Commonly referred to by the brand name Flagyl, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is available in various formulations, including oral tablets and capsules, as well as topical and vaginal forms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is part of a drug class called nitroimidazole <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antimicrobials<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Because it has so many uses, people often ask, Does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=86415209-5440-41da-abb8-e1a3d5051f91\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat many types of infections, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trichomoniasis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pelvic inflammatory disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial vaginosis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, skin infections, central nervous system infections, bone and joint infections, and many others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-metronidazole-be-used-to-treat-gonorrhea-or-chlamydia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlamydia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metronidazole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metronidazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlamydia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is not effective against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2022\/0400\/p388.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types of bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cause these infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gonorrhea-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Gonorrhea<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexually transmitted infection<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) caused by a type of bacteria called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neisseria gonorrhoeae<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">N. gonorrhoeae<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is very common, especially among <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescents<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and young adults 15 to 24 years of age. It can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/gonorrhea\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by vaginal, anal, or oral sex without a condom. It can also be transferred to a newborn during childbirth by an infected pregnant individual. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause infection in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genitals<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rectum, or throat. It is usually treated with a single injection of an antibiotic medicine called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ceftriaxone-sodium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ceftriaxone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/cephalosporins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cephalosporin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antibiotic).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/chlamydia-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Chlamydia<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by a type of bacteria called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlamydia trachomatis<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It can be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chlamydia\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spread<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the same ways as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlamydia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is usually treated with an oral antibiotic called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/doxycycline-hyclate-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/tetracyclines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tetracycline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> antibiotic).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-std-does-metronidazole-treat\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treat?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"trichomoniasis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trichomoniasis<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/trichomoniasis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trichomoniasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/trichomoniasis\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protozoan parasite<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trichomonas <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginalis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Many people with this condition do not have symptoms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trichomoniasis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in males and females. Pregnant women should not use it in the first trimester. For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trichomoniasis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both partners should consult a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a diagnosis and treatment plan. There are several ways to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pdr.net\/drug-summary\/?drugLabelId=2892#dosage-and-indications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trichomoniasis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metronidazole\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 grams (or 2,000 mg), which can be taken all at once as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">single dose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or divided into two doses of 1,000 mg each, taken on the same day<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">250 mg three times a day for seven days<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">375 or 500 mg twice daily for seven days<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will determine which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment regimen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is appropriate. Some people may need another course of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"pelvic-inflammatory-disease-pid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic inflammatory disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also be used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lower-right-side-pain-female\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pelvic inflammatory disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an infection of a woman\u2019s reproductive organs. It can be caused by certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexually transmitted diseases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlamydia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can also be caused by infections that are not sexually transmitted. It\u2019s important to note that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not directly treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlamydia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it can be used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which may occur as a complication of one of these infections. For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is generally prescribed at a dose of 500 mg twice daily, in combination with other medication as determined by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on the presence of other infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"bacterial-vaginosis-bv\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial vaginosis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BV)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bacterial-vaginosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial vaginosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BV) is a common <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/bacterial-vaginosis\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While it is not classified as an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> itself (and experts do not fully understand how sex and BV are related), people who do not use condoms, as well as those with multiple partners, have a higher risk of getting BV. BV infections can also increase the risk of getting other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/treatment-guidelines\/bv.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For BV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be prescribed to be taken by mouth, usually at a dose of 500 mg twice daily for seven days. Or, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vandazole\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal form of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used. With this formulation, the patient inserts one applicatorful of medicine vaginally once a day (usually at bedtime) for five days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"gonorrhea-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symptoms<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/gonorrhea\/about\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, symptoms of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may vary. People with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may have no symptoms or mild symptoms. Women may experience burning or pain while peeing, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal discharge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and bleeding or spotting between periods. Men may experience burning while peeing, discharge from the penis, and, less commonly, pain or swelling in the testicles. People with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rectal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infections who experience symptoms may have anal discharge, itching, soreness, bleeding, or painful bowel movements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both you and your partner(s) need to get treated for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Untreated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can spread and lead to various complications, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in women, which can lead to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infertility<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Untreated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also lead to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infertility<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in men, as well as other problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"recommended-treatments-for-gonorrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommended treatments<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/gonorrhea\/hcp\/clinical-care\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) recommends a one-time <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intramuscular<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injection (injection into a muscle) of the antibiotic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ceftriaxone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this treatment is not available, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recommends one dose of an oral antibiotic called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cefixime\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cefixime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT) is also recommended, allowing partners of a patient diagnosed with an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to receive treatment without a medical evaluation. For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the EPT is usually one dose of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cefixime<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlamydia<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cannot be ruled out, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will likely also prescribe a seven-day course of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doxycycline<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to both the patient and their partner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-quickly-does-gonorrhea-clear-up\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How quickly does <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> clear up?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After antibiotic treatment, it generally takes about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/4217-gonorrhea\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 to 14 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infection to clear up, although some people may have symptoms for longer. Your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will advise you how long you should avoid having sex (generally, for at least seven days) after treatment to avoid spreading the infection. Your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may recommend additional testing to make sure the infection is clear, so be sure to follow their instructions for treatment and keep all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follow-up<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appointments. They may also recommend a regular testing schedule, especially for people at higher risk, as part of an ongoing care plan. A regular testing schedule can allow for testing of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well as other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexually transmitted diseases<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/herpes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herpes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/hiv-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV infection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/syphilis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">syphilis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the only surefire way to avoid an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is abstinence, you can significantly reduce your risk of contracting <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by using condoms correctly every time you have sex and by being in a long-term relationship where both partners are monogamous and have tested negative for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is used for a variety of infections. Although it is not effective against <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">metronidazole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is commonly used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trichomoniasis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pelvic inflammatory disease<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PID<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial vaginosis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
