It can manifest at any age, and even though approximately 1 in 40 adults will develop OCD at some point in their lives, there are treatment options available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Adderall one of them? It\u2019s complicated. There are specific cases when it might help, but sometimes it can actually worsen OCD symptoms. We\u2019ve got all the important information for both situations below\u2014including side effects and Adderall alternatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"does-adderall-help-with-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Adderall help with OCD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For someone with just OCD and no other mental health conditions, Adderall isn\u2019t typically helpful. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/hrpjournal\/fulltext\/2015\/07000\/comorbidity_between_attention.2.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that stimulant medications like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritalin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can actually exacerbate OCD symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This might happen when OCD is misdiagnosed as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iocdf.org\/expert-opinions\/expert-opinion-ocd-and-adhd-dual-diagnosis-misdiagnosis-and-the-cognitive-cost-of-obsessions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the International OCD Foundation. Both conditions can affect attention and focus, have some similar symptoms, and affect the brain\u2019s frontostriatal system, so it can be difficult to get an accurate diagnosis. But while OCD stimulates activity in this system, ADHD reduces it, which is why Adderall isn\u2019t always a solution for OCD on its own and can compound the problem. However, according to psychiatrist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doximity.com\/pub\/cooper-stone-do\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Cooper Stone, DO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe overwhelming majority of patients with OCD will have a co-occurring psychiatric disorder,\u201d and \u201camong those co-occurring conditions, ADHD is among the most common. As a result, Adderall (and other stimulants) can be extremely effective and helpful in treating symptoms of ADHD.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAdderall is a stimulant that targets the frontal striatal area of the brain. ADHD and OCD happen because of abnormalities in that area but from different spectrums,\u201d Dr. David Hendricks, MD, assistant medical director at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mountainside.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mountainside<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adds. \u201cTo treat these co-occurring conditions together, It\u2019s important to treat the ADHD first, before tackling the OCD.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International OCD Foundation says some research suggests that one out of five children and one out of twelve adults who have ADHD also have OCD\u2014and these ADHD patients could benefit from Adderall treatment. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8149730\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain case studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown that psychostimulants may improve both ADHD symptoms and OCD for these patients, although there\u2019s still a risk that it could worsen the obsessive-compulsive symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-you-shouldn-t-take-adderall-for-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why you shouldn\u2019t take Adderall for OCD<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the biggest reasons why Adderall isn\u2019t a viable choice for people with obsessive-compulsive disorder by itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"it-can-make-symptoms-worse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can make symptoms worse<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall isn\u2019t FDA-approved for OCD treatment, and doctors don\u2019t prescribe it off-label either. That\u2019s largely because <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adderall-effects-on-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall\u2019s effects on the body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can worsen the symptoms of OCD. \u201cThe intrusive and unwanted obsessions associated with OCD can be a source of great anxiety and distress, which can be worsened by Adderall,\u201d Dr. Stone says. \u201cThe reason for this is that Adderall, being a stimulant, can commonly cause or contribute to anxiety as a side effect, thereby worsening the experience of the underlying condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, it boosts the brain\u2019s levels of dopamine and norepinephrine and affects the frontostriatal system, which is already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/psychiatry\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2019.00557\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overactive in people with OCD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Adderall use also increases focus, which might cause individuals to fixate on OCD-related intrusive thoughts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"side-effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides exacerbating symptoms, the use of Adderall also comes with the risk of various side effects. It\u2019s unclear how, exactly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> influence OCD, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7025764\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have demonstrated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their effectiveness in treating it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> TCAs work by increasing serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, and the most common one prescribed for OCD is clomipramine. In studies,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1883256\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it has shown safety and effectiveness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in reducing OCD symptoms.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are similar to SSRIs, but they also increase norepinephrine levels. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Psychiatry <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16669725\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could be an effective alternative to SSRIs for OCD, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/learn-from-us\/from-the-experts\/blog-posts\/consumer-professional\/medication-treatment-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional studies may be necessary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Atypical antipsychotics:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These medicines act on the brain\u2019s dopamine and serotonin receptors, and the main <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/atypical-antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atypical antipsychotic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prescribed for OCD is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/abilify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abilify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (aripiprazole). This is technically an off-label use, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3115673\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it\u2019s effective as part of a larger treatment plan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from medication, certain types of psychotherapy might also work well for treating OCD. In fact, they\u2019re often considered a first-line treatment. According to Dr. Stone, \u201cThe benefit of this approach is that it will not expose the patient to any medication side effects or run the risk of interacting with any other medications that may already be prescribed.\u201d Popular non-medication treatments include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This type of therapy focuses on raising our awareness of negative thought processes, behaviors, and actions, so we can change our responses\u2014and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3181959\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research has demonstrated its effectiveness in treating OCD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another model that has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6343408\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shown great promise in studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ERP is a type of CBT developed specifically for OCD. It involves slowly exposing the patient to situations or stimuli that may trigger compulsive responses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT): <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another type of CBT, ACT focuses on noting and accepting specific obsessive thoughts and feelings as they arise, and it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4300464\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might also be an effective treatment for OCD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But sometimes, the best treatment is a combination. \u201cFor those with more severe or disabling symptoms, it is typically recommended that medications and therapy be started simultaneously,\u201d Dr. Stone says. \u201cThis is more effective than either treatment modality used alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the prescribing doctor will make the call on which treatment is best for a particular patient.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Persistent thoughts.
