow up with your healthcare provider in this case. Often, it\u2019s not that the ceftriaxone treatment didn\u2019t work, but that<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/hivstd\/info\/edmat\/GonorrheaTreatmentFailure.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you got reinfected with gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Either way, you should seek medical attention. Your doctor will discuss next steps with you, which will likely involve another course of antibiotic treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"side-effects-of-amoxicillin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of amoxicillin<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin is not used to treat gonorrhea. However, there are some common side effects of amoxicillin to be aware of. Typical<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a685001.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> amoxicillin side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temporary tooth discoloration, typically browning, graying, or yellowing of the teeth<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are treated for gonorrhea, you will likely be treated with an intramuscular ceftriaxone injection. These<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a685032.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ceftriaxone injections may cause side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain, tenderness, warmth, or a firm spot at the site of the injection site<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When exercising, you may experience shortness of breath or weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach and diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-best-antibiotic-to-cure-gonorrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best antibiotic to cure gonorrhea?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, amoxicillin is almost never used to treat gonorrhea. \u201cThe best and preferred antibiotic for gonorrhea is ceftriaxone due to its high effectiveness and the widespread antibiotic resistance that has made drugs like amoxicillin obsolete in treating this infection,\u201d Dr. January explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Dr. Mandal notes, this recommendation aligns with the current guidelines from the CDC, which recommend intramuscular ceftriaxone. \u201cIt is crucial to adhere to these guidelines to ensure successful treatment and reduce the spread of resistant strains,\u201d she emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, although intramuscular ceftriaxone is the preferred gonorrhea treatment, alternative regimens may be used at times. According to Dr. Mandal, these include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ceftizoxime intramuscularly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cefoxitin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefoxitin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intramuscularly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cefotaxime intramuscularly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cefixime\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cefixime<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If patients have had allergic reactions to cephalosporins, then a combination of oral azithromycin plus intramuscular gentamicin may be used to treat gonorrhea, Dr. Mandal says.
