But when you roll out of bed and your legs or back scream at you, your first thought might be to grab the ibuprofen. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a popular pain reliever for everyone from Olympic champions to people who slept in an awkward position\u2014but does it truly work for sore muscles?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen might help ease some of the muscle pain that comes after workouts, but it might not always be the best or most effective way. Here\u2019s why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ibuprofen-help-with-sore-muscles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does ibuprofen help with sore muscles?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is relatively safe to take ibuprofen or other NSAIDs for muscle soreness, and might be highly effective too, depending on the situation. For example, it\u2019s FDA approved to treat soreness and joint pain from inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC1755112\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows it\u2019s effective in the short-term<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the long-term, however, NSAIDs like ibuprofen are often only one part of the solution. For chronic conditions, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/wrightphysicaltherapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryan Wright, DPT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, physical therapist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wrightpt.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright Physical Therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, recommends \u201ctreatment plans that focus on targeted exercise, lifestyle changes, and physical therapy. Ibuprofen should only be used occasionally to control flare-ups under a doctor&#8217;s guidance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body aches can also come from infections like the flu or the common cold. In these cases, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/why-does-the-flu-cause-body-aches\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen is a viable treatment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it comes with the bonus of reducing fevers too, if you have one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When dealing with pain from musculoskeletal injuries, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/afp-community-blog\/entry\/new-guideline-for-managing-acute-pain-from-musculoskeletal-injuries.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the American College of Physicians recommends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> NSAIDs as a first-line intervention, and recent studies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0363546517697957?journalCode=ajsb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this one from 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> support this claim\u2014at least for short-term treatment. This largely applies to acute muscle pain and inflammation, specifically from injuries or surgery, since NSAIDs are a preferable alternative to opioids, which can lead to abuse and addiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some have expressed concern that NSAID use may actually inhibit the healing process. These drugs work by reducing the production of lipids called prostaglandins, which contribute to inflammation, pain, and blood clotting. The general concern is that these lipids also contribute to muscle healing. There is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6016595\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conflicting evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on whether it slows bone healing, and some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aquila.usm.edu\/fac_pubs\/20595\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on its inhibition of muscle recovery, but researchers say more data is necessary to make a definitive claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multifaceted treatment\u2014which may or may not include NSAIDs\u2014is often more effective for recovery. \u201cIn my clinic, we use a combination of manual therapy, targeted stretches, and therapeutic exercise to speed healing and prevent re-injury,\u201d says Wright.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"does-ibuprofen-help-with-sore-muscles-from-working-out\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does ibuprofen help with sore muscles from working out?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen is so prevalent in the athletic and exercise communities that it\u2019s earned the nickname \u201cvitamin I.\u201d However, scientific communities have less confidence about its effectiveness for relieving delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). This type of soreness \u201ccan occur when a person performs a vigorous new exercise, or increases weight\/repetitions too quickly,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.columbia.edu\/us\/ny\/new-york\/farah-hameed-md-51-west-51st-street\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Farah Hameed, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, associate chair for the Department of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.columbia.edu\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia University Irving Medical Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It \u201cdoesn\u2019t happen immediately and can in some cases take 24-72 hours for symptoms to peak.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some older studies\u2014like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/10905297_The_Effects_of_Ibuprofen_on_Delayed_Muscle_Soreness_and_Muscular_Performance_After_Eccentric_Exercise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this one from 2003<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014have concluded that ibuprofen can relieve exercise-induced soreness in the short term. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.udel.edu\/coe-engex\/2018\/03\/13\/no-pain-no-gain-stop-taking-those-nsaids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, however, has found that it\u2019s only marginally better (if at all) than a placebo.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But long-term use might come with some risks. \u201cSome studies have suggested that it might be problematic to use NSAIDs for DOMS due to the fact that these medications may impair the adaptive response to exercise if used chronically,\u201d Dr. Hameed says. \u201cThere is no current evidence to suggest, however, that intermittent and\/or occasional use of NSAIDs for pain would be detrimental. If the symptoms of DOMS are severe and not happening frequently, it would be safe and potentially effective to use NSAIDs to help with symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many athletes, particularly endurance athletes, swear by ibuprofen as a pre-competition ritual. Some people claim it can reduce soreness and even improve performance, but research says otherwise. Studies have shown that preemptive ibuprofen hasn\u2019t demonstrated an ability to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1440244024000501\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent DOMS either<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for its effect on performance, some studies found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdnsciencepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1139\/apnm-2018-0432?