On the other hand, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a685001.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria, which is why it is often prescribed to people needing antibiotics for common illnesses like pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-antibiotic-for-uti-in-females\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary tract infections (UTIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the stomach infection <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H. pylori<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although it may seem unusual to take more than one antibiotic at a time, this strategy can be helpful if the right drug combinations are carefully chosen and given together. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healor.com\/provider\/raj-singhmd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Singh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, primary care physician at HEALOR and medical director at RAREV Medical Spa in Las Vegas, using multiple antibiotics at once may increase the effectiveness of your treatment, helping you get better faster. It can also reduce the likelihood of bacteria-resistant infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what about taking doxycycline and amoxicillin together\u2014is this a good combination? While technically safe, it\u2019s usually not the best pairing, and healthcare providers generally avoid combining these two antibiotics. Here\u2019s what to know.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-can-t-you-take-doxycycline-and-amoxicillin-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why can\u2019t you take doxycycline and amoxicillin together?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTaking doxycycline and amoxicillin at the same time isn\u2019t unsafe, but it\u2019s not a preferred combination,\u201d Dr. Singh says. Lab studies have shown that tetracycline antibiotics (like doxycycline) can reduce the effectiveness of other antibiotics, particularly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/penicillins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penicillin-type antibiotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like amoxicillin). In other words, taking doxycycline and amoxicillin together could make it harder for the amoxicillin to work as effectively as it should.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does that mean these two antibiotics can never be prescribed at the same time? \u201cNot necessarily,\u201d says Dr. Singh. \u201cIf someone is on doxycycline for a month for a bad skin infection or acne, for example, and they get an ear infection, you could prescribe a short course of amoxicillin. It\u2019s not unsafe; we just don\u2019t know if the amoxicillin will be as effective as it could be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, you should make sure you communicate with your healthcare providers about all of the prescription drugs, including over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins, minerals, and herbs you\u2019re taking, especially if you need to be prescribed more than one antibiotic at the same time. This is especially important if you have multiple healthcare providers who may not be aware of what the others have prescribed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou could be prescribed one of these antibiotics by a specialist, like a dermatologist, and another by a primary care doctor,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepharmacistsguide.com\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joanna Lewis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., founder of The Pharmacist\u2019s Guide. \u201cIt\u2019s always important to let all providers know all of the medications you are taking so they can educate, monitor, and change therapy as needed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is also the possibility that being prescribed both of these antibiotics at once could increase the potential for some of the more common gastrointestinal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/amoxicillin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain,\u201d Dr. Lewis says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-doxycycline-or-amoxicillin-better\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is doxycycline or amoxicillin better?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/doxycycline-vs-amoxicillin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">differences between doxycycline and amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These drugs are often prescribed to treat different bacterial infections, so one isn\u2019t necessarily better than the other. The choice between them may depend on the type of infection your healthcare provider is treating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"drug-class\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug class\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic, and amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic. According to Dr. Singh, this means they work differently. \u201cDoxycycline is what we call a bacteriostatic antibiotic, which means it prevents the growth of bacteria, [while] amoxicillin is considered a bactericidal, which means it kills bacteria.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"uses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uses<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because these antibiotics treat infections differently, they\u2019re used for different conditions. Dr. Singh says doxycycline can be used for malaria and tick bites but is generally used mostly for skin conditions like acne. On the other hand, he says amoxicillin is used more for ear, nose, and throat infections, including bronchitis and strep throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482250\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amoxicillin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and doxycycline can cause mild gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. Both carry a risk for severe allergic reactions or anaphylaxis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doxycycline <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK555888\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is generally well-tolerated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to other drugs in its class and has limited evidence for causing serious adverse effects. However, it can cause additional mild side effects such as headaches, light sensitivity, itching or skin rashes, and, in rare cases, tooth discoloration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pregnancy-and-breastfeeding-risks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and breastfeeding risks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant and breastfeeding women should always consult with their healthcare provider about the safety of any OTC and prescription medications, natural supplements, and herbals. But generally, only one of these antibiotics is safe to use during pregnancy\u2014amoxicillin. \u201cDoxycycline is generally not recommended during pregnancy because it can impact the tooth and bone development of fetuses,\u201d Dr. Lewis says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For breastfeeding, amoxicillin is typically considered safe, but you should use caution when taking doxycycline. \u201cIf the therapy is short-term, it may be allowed by your provider, but some prefer to avoid doxycycline during breastfeeding as well,\u201d Dr. Lewis says.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-drug-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other drug interactions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amoxicillin generally has few drug interactions. Dr. Singh says amoxicillin is, overall, a highly safe antibiotic with few side effects and drug-drug interactions. The only interaction he flags is with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allopurinol-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allopurinol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is often prescribed to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gout-triggers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cTaking these two medications together increases the chance of having an allergic skin reaction, like a rash,\u201d Dr. Singh style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doxycycline, on the other hand, interacts with more medications, which Dr. Singh says include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Certain seizure medications:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/barbiturates\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbiturates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/carbamazepine\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbamazepine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can reduce the effectiveness of doxycycline because they activate enzymes that break down antibiotics quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blood thinners:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Taking doxycycline with drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/warfarin-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase the risk of
