For about 10% of people with a recent COVID-19 infection, fatigue can linger long after other common symptoms\u2014sometimes weeks or even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">months <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wwwnc.cdc.gov\/eid\/article\/30\/3\/23-1194_article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This sets it apart from many other viral, inflammatory illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s normal for people to experience a loss of energy as the body is fighting off an infection, but usually that energy comes back once we get better,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodsense.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle VenHuizen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MS, RDN, owner of Food Sense Nutrition. \u201cIt may be that high levels of inflammation produced by COVID-19 cause dysregulation in many systems of the body, especially in the heart and the brain, which could explain some of the fatigue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whatever the cause, people living with post-COVID fatigue may need some help getting their bodies back to normal functioning. One potential solution is increasing your vitamin intake: Dietary supplements are currently being studied for their effectiveness in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/counseling-long-covid-patients\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treating long COVID symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with vitamins such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">zinc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing some promise. Here\u2019s what we know about taking vitamins for post-COVID fatigue, including which ones are backed by science and what to look for when choosing a supplement.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-vitamins-for-post-covid-fatigue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 vitamins for post-COVID fatigue<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While experts are still learning about what triggers post-COVID fatigue in some people but not others, there are some things we\u2019ve learned since COVID-19 first appeared. One of those lessons is that deficiencies in some of the vitamins and minerals responsible for helping our bodies recover from illness can contribute to the risk of long COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cB vitamins, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and zinc are critical for energy production, brain function, and combating physical and mental fatigue,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nutritionresolution.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alyssa Simpson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, RDN, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digestive health dietitian in Phoenix, Arizona. \u201cSupplementation, especially for people with inadequate intakes, has been shown to improve fatigue and cognitive function, making these nutrients potentially beneficial in post-COVID recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-vitamin-b12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Vitamin B12<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-b12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin B12 coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simpson says B12 is critical for nerve health and red blood cell production, and a deficiency could contribute to lingering tiredness after COVID. A 2022 study found that both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/british-journal-of-nutrition\/article\/association-between-b-vitamins-and-the-risk-of-covid19\/ABB34ACDBF78F044643BC6417F844AB1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B12 and B5 had protective effects against COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infection, while a 2020 study found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7832811\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin B12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (when combined with vitamin D and magnesium) improved outcomes for elderly patients hospitalized with COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on some research, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10500256\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,000 milligrams of vitamin B12 daily<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the most commonly utilized dose for targeting COVID symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/too-much-B12-symptoms\">Can you take too much B12?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Vitamin D<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin D coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people think of vitamin D as the sunshine vitamin without realizing how big of an impact it has on our immune system. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamin-d-prescription\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low levels of vitamin D<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been linked to poor immune function and fatigue, which can inhibit your recovery from COVID, says Simpson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two studies have linked low vitamin D levels to long COVID.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">One study found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37051747\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">people with low vitamin D were more likely to have cognitive symptoms<\/a>\u00a0while experiencing long COVID, and another study found that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37566973\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D deficiency could delay recovery<\/a> from COVID.<\/span>\u00a0Meanwhile, a 2024 study found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39072958\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight weeks of high-dose vitamin D (60,000 IU weekly) improved fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a small number of participants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Magnesium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/magnesium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Magnesium coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitality101.com\/about-dr-teitelbaum\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacob Teitelbaum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an integrative physician and author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You Can Heal from<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long COVID<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, research shows that low magnesium levels are associated with a greater likelihood of severe COVID-19, which is in turn associated with a higher risk of long COVID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have also shown that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10215232\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">magnesium may have a protective effect as COVID runs its course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, decreasing inflammation, improving blood oxygen levels, and preventing cognitive symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One 2021 review of studies found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8540865\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">numerous connections in the scientific literature between magnesium deficiency and poor COVID outcomes.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It also highlighted several ways that low magnesium levels could directly contribute to long COVID or make it harder for someone to recover (magnesium deficiency commonly causes fatigue, weakness, muscle pain, and brain fog).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although specific studies looking at the effects of magnesium supplementation don\u2019t exist yet, it\u2019s clear there\u2019s a connection between magnesium deficiency and COVID severity, and even post-COVID symptoms specifically. The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) recommends that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/COVID19-HealthProfessional\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most adults get about 400 milligrams of magnesium per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, your intake can go higher than that for therapeutic reasons under a healthcare provider\u2019s supervision.