__hstc=74603853.2b9e7a3df9048a4b09fef168eb98b853.1727889386284.1727889386284.1727889386284.1&amp;__hssc=74603853.1.1727889386284&amp;__hsfp=3977887954&amp;_gl=1*3pvewx*_gcl_au*MTg0MTgzMTc0NC4xNzI3ODg5Mzg2#.W_2ANttKjIU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it offered no benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7188752\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">others were inconclusive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"benefits-of-taking-ibuprofen-for-sore-muscles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of taking ibuprofen for sore muscles<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So why, then, would you take ibuprofen when you\u2019re sore? It does have a few appealing benefits for anyone dealing with muscle pain:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>It reduces inflammation: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen\u2019s primary function is decreasing inflammation, which is often a cause for soreness\u2014particularly with conditions like arthritis.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>It works fast: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically, oral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-it-take-for-ibuprofen-to-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen starts working in about 20\u201330 minutes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so you won\u2019t have to wait long for sweet relief.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>It\u2019s not addictive: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One common drug for acute muscle pain after injury or surgery is opioids, but opioid addiction is an epidemic. NSAIDs provide a safer, non-addictive alternative.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>It\u2019s available over the counter: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes it easily accessible and fairly inexpensive.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"drawbacks-of-taking-ibuprofen-for-sore-muscles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drawbacks of taking ibuprofen for sore muscles<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as we\u2019ve already mentioned, ibuprofen isn\u2019t always the best option for muscle soreness. Here are some of its most notable drawbacks.\u00a0<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>It has side effects: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common are gastrointestinal reactions like nausea, heartburn, and diarrhea.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>It might affect kidney function: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8313037\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSAIDs have been linked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to acute kidney injury (AKI), tubulointerstitial nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2017\/07\/pain-reliever-linked-to-kidney-injury-in-endurance-runners.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study on endurance runners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, those who took ibuprofen before a race had an 18% higher rate of kidney injury.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>It might cause heart issues: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2005, the FDA issued a warning that taking NSAIDs could increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. And in 2015, they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-drug-safety-communication-fda-strengthens-warning-non-aspirin-nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">repeated and strengthened that warning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>You shouldn\u2019t take it long-term: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen is intended as a temporary, short-term solution. \u201cLong-term use of NSAIDs has been linked to serious gastrointestinal complications (such as peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding), cardiovascular disease, and renal failure,\u201d Dr. Hameed says.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has a pre-existing kidney, liver, stomach, or heart disease should talk to a doctor before taking ibuprofen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-the-best-painkiller-for-sore-muscles\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the best painkiller for sore muscles?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best treatment for sore muscles depends on the specific situation. For the pain associated with injuries or inflammatory conditions, NSAIDs like ibuprofen, aspirin, or naproxen can work well since they also treat inflammation, but people with heart or kidney problems may need to use other over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen (Tylenol) instead since they don\u2019t pose the same risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore muscles rarely ever require opioids or other prescription painkillers. However, sometimes doctors might recommend opioids, gabapentin, or other prescription <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/consumer-health\/in-depth\/pain-medications\/art-20046452\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medicine for post-surgical pain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, soreness from severe cases of arthritis may respond well to corticosteroids, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), or biologics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For post-workout soreness, it\u2019s often best to let it run its course or use other, non-medicine treatments. \u201cGenerally, muscle soreness should improve on its own over a few days,\u201d Dr. Hameed says. She recommends relative rest,\u00a0 stretching, and hydration or electrolyte repletion during the acute period, as well as cold baths, massage, heat therapy, compression sleeves, or topical analgesics as other treatments in the days following exercise.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe most effective approach is addressing the root cause of soreness through comprehensive treatment and education on prevention strategies, as opposed to relying solely on medication for an easy fix,\u201d adds Wright. \u201cIbuprofen has its place, but should be used judiciously and according to instructions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Injuries.
