Sultan, MD, psychiatrist and therapist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrative-psych.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Integrative Psych<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Columbia University, taking trazodone and Prozac together is usually safe, but it\u2019s important to understand the potential risks. \u201cBoth medications affect serotonin levels, so combining them carries a low but real risk of serotonin syndrome, especially at higher doses,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sultan adds that the risk may depend on the specific conditions being treated, whether it be depression or insomnia. For example, sometimes low doses of trazodone are prescribed for sleep, reducing the likelihood of it interacting adversely with Prozac, which is typically prescribed for mood stabilization. Your physician will help you figure out the best way to take these two medicines. \u201cAlways consult a healthcare provider before combining these medications,\u201d Dr. Sultan emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindpath.com\/staff\/julian-c-lagoy-md\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julian Lagoy, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified psychiatrist with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindpath.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindpath Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says that he prescribes these two medications together frequently without complications. \u201cGenerally, I prescribe trazodone in very low doses, primarily to be used as a sleeping aid,\u201d he says. \u201cI would be careful if you are giving high doses of trazodone with Prozac since the medication interaction risk is much higher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"benefits-of-taking-trazodone-and-prozac-at-the-same-time\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benefits of taking trazodone and Prozac at the same time<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several potential benefits to taking trazodone and Prozac together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, says Dr. Sultan, these two medications have different modes of action and produce different effects on the body. As such, they may benefit you in different ways. Prozac works by increasing serotonin levels in the body by inhibiting reuptake. On the other hand, trazodone, especially when prescribed in low doses, can work as a sedative. Trazodone has mild serotonin receptor modulation, Dr. Sultan explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, Prozac \u201cmay improve mood and energy levels,\u201d whereas trazodone \u201cmay alleviate insomnia or anxiety,\u201d Dr. Sultan describes. And who might wish to combine them? \u201cThis combination might appeal to patients needing both antidepressant and sedative effects,\u201d he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, people tend to turn to trazodone for its sleep-inducing effects. \u201cTrazodone is often prescribed off-label for sleep because it has hypnotic properties,\u201d says Mike McGrath, MD, board-certified psychiatrist and chief clinical officer of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theohanahawaii.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ohana Hawaii<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who adds that trazodone is quite effective at treating sleep issues. Many patients \u200bwho combine trazodone and Prozac find that they can effectively and simultaneously treat their depressive symptoms and their insomnia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"trazodone-and-prozac-risks-and-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trazodone and Prozac risks and interactions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest concern about taking trazodone and Prozac together is the risk of serotonin syndrome, a condition that occurs when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK482377\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too much serotonin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> circulates through the central nervous system. Although the risk exists with any medication that increases serotonin in the body, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uptodate.com\/contents\/serotonin-syndrome-serotonin-toxicity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs like Prozac are less likely to cause serotonin syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) like Marplan or Nardil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Trachman says that she frequently prescribes trazodone and Prozac together. \u201cThe only time I sent a patient to the emergency room for what I suspected was serotonin syndrome occurred when a different specialist added a prescription that interacted with those I had prescribed,\u201d she says, adding that, in general, mild serotonin syndrome is treatable, even if you develop it. \u201cThe management of serotonin syndrome is supportive care, i.e., lowering blood pressure and fluids for gastrointestinal symptoms,\u201d she describes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sultan agrees that though the risk is there for serotonin syndrome, the risk is low, and increases if you take larger-than-normal amounts. \u201cThe risk increases with higher doses or additional serotonergic medications,\u201d Dr. Sultan explains. Besides serotonin syndrome, Dr. Sultan warns against excessive sedation and cognitive impairment that may result after combining trazodone and Prozac. \u201cTrazodone\u2019s sedative effects may exacerbate drowsiness, particularly if fluoxetine heightens trazodone\u2019s effects,\u201d Dr. Sultan says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides dosage and other medication reactions, Dr. Sultan says that age and underlying medications are other factors to take into consideration when combining trazodone and Prozac. \u201cElderly patients or those with underlying cardiac conditions are at higher risk of QT prolongation, arrhythmias, or drug interactions,\u201d Dr. Sultan notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line? Always stay in close touch with your provider if you are taking trazodone and Prozac together, and never take them unless they were prescribed together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-long-after-taking-trazodone-can-you-take-prozac\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long after taking trazodone can you take Prozac?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no set recommendation regarding how to take trazodone and Prozac together.