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Zinc<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zinc coupons<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the other vitamins on this list, low zinc levels are linked to an increased risk of viral illnesses and COVID-19. According to the ODS, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/COVID19-HealthProfessional\/#h44\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people with zinc deficiencies may also be more likely to develop severe COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or have complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, a 2023 study of people with long COVID and a zinc deficiency found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2077-0383\/12\/5\/2062\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatigue was the most commonly reported symptom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggesting that maintaining the right amount of zinc may have a critical role in improving chronic fatigue symptoms after COVID. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2001037021000660\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 40 milligrams of zinc per day does not usually cause side effects, but participants in studies are often taking significantly higher amounts (between 200 and 400 milligrams). It\u2019s important to consult a healthcare professional before choosing the right amount of zinc to take for COVID fatigue.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"post-covid-fatigue-supplements-that-need-more-research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-COVID fatigue supplements that need more research<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to what we know about the effect of certain supplements on post-COVID fatigue, there is a lot more we\u2019re still learning. Some other supplements have shown some initial promise in research and may also be helpful for recovering from COVID infections. Still, more research is needed before experts can say whether they\u2019re useful.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Creatine:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This chemical helps your muscles create energy during exercise but can also help fuel cells in your brain and improve cognitive function. VenHuizen says it may help the body boost energy and recover from COVID-related fatigue, citing a 2023 study that found that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37970399\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six months of supplemental creatine improved symptoms of post-COVID fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a small population.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Iron:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Researchers have recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1036264\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">linked low iron levels after acute COVID infection to an increased risk of developing long COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leading experts to wonder if iron supplementation could help resolve some post-COVID symptoms like fatigue. However, at this point, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33087116\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are still only demonstrating a connection between anemia and COVID, and haven\u2019t yet advanced to studying whether or not taking iron supplements could help people recover from lingering fatigue.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Coenzyme Q10:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> As part of an antioxidant one-two punch, VenHuizen says pairing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mega-coq10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coenzyme Q10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with alpha lipoic acid supplements may be beneficial for post-COVID fatigue, pointing to a 2022 study showing that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9395797\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this combination reduced symptoms of fatigue in patients with long COVID after 60 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vitamin C:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Vitamin C is well known for its positive effects on the immune system. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9100929\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intravenous vitamin C therapy has been shown to reduce fatigue in recent studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diseases that cause fatigue, says VenHuizen, but it hasn\u2019t been studied in COVID yet. Another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36501014\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, looking at the effect of 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C when combined with the amino acid l-arginine, saw improvements in chronic fatigue symptoms in people with long COVID, VenHuizen adds, but far more research is needed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"are-post-covid-fatigue-supplements-beneficial\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are post-COVID fatigue supplements beneficial?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They can be, especially if you\u2019re at a higher risk for developing post-COVID fatigue or know you\u2019re deficient in certain vitamins and minerals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople with low levels of key nutrients like vitamins D, B12, C, and magnesium are most likely to benefit from supplements for post-COVID fatigue,\u201d says Simpson. \u201c[because] deficiencies in these nutrients can worsen fatigue and slow recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simpson adds that people with restricted diets, older adults, or individuals with conditions that affect nutrient absorption may experience the greatest relief from targeted supplementation. If you aren\u2019t sure whether you\u2019re deficient in any key nutrients, talk to a healthcare provider; VenHuizen says nutrient supplementation will be most beneficial if you identify and correct the areas where you\u2019re deficient.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, vitamins alone most likely won\u2019t help you feel like yourself again. Dr. Teitelbaum says nutritional support helps build the foundation for recovery from post-COVID fatigue. However, you still need to care for your body in other ways using what he calls the \u201cSHINE\u201d protocol: sleep, hormone regulation, immunity-building, nutrition, and exercise.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-avoid-vitamins-for-post-covid-fatigue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should avoid vitamins for post-COVID fatigue?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, the vitamins recommended for post-COVID fatigue are safe to take and can benefit most people. However, we always recommend seeking medical advice from your healthcare provider before taking any new supplements so you can be sure they won\u2019t interact with any of your existing medications or health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, too much of a good thing is possible, even with beneficial nutrients; Simpson says people who already meet the daily recommended levels of certain vitamins should avoid extra supplementation unless their healthcare provider advises it because excessive intake can cause unwanted side effects, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamins-overdose\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some vitamins pose risks at high doses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, if you\u2019ve been feeling fatigued for a long time, it\u2019s a good idea to check in with your provider anyway, says VenHuizen, so they can rule out other issues, such as chronic fatigue syndrome or cardiovascular problems, before helping you make a plan for safe supplementation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-to-look-for-in-vitamins-for-post-covid-fatigue\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to look for in vitamins for post-COVID fatigue<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be difficult to choose a supplement because they aren\u2019t regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), so you\u2019re relying on brand trustworthiness in the face of intense marketing to consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simpson recommends looking for high-quality supplements with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/vitamin-absorption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-absorbed formulations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as methylated B vitamins and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-d3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin D3<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
