Keep reading to learn more about this popular medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ibuprofen-ingredients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen ingredients<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are various brand-name and generic over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription products that contain ibuprofen as an active ingredient (the ingredient in a medication that makes it work), keep in mind that all medications also contain inactive ingredients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-approvals-and-databases\/inactive-ingredients-approved-drug-products-search-frequently-asked-questions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inactive ingredient<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is any ingredient in a medication other than the active ingredient. For example, Motrin, Advil, and store-brand ibuprofen all contain ibuprofen as the active ingredient, but they may differ in their inactive ingredients. While the inactive ingredients generally do not affect most people, certain individuals may need to be more aware of inactive ingredients due to allergies, sensitivities, or certain medical conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen was initially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK542299\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patented in 1961<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it has been around for many years. There are several different ways to classify medicines within the NSAID group of drugs. One way that used to be popular was to classify NSAIDs by their chemical makeup. Ibuprofen was among the NSAIDs derived from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7347500\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">propionic acid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. All NSAIDs have an anti-inflammatory effect, but acetaminophen does not.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ibuprofen-side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen side effects\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a682159.html#\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">common side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of ibuprofen include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constipation\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nervousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not a full list of side effects. NSAIDs can also cause stomach problems, such as bleeding, ulceration (sores), and perforation (holes) of the stomach or intestines, which can cause death. Ibuprofen should not be used before or after a surgery called coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, ibuprofen can cause serious allergic or skin reactions. Some reactions may also affect the organs. Get emergency medical help if you have hives, trouble breathing, swelling, fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple rash, or blistering or peeling skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen can cause or worsen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hypertension-treatments-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (high blood pressure). If you have high blood pressure, ask your healthcare provider if you need to monitor your blood pressure while taking ibuprofen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking NSAIDs for a long time can cause renal (kidney) problems. You can discuss risks with your healthcare provider. You may be at greater risk if you take certain medications (such as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/diuretics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diuretic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ace-inhibitors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACE inhibitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are an older adult, or already have kidney problems, liver problems, or heart failure.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"who-should-not-use-ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should not use ibuprofen?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen is not safe for everyone. Before taking ibuprofen, check with a healthcare provider if you have any other medical conditions. You should not take ibuprofen if you:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are allergic to ibuprofen, aspirin, or any NSAID (including a reaction of asthma or hives)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have aspirin triad (people with all three conditions: asthma, aspirin allergy, and sinus problems with nasal polyps)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are having CABG surgery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have had a recent heart attack<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have severe heart failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have severe kidney problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, check with your healthcare provider before using ibuprofen. Typically, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-you-take-ibuprofen-while-pregnant\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not recommended during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, especially after 20 weeks of pregnancy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are certain people who may be able to take ibuprofen but should check with a healthcare provider first.
