It\u2019s designed to treat fevers and pain associated with common problems like headaches, muscle pain, toothaches, and menstrual cramps, but it goes one step further than pain relievers such as acetaminophen by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/acetaminophen-nsaids-over-the-counter-pain-relievers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helping reduce the inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s causing your pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people, however, may not consider taking ibuprofen when their seasonal allergies flare up\u2014after all, it\u2019s not an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-antihistamine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While ibuprofen can\u2019t prevent the immune response from causing your itchy eyes, runny nose, and sneezing, it can provide relief in other ways. Here\u2019s what to know about taking ibuprofen for allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-ibuprofen-help-with-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does ibuprofen help with allergies?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIbuprofen can reduce some of the symptoms associated with allergies, like headache and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-relieve-sinus-pressure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sinus pain or pressure from congestion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doctors.beaumont.org\/provider\/Kathleen+Dass\/286891\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kathleen Dass<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, allergist and immunologist based in Oak Park, Michigan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But ibuprofen won\u2019t address the cause of your allergies, whether that\u2019s pollen, pet dander, mold, dust, or something else entirely. To treat allergies, you\u2019ll need to employ a combination of strategies, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aafa.org\/allergies\/allergy-treatments\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One is to limit or avoid your allergy triggers altogether. The other is to take medications that either prevent the release of histamines in your body when you\u2019re exposed to an allergen (like an antihistamine) or directly stop the symptoms (like a decongestant for a stuffy nose). Ibuprofen can\u2019t do either of those things\u2014it can only relieve pain symptoms associated with allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-take-ibuprofen-with-allergy-medicine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you take ibuprofen with allergy medicine?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn general, ibuprofen isn\u2019t known to interact with common OTC allergy medications,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mytoolboxgenomics.com\/about-us\/erika-gray\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erika Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., cofounder of Toolbox Genomics. In fact, she notes that diphenhydramine (an antihistamine that\u2019s the active ingredient in Benadryl) is sometimes combined with ibuprofen or acetaminophen in certain cold and allergy medications. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil-pm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil PM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-pm#coupons-prices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin PM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combine ibuprofen and diphenhydramine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although ibuprofen doesn\u2019t interact with allergy medications, you still have to be careful of exceeding the recommended dosage, especially with those combination medications. For example, if Motrin PM is your choice of ibuprofen, you should be aware of the fact that it contains diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl. So, taking Motrin PM and Benadryl together could put you over the recommended dosage of diphenhydramine. Similarly, Advil Allergy Sinus is an allergy medication that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=ecd6ea11-8b34-01b4-cbd9-901ba7a8f6e2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contains 200 milligrams (mg) of ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so taking additional ibuprofen with it may put you over the maximum recommended dosage of ibuprofen, depending on your age and weight. Always consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist before combining medication. They can tell you how much is safe to take together.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button sc-external-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/allergies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allergy Medicine Coupons &amp; Resources<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ibuprofen-dosage-for-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen dosage for allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to take ibuprofen for allergies, make sure you follow the standard dosing directions or the directions provided on the package. Because ibuprofen doesn\u2019t interact with common OTC allergy medications, you don\u2019t need to adjust your dose if you\u2019re also taking something like Benadryl, for example. The exception is if you\u2019re taking a combination drug, as mentioned earlier. For example, if you\u2019re taking ibuprofen together with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil-allergy-sinus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil Allergy Sinus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you need to limit how much total ibuprofen you\u2019re taking to avoid too much at once.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Dass, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the right dosage of ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is dependent primarily on age and weight. But in young children, body temperature (i.e., how high their fever is) may also determine the dose. If you need to know how much ibuprofen to give a child between the ages of 6 months and 2 years old,\u00a0 contact your child\u2019s healthcare provider, who will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/ibuprofen-oral-route\/description\/drg-20070602\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">calculate the right dosage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on their age, weight, and symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, children under 6 months old shouldn\u2019t take ibuprofen. Children 2 years and older can take the appropriate amount based on their body weight. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a helpful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-home\/medication-safety\/Pages\/Ibuprofen-for-Fever-and-Pain.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chart for calculating the correct dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For adults and children 12 years and older, Dr. Dass says the usual dosage of ibuprofen is 200\u2013400 mg every 4\u20136 hours, as needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ibuprofen-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though ibuprofen is an OTC medication, it still carries risks, although Dr. Gray says that appropriate, infrequent use of ibuprofen usually doesn\u2019t cause any side effects. But if you take this medication regularly or in higher dosages, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects of ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartburn and gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although less common, there are also severe side effects that can occur with ibuprofen use, including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swelling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomiting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruising or bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itching or rash<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kidney or liver damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-take-ibuprofen-for-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not take ibuprofen for allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people shouldn\u2019t take ibuprofen for any reason, including allergies. If you have a known hypersensitivity to ibuprofen or any NSAIDs and have experienced anaphylactic reactions or serious skin reactions, Dr. Gray says you should not take ibuprofen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should also avoid ibuprofen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/11086-non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-medicines-nsaids\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and other NSAIDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or consult with a healthcare provider first) if you have any of the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of liver or kidney disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acid reflux<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inflammatory bowel disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A history of stroke or heart attack<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bleeding disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unmanaged diabetes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You also shouldn\u2019t take NSAIDs like ibuprofen if you\u2019re pregnant or plan to become pregnant.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"alternatives-to-ibuprofen-for-seasonal-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatives to ibuprofen for seasonal allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to treat pain\u2014like headache or sinus pain\u2014caused by allergies but can\u2019t take ibuprofen or NSAIDs, Dr. Gray says you may be able to take acetaminophen (like Tylenol) instead. It can help relieve pain but isn\u2019t in the same class of medications as ibuprofen, so it may be safer for you to take. However, if you aren\u2019t sure which type of pain reliever is right for you based on your existing medical conditions, check with a healthcare provider first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are good for treating allergy symptoms at the source, but Dr. Gray says they won\u2019t relieve symptoms of pain. You may need to combine medications if you\u2019re experiencing a headache or sinus pain due to allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, other options recommended by the AAFA for treating allergy symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal corticosteroid sprays, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nasacort-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasacort<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral decongestants, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-sinus-congestion-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal decongestant sprays, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/afrin-12-hour\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (not to be used more than three days in a row)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical hydrocortisone or diphenhydramine to relieve skin itching<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye drops containing ketotifen or olopatadine, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zaditor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zaditor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alaway\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alaway<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pataday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pataday<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-tell-whether-you-have-allergies-or-a-cold\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to tell whether you have allergies or a cold<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Dass, colds are triggered by the body\u2019s immune response to a virus, but allergies are triggered by the body\u2019s immune response to airborne allergens in the environment, such as pet dander, pollen, and dust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaaai.org\/tools-for-the-public\/conditions-library\/allergies\/colds-allergies-sinusitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold symptoms share similarities with allergy symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it can be difficult to tell the difference between the two. \u201cStuffy nose, runny nose, and sneezing, for example, can happen with both colds and allergies,\u201d Dr. Dass says. But she points out that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-allergies-cause-sore-throat\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throat and fever are symptoms usually more associated with viral illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while itchy or puffy eyes are usually associated with allergies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about coughing? It depends on whether or not you have asthma, according to Dr. Dass.
