They work together to decrease appetite and control cravings, which helps with long-term weight management in people with obesity. However, like most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2014\/200063s000lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight-loss drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Contrave works best alongside lifestyle changes, including a reduced-calorie diet and exercise. That means avoiding certain foods\u2014like fatty or sugary items\u2014while prioritizing others can help make this medication more effective and minimize your side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-foods-to-avoid-with-contrave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 foods to avoid with Contrave<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would advise any patient taking Contrave or any other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-weight-loss-pills\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight-loss medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to maintain a balanced diet without restricting any food group,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/texasdiabetes.com\/about-us\/our-doctors\/ishita-prakash-patel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ishita Prakash Patel, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified endocrinologist at Texas Diabetes and Endocrinology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, while you don\u2019t need to cut out entire food <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">groups<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.realtalkrealfood.com\/info.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angela Ginn-Meadow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RD, CDE, a registered dietitian, and certified diabetes educator, recommend limiting a few specific foods, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-processed-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Processed foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Processed foods do nothing to help people lower their body weight or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/obesity-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high BMI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThey contain empty calories, high amounts of refined sugars and sodium, as well as endocrine-disrupting chemicals,\u201d says Dr. Patel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plenty of research suggests that regularly eating processed foods\u2014fast food, potato chips, pastries, and other packaged snacks\u2014is bad for your health. One<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionj.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12937-020-00604-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that included more than 334,000 individuals linked ultra-processed food consumption to a heightened risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity. Ultimately, these foods will undermine the efficacy of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/contrave\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while also triggering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/contrave\/what-is#side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrave side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nausea and an upset stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-caffeine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Caffeine<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bupropion, one of the active ingredients in Contrave, has the potential to cause seizures. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29414557\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that caffeine can also increase the risk of seizures in susceptible people. Given that, Ginn-Meadow recommends avoiding caffeine while on Contrave. That means severely limiting or cutting out caffeinated beverages such as coffee, soda, and energy drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-fatty-or-greasy-foods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Fatty or greasy foods<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrave should never be taken with a high-fat meal. Doing so can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4771085\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the risk of seizures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on this medication. But even if you take a morning dose of Contrave, it\u2019s a good idea to avoid greasy or fatty foods for the rest of the day. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConsuming foods high in fat can increase the likelihood of experiencing nausea,\u201d explains Ginn-Meadow.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/fats\/saturated-fats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods high in saturated fats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also detrimental to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/heart-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/obesity-and-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> efforts. In general, eggs are considered a healthy source of animal fat and protein, but it might be a good idea to decrease consumption while taking Contrave because of their high fat content\u2014about<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/748236\/nutrients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5 grams of fat per egg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-foods-high-in-refined-sugar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Foods high in refined sugar<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid sugary foods like candy and cake, as well as sugary drinks like soda and sweetened lattes while taking Contrave. Sugar does not directly interact with this drug, but high-sugar foods and beverages introduce empty calories into your daily diet.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6959843\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also shows a link between sugar consumption and obesity or being overweight. This weight-loss medication is an adjunct treatment option alongside a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heart-healthy-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and exercise. \u201cConsume a diet rich in protein, whole grains, fiber, fruits, vegetables, and polyunsaturated fats,\u201d says Dr. Patel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an individual on Contrave has a weight-related condition such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type 2 diabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/high-cholesterol-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high cholesterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s important to understand that this drug is only for weight loss\u2014not for other medical conditions. Fortunately, foods recommended on Contrave overlap with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/diabetes-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foods that help stabilize blood sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Given that, you should aim to fill your plate with a variety of whole foods, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetables<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-sugar fruits, such as strawberries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lean proteins, such as chicken and fish<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whole grains, such as oatmeal and brown rice<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low-fat dairy, such as low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line: Diet plays a major role in being overweight or obese. \u201cUse Contrave as a way to help you kickstart your weight loss journey, but develop better habits so that that weight loss may be maintained naturally, without medication, if possible,\u201d says Dr. Patel.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-drink-alcohol-while-taking-contrave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you drink alcohol while taking Contrave?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a good idea to limit or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/alcohol-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while taking Contrave. There are a few reasons for this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Potential for adverse reactions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to the FDA drug label, there have been a few cases of neuropsychiatric events (NPEs), a term that could refer to psychosis, seizures, mood changes, and more, when mixing alcohol with Contrave.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reduced alcohol tolerance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antiobesity drugs like Contrave can make a person more sensitive to alcohol. Feeling the effects of alcohol more quickly than usual could lower inhibitions and increase cravings and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21951371\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sedation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> related to drinking.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Increased risk of hypoglycemia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Weight-loss drugs can increase the chance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/low-blood-sugar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/selfcare-instructions\/diabetes-and-alcohol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excessive alcohol consumption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Combining the two increases the risk of dangerously low blood sugar.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Higher calorie consumption: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to combine Contrave use with a healthy diet. Drinking alcohol tends to stimulate appetite and result in higher consumption of empty calories.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"gastrointestinal-side-effects-of-contrave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal side effects of Contrave<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many weight loss drugs, Contrave can cause gastrointestinal side effects. The most common GI-related <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/contrave-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects caused by Contrave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are nausea and constipation. In contrast, 19% of users reported constipation, and about 11% experienced vomiting. Contrave\u2019s suppression of appetite can contribute to constipation if individuals start drinking less water because they feel full so quickly. Tips for managing nausea and constipation include drinking lots of water and eating small portions of bland foods (such as crackers or dry toast) until you feel well enough to tackle a whole meal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTalk to your doctor if you have any side effects on the medication, as with any other medication,\u201d says Dr. Patel. The risk of side effects, including serious side effects, varies depending on dosage, other health conditions, and drug interactions with other medications. A healthcare professional can offer medical advice on the best <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter medications, supplements, or remedies for gastrointestinal discomfort<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or other Contrave side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/contrave\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not right for everyone. Breastfeeding mothers and those with a history of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/eating-disorder-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (anorexia or bulimia) should not take Contrave.
