{"id":630770,"date":"2024-12-18T19:46:17","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T00:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=630770"},"modified":"2026-04-06T14:15:46","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T18:15:46","slug":"zyrtec-not-working","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/zyrtec-not-working\/","title":{"rendered":"If Zyrtec doesn\u2019t work what should I try?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cetirizine-hcl\/dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cetirizine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) medication and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antihistamines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/allergy-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of allergic rhinitis, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hay fever<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal allergies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sneezing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">runny nose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stuffy nose<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, swollen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nasal passages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">itchy eyes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">watery eyes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These conditions are similar to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonallergic rhinitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in that they cause the same symptoms, but they are different in that the latter isn\u2019t caused by contact with an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Rather, it\u2019s caused by other factors, such as a virus or irritants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (and other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy medicines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may not be able to fully treat those symptoms for several reasons; other treatment options may be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"why-is-zyrtec-not-working\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not working?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, it may help to explain how the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> responds to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Basically, when it recognizes an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it releases <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the chemical that causes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy medicines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-medicine-not-working\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may not effectively treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for various reasons: It\u2019s peak <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy season<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a person\u2019s allergies are changing, their symptoms are actually a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effect<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or they have a medication tolerance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> matters, too. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have been shown to be the most effective if taken at least one to two hours before exposure to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Dr. Luke Hentrich, Pharm.D., BCPS, an assistant professor with the department of clinical pharmacy and translational science at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He says symptoms may begin as late as three to five hours after exposure and peak as late as 12 to 24 hours after. This could also make a person believe their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isn\u2019t working, which explains why it\u2019s helpful to take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> preemptively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People may also want to take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at night since it can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drowsiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not always <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-related (back to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nonallergic rhinitis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u201cExposure to pollution, smoke, cleaning, or fragrance chemicals, for example, can cause similar symptoms to allergies, but the release of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not involved,\u201d says Dr. Aaron Emmel, Pharm.D., BCPS, a pharmacist and founder at Pharmacy Tech Scholar. \u201cIn these cases, taking an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will not be effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Dr. Brian Greenberg, MD, an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergist<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, immunologist, and formulator for 1MD Nutrition, allergic reactions are inflammatory. While <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can block <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">histamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he says\u2014aka reduce itching, swelling, and redness\u2014their benefits end there. \u201cThey do nothing for the inflammation, and that also produces many of the symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also become less helpful over time. \u201cIf used daily for more than six months, they lose their effectiveness,\u201d Dr. Greenberg adds. (More on this ahead.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last but not least, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can\u2019t work as effectively if the person taking them is still surrounded by what they&#8217;re allergic to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cReducing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exposure may increase the effectiveness of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Hentrich says. \u201cOne key nonpharmacologic recommendation in treating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is to identify and limit exposure to common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through activities like closing windows during pollen season, cleaning, dusting, doing laundry as frequently as needed, and preventing pets from being on couches and beds.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy testing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help a person determine what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they&#8217;re allergic to, which allows the patient to figure out avoidance strategies. An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allergy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be more serious; it can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, swelling, chest tightness, and trouble breathing, which can be life-threatening and require emergency medical help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include high <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pollen counts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dust mites<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet dander<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, stress, and changes to the environment. The presence of these can prevent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from effectively treating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because, well, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is still there, bothering the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Being mindful of whether these are present\u2014and if and how a person can avoid them\u2014is key.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of those <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not like the others, though: stress. How can it make allergies worse?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a couple of explanations. For one, experiencing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be bothersome, which can exacerbate the situation (or at least make it feel that way). On the physical side, the stress hormone cortisol can increase the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune system<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s response to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergens<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stressing less\u2014especially in the presence of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy symptoms<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014is easier said than done, however. Implementing stress reduction techniques (in addition to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is within a person&#8217;s control. He says anti-inflammatory medications take longer to work but do work well, while <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tolerance can be built.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Emmel recommends following up with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and investigating differential diagnoses. Testing may be needed to determine what\u2019s driving the symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis may identify an opportunity to avoid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> exposure and manage symptoms without pharmacologic treatment,\u201d he says. (AKA, washing bedding, HEPA filters, limiting time outdoors, etc.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf symptoms persist despite this, patients may benefit from switching <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or adding therapies such as intranasal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corticosteroids<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, leukotriene modifiers, and\/or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immunotherapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d Dr. Emmel adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the best <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy relief<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> includes changing to another <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy med<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, several are available: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl (diphenhydramine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra (fexofenadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin (loratadine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Other treatment options include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye drops<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decongestants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">steroid nasal sprays<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, different kinds of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nasal sprays<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy shots<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But again, the best bet involves a consultation with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for individualized treatment options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"do-people-develop-resistance-to-allergy-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do people develop resistance to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergy medications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can taking too much medicine be a problem, causing the development of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> resistance?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Emmel wouldn\u2019t call it \u201cresistance,\u201d per se, but more of a \u201ctolerance\u201d that can arise over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis doesn\u2019t happen in all patients, and time to tolerance varies,\u201d he adds. \u201cIf tolerance does occur, patients can try switching <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or moving to a non-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antihistamine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based treatment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hentrich agrees that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people can become tolerant to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which the medicine isn\u2019t as effective. He says it \u201ccan occur days to weeks after taking the medication each day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If that happens, he recommends talking to a healthcare professional about alternative medications and identifying factors that contribute to symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-increase-your-zyrtec-dosage\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you increase your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popping another <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when one isn\u2019t cutting it can be tempting. However, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-you-take-zyrtec-twice-a-day\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> twice a day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or generally upping the dosage can lead to serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples include increased sedation or sleepiness, dry mouth, urinary retention, muscle weakness, dry eyes, excessive thirst, an overdose, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, increasing your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dosage is more serious than it may seem.
