Why? Hypertension increases your risk of heart disease and stroke, the leading causes of death in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many factors influence blood pressure, from dietary choices and physical activity levels to how well you manage stress. Maintaining proper hydration is particularly important. Keep reading to find out how drinking water helps lower blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-drinking-water-lower-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can drinking water lower blood pressure?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking water can indeed help normalize blood pressure, says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raj Dasgupta, MD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified pulmonologist and professor at the University of Southern California. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are dehydrated, it can also help lower blood pressure. Although drinking water is not a hypertension treatment, it supports healthier blood pressure levels, whether you have hypertension or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10807041\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concluded that drinking six to eight cups of plain water daily may help prevent hypertension by regulating blood pressure. Drinking water may also mean that the patients are not drinking sodium-rich liquids, which can increase blood pressure. Similarly, drinking water can help raise blood pressure in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.1161\/01.cir.101.5.504\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individuals with hypotension (low blood pressure)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-impact-of-hydration-on-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The impact of hydration on blood pressure<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/theheartfoundation.org\/2019\/03\/08\/the-importance-of-water\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staying hydrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps regulate blood volume, supporting steady blood circulation and reducing strain on the heart, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncoa.org\/adviser\/authors\/brittany-ferri-phd-otr-l\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brittany Ferri, Ph.D., OTR\/L<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an occupational therapist and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplicityofhealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simplicity of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On the flip side, your blood volume drops when you\u2019re dehydrated, says Dr. Dasgupta. M<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aintaining healthy blood pressure ensures that oxygen and nutrients are delivered to every organ in the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/special-topics\/water-science-school\/science\/water-you-water-and-human-body\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your body weight is made up of water. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re dehydrated, your body\u2019s water supply is low, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncoa.org\/adviser\/authors\/raj-dasgupta-md\/\">Dr. Dasgupta<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Dehydration decreases your blood volume, leading to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/dehydration-and-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concentration of sodium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A buildup of sodium (called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441960\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypernatremia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can cause blood vessels to constrict, increasing vascular resistance\u2014which makes it harder for blood to flow through the circulatory system. As the heart must work harder to pump blood through narrower blood vessels, your blood pressure increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for how fast drinking water can lower blood pressure, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2908954\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research review and meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that noticeable improvements may occur within 30 minutes to an hour after consuming water, with initial changes to heart rate and blood pressure appearing in the first 15 to 20 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monitoring blood pressure is essential for assessing cardiovascular health and identifying potential health conditions.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wait at least 30 minutes after drinking water to check your blood pressure levels. Doing so allows the body sufficient time to respond. Consuming around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/pdf\/10.1161\/01.cir.101.5.504\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 ml<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (approximately two cups) of water is often enough to reduce blood pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/high-blood-pressure\/understanding-blood-pressure-readings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure readings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consist of two numbers written as a fraction. The top number\u2014systolic blood pressure\u2014measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number\u2014diastolic blood pressure\u2014measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats. For example, a reading of 120\/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury) indicates a systolic pressure of 120 and a diastolic pressure of 80. Normal systolic values are considered below 120, and normal diastolic values are below 80.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood pressure ranges can be categorized as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Normal:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> systolic &lt; 120 and diastolic &lt; 80<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Elevated<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: systolic &gt; 120 and diastolic &gt; 80<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hypertension Stage 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: systolic 130-139 or diastolic 80-89<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hypertension Stage 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: systolic \u2265 140 or diastolic \u2265 90<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"the-consequences-of-overhydration-on-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consequences of overhydration on blood pressure<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whereas staying hydrated keeps blood, urine, and stool flowing smoothly, Dr. Dasgupta emphasizes that drinking too much water can lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/17762-hyponatremia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hyponatremia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/water-intoxication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water intoxication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d an electrolyte imbalance that occurs when blood sodium levels drop too low. He says hyponatremic patients can present with headaches, nausea, confusion, seizures, and rarely coma. Excessive water intake should be taken seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-much-water-should-you-drink\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much water should you drink?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recommended daily amount of water for most adults is about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/news\/2004\/02\/report-sets-dietary-intake-levels-for-water-salt-and-potassium-to-maintain-health-and-reduce-chronic-disease-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.7 liters for women and 3.7 liters for men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (about 11 to 15 eight-ounce glasses of water) from all beverages and foods, says Ferri. \u201cFactors that may increase the need for water include hot or dry weather, physical activity, fever, or conditions that cause increased sweating or fluid loss,\u201d she points out. Dr. Dasgupta adds that there\u2019s no one-size-fits-all approach to hydration, as your age, medical conditions,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medications, and activity level influence your total daily water intake needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-other-drinks-can-help-lower-blood-pressure\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What other drinks can help lower blood pressure?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to water, research points to several other beverages that may aid in lowering blood pressure.
