Ozempic is also sometimes prescribed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for a non-FDA-approved use) as a weight loss drug. With the popularity of glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/glp-1-agonists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GLP-1 agonists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) like Ozempic, you may have seen advertisements for compounded semaglutide. Although compounded semaglutide may be similar to Ozempic, it has not been tested for safety and efficacy in clinical trials and is not exactly the same. Continue reading to learn more about compounded semaglutide and how it compares to Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"an-overview-of-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An overview of semaglutide<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures FDA-approved semaglutide products, currently manufactures three medicines that contain semaglutide. They include the weekly injectable drugs Ozempic and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/wegovy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wegovy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the once-daily oral medicine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/rybelsus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wegovy is FDA-approved for weight loss and cardiovascular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/wegovy-heart-disease-fda-approval\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk reduction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/rybelsus-vs-ozempic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rybelsus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like Ozempic, is approved for Type 2 diabetes. There are no <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/when-will-ozempic-go-generic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA-approved generic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> versions of these three drugs, and there are no other FDA-approved semaglutide products.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-compounded-semaglutide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is compounded semaglutide<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/guidance-compliance-regulatory-information\/human-drug-compounding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compounded drug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a medication customized for an individual patient&#8217;s specific needs. For example, if a patient is prescribed a drug that\u2019s available in capsule form only, a compounding pharmacy may make that patient a liquid form of a drug. A compounded drug needs to be prepared by a licensed pharmacist (or under the supervision of a pharmacist) in a compounding pharmacy or facility. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in instances when compounding is legal, compounded drugs are not FDA approved, which means they have not been tested for safety, effectiveness, or quality control. That includes compounded semaglutide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, if a drug is commercially available in pharmacies, pharmacies are not allowed to compound the drug. However, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/compounding-when-drugs-are-fdas-drug-shortages-list\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA notes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that when there is a shortage of a particular drug, compounding may be permitted to ensure the patient has access to treatment. This is the case with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dps.fda.gov\/drugshortages\/activeingredient\/semaglutide-injection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">semaglutide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, On Feb. 21, 2025, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-clarifies-policies-compounders-national-glp-1-supply-begins-stabilize\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA announced that the semaglutide shortage was over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that compounding pharmacies need to stop making and selling semaglutide injection products that are copies of FDA-approved products (Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus). The deadline for state-licensed compounding pharmacies and physicians is April 22, 2025, and the deadline for outsourcing facilities is May 22, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ozempic-shortage\/\">Ozempic shortage<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"compounded-semaglutide-vs-ozempic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compounded semaglutide vs. Ozempic\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While both medicines contain semaglutide, they are not exactly the same. Let\u2019s review some of the similarities and differences between compounded semaglutide and Ozempic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ingredients\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingredients<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The active ingredient in Ozempic is semaglutide, also known as semaglutide base. On the other hand, compounded semaglutide may contain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/fda-alerts-health-care-providers-compounders-and-patients-dosing-errors-associated-compounded\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional ingredients<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/b-12\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vitamin B-12<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vitamin B-6, L-carnitine, and others. There is no data on the safety and efficacy of semaglutide in combination with these other ingredients. The FDA also notes that some compounding facilities use different salt forms of semaglutide (such as semaglutide sodium or semaglutide acetate) rather than semaglutide base. These salt forms are not exactly the same as the active ingredient in Ozempic and are not <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/fdas-concerns-unapproved-glp-1-drugs-used-weight-loss\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for use in compounding.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"forms-and-dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forms and dosage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=adec4fd2-6858-4c99-91d4-531f5f2a2d79\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ozempic is available in the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ozempic\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dosages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 mg per pen (with this pen, you can use a 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg dose)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 mg per pen (1 mg per dose)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 mg per pen (2 mg per dose)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you take Ozempic, you dial up the appropriate dose on the pen and inject it with a new needle once a week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With compounded semaglutide, various products are available, depending on the supplier. These options may include injectable products and noninjectable products, such as orally disintegrating tablets (tablets that dissolve in the mouth), sublingual tablets (tablets placed under the tongue to dissolve), or oral drops. For injected compounded semaglutide products, some suppliers may provide prefilled syringes, while others offer vials that contain multiple doses, requiring you to draw up each dose with a syringe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"safety-and-efficacy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety and efficacy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozempic has been tested in various clinical trials for safety and efficacy. In these trials, researchers find out important information such as side effects and how well the drug works. Taking compounded semaglutide poses multiple risks, including the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/human-drug-compounding\/fda-alerts-health-care-providers-compounders-and-patients-dosing-errors-associated-compounded\"><b>Dosing errors<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some compounded versions of semaglutide require you to measure and self-administer the doses yourself, leading to dosing errors and accidental overdose. Dosing errors can also lead to more severe side effects, which can last up to a few weeks, as semaglutide stays in the body for a long time. In some cases, patients needed medical attention or had to go to the hospital. Reports of adverse effects have included nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fainting, headache, dehydration, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gallstones-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gallstones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/pancreatitis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inflammation of the pancreas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dosing errors have also been found with compounded tirzepatide, which many companies offer as an alternative to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mounjaro\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mounjaro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zepbound\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zepbound<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Illegal sales<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The FDA has found illegally marketed semaglutide that may be counterfeit, contain incorrect or harmful ingredients, or have too little, too much, or even none of the active ingredient at all. The FDA has issued warnings to companies that have illegally sold drugs labeled \u201cfor research purposes\u201d or \u201cnot for human consumption.\u201d Some of these products have been sold directly to consumers for human use, even though they were specifically labeled not to be used in humans. The FDA warns these products can be harmful and should not be used.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Contamination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-warns-patients-and-health-care-professionals-not-use-compounded-drugs-fullerton-wellness\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was found to use nonsterile products, resulting in contamination of the medicine. Injecting a nonsterile medication could result in serious complications like infections and sepsis. Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.novomedlink.com\/content\/dam\/novomedlink\/semaglutide\/May-30-2024-Company-Statement.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novo Nordisk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has reported cases where impurities have been found in compounded semaglutide products\u2014with one product tested found to have more than 24% impurities.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>False claims and lack of prescription needed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some companies make false claims that their compounded semaglutide products are FDA approved or equivalent to FDA-approved medicines. Additionally, compounded semaglutide has been marketed without requiring a prescription from a healthcare provider. This can be dangerous, as compounded medicines, like all medicines, should only be used under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"bottom-line\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA strongly recommends using an FDA-approved semaglutide drug like Ozempic when it is available instead of compounded semaglutide. Compounded products are associated with significant risks and are not FDA approved. And now that the semaglutide shortage is over, you may need to switch to FDA-approved versions anyway. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are considering using compounded semaglutide, consult with a licensed healthcare provider. They can guide you on the safest course of action, which often includes using FDA-approved treatments. Ask them <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if they have a trusted, preferred pharmacy they work with on a regular basis. The FDA has a resource you can use to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/quick-tips-buying-medicines-over-internet\/besaferx-your-source-online-pharmacy-information\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identify safe online pharmacies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and report those that are unsafe.
