There are many forms and ways to use calendula, such as calendula oil, ointment, tincture, tea, and more. Here, we take a look at the potential benefits of calendula tea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"6-health-benefits-of-calendula-tea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 health benefits of calendula tea<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of the research on calendula involves calendula extract ingested orally or applied topically in the form of lotions, salves, and so on. The skin health benefits of calendula have been widely studied\u2014it may soothe rashes, sunburns, and skin conditions like eczema, for example. Calendula may also offer other benefits when consumed in herbal teas. Here\u2019s what we do know about the potential benefits of calendula tea.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-provides-antioxidants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Provides antioxidants<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antioxidants are substances that neutralize free radicals\u2014unstable molecules that can contribute to inflammation and disease. Plants, including calendula flowers, are potent sources of antioxidants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe dried flowers, which are used to make calendula tea, are known to contain high amounts of antioxidants,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wholeisticliving.com\/about-me\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenna Volpe, RDN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an Austin-based dietitian. Specifically, they\u2019re rich in various types of antioxidants, including terpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, and volatile oils, according to one<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10142266\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These antioxidants can have numerous health benefits. \u201cThe antioxidants in calendula tea sequester free radicals, preventing cell damage and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-reduce-inflammation-in-the-body-fast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Volpe says. \u201cRegularly drinking calendula tea may promote healthier cells and help you maintain overall wellness,\u201d adds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wellbridge.org\/contributors\/edmond-hakimi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edmond Hakimi, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified internal medicine physician in Calverton, New York.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3689330\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One animal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that calendula can help fight oxidative stress. The herbal medicine reduced oxidative stress and brain damage in rats, suggesting that calendula may also have neuroprotective benefits. However, this research hasn\u2019t been confirmed in human trials.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-reduces-inflammation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Reduces inflammation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows that calendula tea has potent anti-inflammatory properties. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10492899\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that calendula tea had stronger anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects than the control groups. Calendula tea could potentially soothe problems like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-a-sore-throat-last\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sore throats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or digestive issues, Dr. Hakimi says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volpe says calendula can also reduce skin inflammation when applied topically in the form of a tincture. Research shows that it reduces dermatitis in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4665477\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> patients undergoing radiation treatment. Because calendula extract may offer skin health benefits like wound healing, it\u2019s sometimes found in skincare products, such as diaper rash cream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calendula&#8217;s anti-inflammatory benefits have mainly been studied for topical uses. However, calendula tea may benefit those with inflammatory digestive conditions like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibd-vs-ibs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritable bowel diseases (IBD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digestivereset.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inna Melamed, Pharm.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a functional medicine practitioner and pharmacist in Manalapan, New Jersey. In one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26831607\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">animal study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking calendula by mouth and using it as an enema showed promise in helping heal ulcerative colitis in rats. However, more studies involving people are needed to understand potential benefits in humans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3-possesses-antimicrobial-properties\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Possesses antimicrobial properties<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties top the list of calendula\u2019s health benefits, but the plant may also have antimicrobial properties. In other words, it can kill or prevent the growth of microorganisms like bacteria, potentially making it useful for treating certain infectious diseases. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37959765\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that it significantly protects against Staphylococcus aureus (staph) bacteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The antimicrobial properties of calendula were confirmed in one<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28011127\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Volpe says, noting that researchers used a water extraction method, which is essentially the same as making tea. However, the extracts in the study were not consumed by humans; they were tested in the lab by placing them on agar plates with germs to see if they could stop microbial growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calendula, as an antimicrobial agent, may also be useful in oral health treatments. When used in mouthwash, for example, it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21986652\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to have mild antimicrobial activity by preventing microbial adherence to sutures, Volpe explains. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24554883\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, calendula mouthwash effectively reduced plaque and gingivitis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-may-have-anticancer-activity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. May have anticancer activity<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22899374\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researchers studied and compared marigold (calendula) and chamomile tea, looking closely at the effects on cancer cells and tumors. The calendula tea was more potent than chamomile tea in targeting cancer cells and showed promise as an antitumor agent, particularly in melanoma cancer. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32039173\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that calendula may have potential antitumor effects in pancreatic cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this doesn\u2019t mean that calendula is a proven cancer treatment. It was traditionally used to treat an upset stomach or stomach ulcers, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/health-library\/herb\/calendula\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mount Sinai<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIts gentle antispasmodic properties can relax the digestive tract and relieve minor symptoms like gas or cramping,\u201d Dr. Hakimi explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a nice, natural option for anyone with mild tummy troubles.\u201d While there isn\u2019t much research on this, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4600869\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrated how calendula can alleviate inflammation of the digestive tract.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-possesses-antifungal-properties\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Possesses antifungal properties<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calendula may also have antifungal effects. It kills or stops the growth of fungi. When tested against strains of fungi, calendula <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22789794\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was shown to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have excellent antifungal activity. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3768360\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, calendula was effective against 23 strains of fungi. It\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27880086\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also been shown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to improve vaginal yeast infections when applied topically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fungi can affect both the outside and inside of the body. Many people know about skin infections like ringworm and athlete\u2019s foot. However, fungi can also cause more serious infections inside the body. While calendula is known to have antifungal effects, it\u2019s not clear if drinking calendula tea can help fight these internal infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"calendula-tea-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calendula tea side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As with other herbal teas, there may be side effects of drinking calendula tea. However, it\u2019s generally safe to consume when enjoyed in moderation, Dr. Hakimi says. Side effects of calendula are rare but do exist, he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects of calendula tea may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleepiness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slowed breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergic reactions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since calendula tea has mild sedative effects, it\u2019s best to avoid drinking it before performing activities that require alertness, Dr. Hakimi says. For example, it may not be safe to consume it before driving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s also the risk of skin irritation when applied topically, Dr. Hakimi says. Though calendula tea is typically ingested, some people may apply the tea bags or tea itself to the skin to reap the topical benefits. Before applying calendula to large areas of skin, Dr. Hakimi recommends performing a simple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aad.org\/public\/diseases\/eczema\/types\/contact-dermatitis\/patch-testing-rash\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patch test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially in those with sensitive skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"is-calendula-tea-safe-for-everyone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is calendula tea safe for everyone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral and topical uses of calendula are generally safe for most people. However, some people may need to use extra caution or avoid it altogether<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people may have an allergic reaction to calendula tea\u2014particularly those with allergies to plants in the same family. \u201cYou might want to skip calendula to avoid an allergic reaction if you\u2019re allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family, such as daisies, ragweeds, and chrysanthemums,\u201d Dr. Hakimi says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also advised to avoid calendula because there isn\u2019t enough research ensuring its safety. \u201cDrinking calendula tea has traditionally been used to stimulate menstruation, which may affect pregnancy,\u201d Dr. Hakimi says. It could also increase the risk of miscarriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTalking to your healthcare provider before drinking calendula tea is a smart move if you\u2019re taking any medications or managing health conditions,\u201d Dr. Hakimi says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calendula tea, also known as pot marigold, is a flowering plant used in herbal remedies for hundreds of years.
