But the condition isn\u2019t just a childhood one. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chadd.org\/about-adhd\/overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014characterized by the inability to focus, impulsivity, poor time management, and restlessness\u2014affects adults, too. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/related-illnesses\/other-related-conditions\/adult-adhd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight million of them <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the United States alone. That\u2019s 4% of the adult population.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for ADHD often comes in the form of prescription stimulants, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritalin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amphetamine-dextroamphetamine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which work to boost the amount of active chemical messengers (such as dopamine and norepinephrine) in the brain, ideally leading to an increase in focus and attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what do stimulants mean for your social life? Are you going to have to exchange happy hour for Adderall, or is it safe to have a margarita now and then <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your need for the medication?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is some room for negotiation (maybe), depending on what your doctor recommends for you (and you alone), it is always best to err on the side of caution, says Jeff Fortner, Pharm.D., an associate professor at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAvoidance is ideal and if not, then moderation is critical,\u201d Dr. Fortner says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Otherwise, you could be opening the door to a serious drug-drug interaction and\/or other potentially dangerous complications, says Anna Lembke, MD, an addiction specialist at Stanford University and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journalofnursingregulation.com\/article\/S2155-8256(18)30057-7\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug Dealer MD: How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked and Why It\u2019s So Hard to Stop<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><b>Combining medication for ADHD and alcohol\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason the combo of Adderall and alcohol is so concerning, Dr. Lembke explains, has to do with the purpose and function of the two drugs. Alcohol is a downer. Stimulants are uppers. Put the two together and \u201cthe whole physiological system gets challenged and confused in a way that is potentially lethal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have the stimulants that are working to increase focus and activity in the brain, and alcohol has basically the opposite effect\u2014it dulls senses and decreases brain activity,\u201d says Dr. Fortner. \u201cSo (combining the two) masks the symptoms of alcohol so people feel less intoxicated than they really are, which can cause them to drink more than they should or normally would.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9507 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_101119_ADHD-1024x480.png\" alt=\"Chart illustrating the risk of mixing alcohol and meds\" width=\"604\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_101119_ADHD-1024x480.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_101119_ADHD-300x141.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_101119_ADHD-768x360.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_101119_ADHD-1536x720.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Mixup_Chart_101119_ADHD.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems can range from lack of impulse control and physical coordination to poor decision-making and even accidents, he says. And, since you aren\u2019t necessarily aware that you\u2019ve had too much to drink, alcohol poisoning\u2014which can cause nausea, vomiting, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing and seizures\u2014becomes a very real concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat is when it is time to call 911 and get emergency medical help,\u201d Dr. Fortner says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another problem is the fact that drinking alcohol while taking stimulants can perpetuate a cycle of ongoing excessive consumption, Dr. Lembke says, which is naturally problematic (for many reasons).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe combination fuels the problem of addiction,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adult-adhd-medication-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Your guide to adult ADHD treatment<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Everything in moderation, if you can handle it<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So is moderation even possible? Possibly, depending on the person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach patient is unique, but for many patients \u2026 having one or two alcoholic drinks spread as far as possible apart from their last dose of medication would likely be fine,\u201d Dr. Fortner says, explaining that this applies to people who are on ADHD medications only; not those who are taking them in conjunction with other medications (since those drugs could have other side effects and other drug-drug interactions).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, while this should never be done without talking to your healthcare provider first, in some cases it could be okay to occasionally forgo your stimulant in favor of a glass of wine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince stimulants work quickly and also leave the body relatively quickly, some people may be able to skip a dose if they plan to drink later in the day,\u201d Dr. Fortner says. Bear in mind that there are several extended-release ADHD medications\u2014always discuss with your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Lembke emphasizes that this can be risky in its own right and she urges people to think twice before skipping a prescribed dose of mediation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese medications are tweaking the system \u2026 so [if you skip a dose] there is no doubt you are triggering your own body\u2019s adrenal system and stress response.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, it\u2019s best to speak with your doctor or pharmacist about your own best options.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you think of ADHD, you probably think of hyperactive kids.
